To Know and Be KnownF R O M T H E D E S K O F R A B B I LY D IA M E D W I N :

In John Ortberg, Jr.’s book, Everybody’s Normal Til You Get To Know Them, he writes, “One can only be loved to the extent that they are known.” A powerful statement of truth, and yet how often do we wander through our world, and in how many places, and feel unnoticed or unknown? How many rooms do we enter and no

one turns around? How many times have we spoken when no one answered? In how many instances have we acted and our actions were deemed unimportant?

Even in our highly advanced society, we have missed a very important piece of the puzzle – the deep satisfac-tion and joy and sense of belonging we get from being known by others (and by others, I mean those people outside of our families and co-workers). Our species evolved in tribal societies, and our brains, scientists tell us, crave the security and love and variety that those 40-50 people provide. After our physiological needs and the need for safety are met, Maslow’s pyramid says that we literally need that sense of love and belonging to survive; we gain confidence through the respect of oth-ers and respect for others; we cannot become actualized human beings without our extended community.

There are two types of revelation in Jewish thought: the Mt. Sinai variety, filled with thunder and lightning that we celebrated last month during Shavuot, and Elijah’s still, small voice, the voice from within that is revealed only when quiet combined with time allows truth to bubble up in our consciousness. If love comes through being known, it’s this sec-ond kind of revelation that we need more of in order to create a healthier individual and a healthier community. It’s the kind that takes intentional conversation and time spent together, such that knowing and being known emerge as the result of revealing more about ourselves, whether it is during prayer or while pursuing justice or through joining a Temple Connect group. I won’t sugar coat it; it is an investment of time and an over-coming of inertia. But just like going to the gym, the results out-weigh the effort and the little endorphin high feels great, too. You’ll experience life more deeply and more sweetly, if you’ll join us on this journey.

The Temple can be a hospital for the spirit. It can be a retreat for the soul. It can be a mirror for the self. It can be a yardstick for life’s journey. The Temple is attended to by the rabbis and executive director and staff, but in order to be transformative in these ways, The Temple needs you. We need you to be known to us, because we all need each other and the gifts we can offer one another. So this is an open invitation—if you have not yet attended an Age and Stage opportunity or you have not yet joined a Temple Connect group, if you feel unknown and you want to be known, please reach out to me. Even if you have not stepped foot in The Temple since your Bar/Bat Mitzvah, now is the time to come home again. It would be an honor to know you and help you find the perfect next Temple step for you to be inspired and help to transform our world.

Engage @ The Temple

This summer (through August 12) our Friday evening sermons will share the theme of “Voices

and Visions” from the PJ Library series that combines quotes from major Jewish thinkers

and leaders with artwork. The clergy have selected several ancient and modern Jewish ideas which we can, through the weekly sermons and

corresponding poster displays, consider how they remain relevant and inspiring for us today.

JULY 1“There is nothing more whole than a broken heart.”

(Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Kotsk)

JULY 8“I found a fruitful world, because my

ancestors planted it for me. Likewise, I am planting for my children.” (Talmud)

JULY 15“The heroic hours of life do not announce their

presence by drum and trumpet.” (Benjamin Cardozo)

JULY 22“A miracle cannot prove what is impossible; it only

confirms what is possible.” (Maimonides)

JULY 29 – NO SERVICES AT THE TEMPLE

Please join the community for our annual Reform Movement Shabbat, this year at Temple

Beth Tikvah in Roswell.

AUGUST 5“Most of the things worth doing in the world

were declared impossible before they were done.” (Louis Brandeis)

AUGUST 12“Silence remains inescapably, a form of speech.”

(Susan Sontag)

MACoMKnow anyone getting married? Want to celebrate a special occasion- a number of years being cancer free, a milestone birthday, a birth of a child? Mikvah might be an option for you.

In recent years Mikvah has been used for creative expressions that acknowledge personal milestones and journeys. MACoM (Metro Atlanta Community Mikvah) takes a unique view of the time held traditions we observe year after year. Our inter-denominational Mikvah is a one of kind facility in Georgia; all are welcome.

Since our doors opened in November, we’ve had more than 120 immersion guests. Located at 700 A Mount Vernon Road in Atlanta, the look and feel are modern and inviting. Immersion guests, clergy, volunteers, donors and staff: each bring something unique to this holy place. MACOM meets the highest aesthetic and ritual standards, and is located in a central setting for Atlanta Jews from across the spectrum of observance seeking spirituality and education.

“We honor tradition, but invite innovation,” states Executive Director Barbara LeNoble. “Please visit our newly constructed Mikvah facility and organization dedicated to providing a safe, welcoming and inclusive space for all members of the Jewish Community to find spiritual meaning, healing and renewal.”

If you’re interested in learning more about our community outreach and edu-cation programs, or just want to schedule a tour for yourself, students, or other interested groups please contact me: [email protected].

Temple in the Neighborhood – EvolvingTemple in the Neighborhood is evolving as we’ve learned about Engagement at The Temple. Instead of episodic neighborhood gatherings, neighborhoods will have the chance to join a new Temple Connect Chai group. Chai groups will be based on where you live, a chance to gather regularly with your neighbors who are in your same age and stage in life to get to know each other better. You’ll get to meet up with these friends or neighbors once a month without battling too much traffic, bring the teachings of your favorite rabbis into your living room via the website or DVD player, and use the discussion guide provided by The Temple to inspire your life.

In the months to come, as you consider which group to join, please con-sider grabbing two friends or simply decide you want to meet some neighbors, and contact Rabbi Lydia Medwin ([email protected]) or Temple Chai Groups Chairperson Matthew Kahl ([email protected]) to get your Chai group started this fall.

