14th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B)

Getting Out of the BoxFe Marina S. SiaconAfter Jesus had finishedteaching in parables in different places He returned to his own people

in Nazareth. He began teaching in the synagogue as He did in other places. The townspeople were fascinated at first. But later they asked one another, Is he not the son of Mary, and brother of Santiago, Jose, Judas and Simon? He is one of us. So they started questioning the source of His wisdom and were scandalized by His powers. And Jesus said to them, A prophet is despised only in his own country, among his own relations and in his own house.

He worked no miracle there, except that he cured a few sick people by laying his hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.

At this point, we could see how His own townspeople treated Jesus. They have no faith in Him because He was only a carpenters son. Sadly this is what we are also doing. Often times we presume someones capability based on what he is

or what we see putting him in the box or judging him. Not only this, we too, almost all of the time put ourselves in the box, robbing ourselves with a chance of carrying out something good or of growing mature. We fail to allow God to work in us.

Like me, I was robbed many times of a chance to try harder when I was young. I just hold on to kon ano lang da, because of the words of my uncle who refused to have me adopted by his elder brother and mother for the reason that kon magdaku na sia, mamana man lang na kag indi makadumdum sa inyo. I recalled these words with some sadness and regret having been born in this world only to be left early by my parents. Anyway, I just tried to do something better out of the situation and thanks to my grandma and other uncles who gave me the opportunity to live with them. I was glad to say that I broke that curse and have already resolved this issue in my life. Now I am enjoying Gods gifts. I am blessed!

Jesus experience with His townspeople gives us a lesson in life too. We must not predetermine other people or belittle them for being just what they are. This Gospel is an eye opener and also heart opener for us. We must always avail ourselves to God and let Him work through us. Let us get out of that box, to receive more love, more happiness, more creativity and positive attitude, let us be affirming and appreciative of Gods abundance.

In most cases its because of fear that we are afraid of going out of our shell. Call your fear out. Open yourself up to accept others with love and the glorious gifts of Gods creation. It is time to appreciate people who know how to appreciate others too, people who are also open in acknowledging their own weaknesses. Young and old, male or female, each one of us is Gods creation according to His Own image and likeness. Load yourself with love and share it with others, especially with the needy. Youll feel fuller, happier and more deeply satisfied with your life than ever before!

Nag-abot ako diri sang Enero 16, 2011, Domingo nga adlaw.

We Catechists of the Parish of Our Lady of Candles ensure that one of the activities we have every year encourages fellowship. Our objective is community building. Through this we hope to promote the spirit of oneness and friendship. In fellowship, we nourish our body and soul, this gives us strength, hope and joy to serve God.

On June 14, 2015, our sixty-six Catechists (School and Barangay Volunteer Catechists and others, BAC Coordinators) who served during Flores de Mayo went out for a fellowship at Ma. Paz Resort in Alimodian. At 7:00 in the morning, a Ceres Bus Liner arrived near Jaro Cathedral and departed at 7:45 a.m. On our way we prayed the Holy Rosary for our safe trip. We arrived at Ma. Paz Resort at 8:30 a.m. We ate our lunch at 12:00 p.m. when the priest director, Fr. Joenick S. Territorio arrived. He brought with him food like bacareta and pasta with seafoods mixed.

Besides this food prepared by the Parish, every one shared their own baon. Before lunch, he expressed gratitude to the catechists for their service to the Church especially in educating the children in the faith. The moment of togetherness is manifested by our laughter and joy of being one - in singing, swimming and participating in games.

This outing is a good therapy for everyone. Relaxation is made more wholesome, which bring us closer to one another. It strengthens our relationship. Winners of the games, singing contest The Voice of the Cathedral received prizes. We went home happy and fulfilled. We passed by Alimodian Church for picture-taking. We thank God for all the blessings we have received since we began our activities in Flores de Mayo. Full support of Cathedral priests inspires us in serving God.

gid sila maghangop kag magpatawad. Subong man, tuman kaayo sang mga

parokyano. I will surely miss the parishioners especially the young people who have a special place in my heart!

