From the Pastor (con’t)

Chamberlayne Heights UMC will be my fourth full-me appointment in the Virginia

Conference over the course of ten years. With these ten years, and roughly ten more

years as a pastor in Massachuse=s, Georgia, and Pennsylvania many years ago, I bring

about twenty years of pastoral ministry experience. I entered the Order of Elders and

full connecon with the Virginia Annual Conference in June, 2007. In recent years I

have served as Chair of the Virginia Conference Leadership Development Instute, and

Chair of the Board of Higher Educaon and Campus Ministry, and sll help out now

and then with various projects usually related to data or organizaonal change.

I also bring about twenty years of experience in the academic and government sectors

as an instructor, administrator, researcher, and consultant. Before entering full me

ministry with the UMC, I was on the faculty at Old Dominion University in Norfolk for

about six years as the Director of The Social Science Research Center, where we

evaluated program effecveness for various community-based organizaons, schools,

and state and local government agencies. I love to teach, and I currently serve on the

faculty of Virginia Union University in Richmond in their Department of Social Work.

Other than telling goofy stories to make my girls laugh, or working in the garden with

Linda, my favorite pasmes are to read and write, especially about applied theology. I

think God has called me to lead local congregaons in our pursuit of effecve, applied

Chrisan theology. I believe the only “good” biblical theology is one that is openly

demonstrated in the life of a local church.

I look forward to serving with you as your pastor and teacher. I am thrilled about what

I have already learned about your ministry acvity. You are doing God’s work in the

community! God has richly blessed you, and I pray God will connue to richly bless all

of us in the coming months and years.

Grace to you, and peace,

Jeff

UMW GATHERING On Wednesday, July 16, the United Methodist Women will meet in the Fellowship Hall

to make pillow case dresses for children in Haiti. We will meet at 10 o’clock—stop for lunch and then work for a couple of hours in the afternoon. Juanita Hutto and

Martha Bragg will guide us. All of us will not be sewing. Some of us will be cutting, pinning and helping in other ways.

A number of you have said you have portable sewing machines. If you can, please

bring them to help with this important project. This is a wonderful way for us to get together to fellowship with one another during the summer months and in the process

know that we are continuing to do God’s work.

Please bring lunch. Drinks and dessert will be provided.

Grace upon grace,

Martha Sherrod

Lake Junaluska youth events work with Stop Hunger Now

LAKE JUNALUSKA, N.C. (UMNS) – Lake Junaluska summer

youth events’ adopted theme, “One Bread, One Body,” has

led to a partnership with Stop Hunger Now, an internaonal

hunger relief agency acve for more than 15 years. The

theme is based on Romans 12:5 and means being the body of

Christ in the world through service, worship and community,

which includes feeding the hungry.

History of Hymns: ‘The Head that Once Was Crowned with

Thorns’ DALLAS (UMNS) — The Ascension of Christ 40 days

a2er Easter is a longstanding observance of the church. This

hymn fills in the gaps of the scriptural account by describing

Christ's presence in heaven and the glory of those who

"dwell above" (stanza three) with him in "heaven's eternal

light" (stanza two). C. Michael Hawn of Southern Methodist

University’s Perkins School of Theology shares the story of

this hymn and its author in a column for the United

Methodist Board of Discipleship.

Church reaches out a2er Nebraska tornadoes

PILGER, Neb. (UMNS) — The Great Plains Annual (regional)

Conference is asking for United Methodists' prayers following

twin tornadoes that devastated much of Stanton County in

northeast Nebraska on Monday, June 16. At least two

people, including a 5-year-old girl, died in the storm.

Linda Stewart, Great Plains United Methodist Conference

disaster response coordinator, is working with other groups

in Voluntary Organizaons Acve in Disaster to help meet

the needs of those affected by the deadly twisters.

Greg Forrester, who leads U.S. disaster response for the

United Methodist Commi=ee on Relief, is in contact with the

conference.