Find Your Tribe EventBIG THINGS HAPPEN IN SMALL GROUPSSunday, September 18 • 5:00 – 7:00 PMBig things really do happen in small groups. After all, we were created to experience life in community with others. That’s why, at The Temple, we encourage you to get into a Temple Connect small group so that you can find your tribe. A Temple Connect group is a group of three or more people who gather each month in a home, workplace, or at The Temple. In a Temple Connect group you’ll meet new people and spend time with old friends. You can do the activities you love or learn from our rabbis from the comfort of home. You can discuss the things that inspire you and transform your life. The best way to experience a small group is to start one of your own. It’s simple! Just grab two friends, find a place to meet, and you’re good to go! Or join us at the Find Your Tribe event to see all of the Temple Connect groups starting this fall and find your own!

Babysitting available upon request. Join us for music, hor d’oeurves, and other refreshments. Please RSVP by September 12th to Joya Schmidt at [email protected] or call 404-873-1731 to get started in finding your tribe.

Caring at The TempleOur Caring at The Temple program reaches out to fellow congregants during times of hardship or pastoral need, pro-viding homemade chicken soup and challah to members who are bereaved, ill, recently discharged from the hospital, or are celebrating the arrival of a new child. We have deliv-ered more than 500 soups, and nearly every step of the pro-gram – from soup preparation, to delivery (within your zip code), to letting us know about fellow congregants in need – is led by members of our congregation.

Thank you to our Caring at The Temple volunteers who delivered soup this month: Robbie Levin, Hank Kimmel and Debbie Shelton

To be a part of this program and to fulfill the mitzvah of bikkur cholim (visiting the sick) or to let us know who needs soup, please contact Rabbi Lydia Mediwn at [email protected] or 404-873-1731.

Tikkun Olam & Social Justice OpportunitiesHELP FRED A. Mark your calendars and join Rabbi Spinrad on Tuesday, September 13 at 8:30AM for a special informational Open House led by FATE principal Ashley Adamo. Meet students, teachers, and administration and discover for yourself what makes this Atlanta Public School a special place to learn. Opportunities to help at FATE include mentoring and tutoring students, periodically aiding with preparing bulletin boards and other one-time needs, donating school-based learning materials and new or gently-used children’s clothes to FATE’s clothing closet, and much more. Located in Kirkwood, the address of Fred A. Toomer Elementary School is 65 Rogers Street, NE, Atlanta, GA 30317. To volunteer, contact Tishy Vincent, APS Community in Schools Liaison: [email protected]. To RSVP for the Open House or for questions, email Rabbi Spinrad: [email protected].

READING RACE: STANDING AS WITNESS AND ALLY The Temple’s recent “Hearts and Minds” conversations on racism and race revealed a considerable number of people in our congregation who care deeply about racial injustice and who want to work together as Jews to create a more just society. These conversations also demonstrated that, while our intentions are good, to become capable witnesses and competent allies first necessitates further internal learning and reflection. For these reasons, our next logical steps are small group discussions of the following titles on the dates below:

• Monday, August 29, 6-8pm, Between the World and Me by Ta-Nahisi Coates

• Monday, September 26, 6-8pm, America’s Original Sin by Jim Wallis• Monday, October 24, 6-8pm, The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander

Before each discussion, participants will be required to purchase and to have read the book in advance. In good faith, we ask each participant to commit to attending all four sessions of the series. Small group discussions will be led by trained lay facilitators and each evening will open and close with your clergy in the Covenant Chapel.

For more information or questions, please email Rabbi David Spinrad: [email protected]. To participate in this series, RSVP with Joya Schmidt: [email protected].

During our Shabbat On the Road Comes Home service on June 3, we were blessed by those leading our Engage-

ment work who ‘testified’ before a packed house about their experiences this past year. If you missed it, we wanted to let you hear their stories, too, and be inspired to join a Temple Con-nect group or Age and Stage opportunity this fall! Please email Rabbi Lydia Medwin, Director of Engagement ([email protected]) or Summer Jacobs, Engagement Associate ([email protected]) with any questions or ideas for future groups and events!

Boy, we could tell you some stories: Stories of being in the forefront of the civil rights movement 50 years ago to advocating for LGBTQ rights today; stories about members whose families have been here for five generations and stories of the 500+ preschool and religious school families who have chosen to make this their home; stories about cutting edge thinking and a dynamic senior rabbi who was ranked in the top 50 rabbis in our nation; stories about what we imagine our community to be in the next 150 years. But what we care most about is your story: who you are, what’s most important to you, how we can help you make this YOUR home. If you are interested in a deep sense of community, a way to engage in meaningful, relevant Jewish learning, a team with which you can change the world, a quiet sanctuary from the daily grind, or just a place to call your Jewish home, we are here for you.

non-judgmental—a plus for learning Mah Jong. Now when I go to Shabbat services there is always someone I know. Playing Mah Jong at the Temple has allowed me to think of our Temple not only as a house of worship, but also a spe-cial place to meet friends or read in the garden. If I want to know about a new restaurant, doctor or travels to a new city, my Mah Jong friends have suggestions. We talk and love hearing about our children and grandchildren. We pro-vided dinner one night at the shelter and plan to work on other projects together. We celebrated our 6 months anni-versary of playing Mah Jong with a luncheon at my house. We didn’t play that day because we decided we wanted to chat, and enjoy our new found friendships. Mah Jong is a fun learning experience but we all agree that the new con-nections we have made are the best!” (Our Mah Jong group is led by Elaine Clear. This piece is written by Elaine Clear and Adrienne Boyer.)