Kondi ini nangin akon puloy-an HOME - bangud sang maayo namon nga pagtamdanay sa isa kag isa.

Gani, matuod nga masaylo na ako sa Parokya ni San Santiago, Apostol, sa Maasin, sa Hulyo 8, pero magalakat ako nga may mamag-an kag mapinasalamaton nga taguipusoon. Matuod nga may kasubo pero

yara man ang kalipay sa akon taguipusoon bangud kay nagapati ako, nga bisan diin man kita makadto, padayon kita nga nagaserbisyo kag nagahigugma sa Dios.

Lord, as I embrace Your new will for me, I thank You for Your faithful accompaniment. You are always there to love and guide me. Though I may be unfaithful to You but never a second that You have abandoned me. Thus Lord, I am sorry for all my sins.

Thank you for allowing me to serve here in the Parish and National Shrine of Our Lady of Candles. I have grown a lot here through my administrative and pastoral work. Thank you for giving me the strength not to abhor my responsibilities because it is by doing that I also learn and grow.

As I continue to journey, I treasure in my heart Your great love which You have shown to me through Our Lady of Candles and the parishioners. May You unceasingly bless them with spiritual and material gifts. May Your love, ever real and tangible, always move me to rise above my human weaknesses and learn to love and serve You and Your people. May I always witness to the meaning of my name, Nathaniel, that is, to be a gift for other people so that they may glorify Your name now and forever. Amen.

By judging others we blind ourselves to our own evil and to the grace which others are just as entitled to as we are.

One of the privileges given to me by Fr. Nath is to introduce to you via the Candle Light the new priests who will be assigned in our Parish and the first opportunity was to interview one of them in the person of Rev. Fr. Martin Baltazar Alarcon who hails from Balasan, Iloilo.

It was around four in the afternoon at the office of San Jose de Obrero Church in Fundidor, Molo where Fr. Martin works as the assistant parish priest that my first encounter with the young minister of God took place.

There is a popular saying that first impression lasts and Fr. Martin in that interview exuded traits of the mans character who is friendly, unassuming, and seemingly with lots of good public relation skills up in his sleeves.

A young priest who manifests simplicity, friendliness, honesty and a humble heart, let us all welcome to our parish, Rev. Fr. Martin Baltazar Alarcon.

A Priest for JesusMy conversation with our other new

assistant parish priest in the person of Rev. Fr. Mark Lester Bernasol Senina was not made in a very formal and regular manner, since he had a very busy schedule as assistant parish priest in connection with their fiesta celebration at St. Thomas Villanova Parish in Miag-ao, Iloilo and we were not afforded the luxury of time, even then, Fr. Mark turned out to be a very articulate man of God and in the context of an ideal interview, the young servant of our Lord is a good copy.

The first time I called him up on his mobile phone, I was surprised to hear a ringtone music with lyrics like Its not hard for me to love you Oh I really love you and just the way you are. I told myself, this priest must not be very difficult to talk with basing my feeling to his kind of music which happened to be like mine. Anyway, I did not mention this in our short talk which probably only lasted for about fifteen to twenty minutes taking into account that it was a Monday, his rest day, and at around 1 pm when it was about his siesta period and just a day after his very busy weekend.

And so, as I started our interview on the phone, I told him I would make it as short as possible and still hoping that I could also make this write up about Fr. Mark possibly short but interesting and loaded with important information about him, so at least you will have a little idea when he will be around working in our parish.

Why did you want to be a priest? To serve God and His people.

Who inspired or motivated you? Fr. Francisco Echevaria of Sta. Maria

School, now Ateneo de Iloilo and the Jesuit priest for 12 years from grade school to High School. Were there times in your Seminary days that you were distracted?

I was focused and determined to achieve my vocation. What would be the program/s in the parish you really like to work on?

Youth ministry, Faith renewal, liturgical music, among others. What do you think of Pope Francis?

I greatly admire our Holy Father. He is unique, down-to-earth, grass roots oriented who started from the bottom going to where he is now and his contribution to the Church and to the world is highly appreciated by many.

Who is your favorite saint/s? St. Michael the Archangel who I feel is

always around present each time I say a prayer; Blessed Alvaro del Portillo, soon to be a saint; and St. Augustine de Loyola, SJ, founder of the Jesuit order.

I could have lasted an hour more or two in our interview especially if it would have been done in a normal personal setting, but then because of the limited time, I finally asked Fr. Mark his legacy or on how he would like the Jareos to remember him when his assignment here is over ,and his answer :

I want to be remembered as a smiling and accommodating priest who can can be of service to anyone at any time. But more than anything else, I would like them to see Jesus in me, not me as Fr. Mark in person, but it should all be about Jesus through me. I am a PRIEST FOR JESUS, Fr. Mark Senina concluded.

After our phone conversation, I received a raw information that one time a few years back, the good father served here at Jaro Archdiocesan Social Action Center (JASAC) and in all probability, Fr. Mark would not be a total stranger to this parish. So, we can probably say that his second coming would be more beneficial to all of us especially the poor, the down-trodden and those who are forgotten by our society. May he be guided by the Holy Spirit in all his duties and responsibilities through our Lord Jesus and the intercession of our Lady of Candles.

    Fe Marina S. Siacon

Indi bala nga kita daw amo man sina?

Batunon naton sia sing may daku nga pagtahod. All the ways in which we do not give God or our neighbor what is due them really say a lot about ourselveswe can be so full of ourselves that we forget or overlook what we owe to others.

Tinguhaan naton nga mangin maayo kag matinahuron sa aton isigkatawo nga ginahigugma sang Dios kasubong sang Iya paghigugma sa aton. Hatagan naton sia bisan man lang diutay sang aton tinion.

So Long, But not GoodbyePureza D. Lacuesta

Words from the GospelJohannah Ysabel F. Balagosa

It seems only yesterday that I started working with Fr. Nat Gentizon as a staff member of the Candle Light publication. He appointed me one of the associate editors.

Since I am in my waning years, I am aware that Candle Light will be my last apostolate. With the transfer of Fr. Nat to Maasin, I shall try my best to keep up with my assignment.

July is the feast of the Precious Blood of Jesus. His sacrifice on the Cross, preceded by His trip to Calvary drew much blood from His Head which came from the seventy-two thorns which the Jews crowned Him. More blood issued from His Body when the soldiers whipped Him seventy-seven times with steel rods having six pointed spikes at the end. Thus, He received four hundred sixty wounds on His Body which shed much blood as He took His trip to Calvary.

Although July is a busy month for us since our schools opened in June, we must give time to ponder on Jesus sacrifice and let His precious Blood be an inspiration for us to increase our spirituality.

This world is filled with sacrifices which can be our source of salvation if we know how to use them. Some of us complain of the rising cost of prices which can hardly be borne by those who have less in life. Others complain of broken family relationships which are difficult to mend. As the world

grows older moral and spiritual changes come in every form to many families. There was a time when parents and elders were effective in strengthening family relationships in exercising discipline and all kinds of positive control over the younger members. Today, its different. Even the manner of dressing has affected most females who use mens apparel even in Church and in formal gatherings. I dont know if the word modesty has been removed from the dictionary.

Let us therefore say so long to Fr. Nat when he transfers to the parish of Maasin, but not goodbye to his teachings when he interpreted the Gospel during his sermon in the Mass we attended under him. Let us not forget his writings in the Candle Light publication which are beautiful, practical, and full of concern.

Our priests are heavily loaded. There are Masses very early in the morning, at noon time, in the afternoon, and even in the evenings. They have chosen a vocation which is mentally and physically heavy. They have baptisms, confessions, and weddings to perform. It is a vocation of sacrifice and endurance. We have to support them in their efforts and pray for their physical, mental, and spiritual health.

My dear brothers and sisters, let us not think of ourselves alone. Let us say goodbye to selfishness and pride, and give

time to others who are working for general improvement and the common good. Let us welcome into the circle of our activity our brothers and sisters who are unselfish in mind, hand, and heart and look up to Jesus, Whose precious Blood continues to pour down on the good and the indifferent.

So long Fr. Nat, but not goodbye!
