Summer Greetings!

By the time you are all reading this, the weather is hopefully feeling a lot more seasonally appropriate in comparison to what we had in June. Summer is an extremely busy time of year for 4-H. There is the Explore Wisconsin trip, Citizenship Washington Focus, American Spirit, Wisconsin 4-H & Youth Conference, Camp, and of course the County Fair! Plus working on projects and record books and starting to plan for next year. Can you believe that we are wrapping up the 4-H year at the end of August?!?! WOW! I am sure that you have probably learned a thing or two this year, I know I did! Your record books are the perfect place for you to showcase your learning. If you have questions about your record book or need some assistance, your club leader is a great place to start or you can contact the Extension office. Good luck with all of your summer activities and end of year wrap up!

I really don’t want to rush things, but I am excited for the new 4-H year to start. There are a lot of things that I am looking forward to, such as more training and educational opportunities for our amazing volunteers, strengthening some of our clubs, and even adding new ones! I cannot wait to get started! There is a new deadline for the charters this year, so please take note of the calendar for a bunch of important dates. Remember if you need any assistance or have any questions in your role as a member or volunteer, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me, that is what I am here for! Also, don’t be afraid to stop me and say hi when you see me around. I am still working on getting to know everyone.

Have a wonderful Summer!

A Word from the BoardBeing a true leader, why do we become a leader and why do we stick with it? This is the question I asked one of our long standing club leaders and youth mentors, Rose Rynish.

“This is my 29th year as a leader, 26 years as a main leader. I was in Outagamie County 4-H for 11 years as a member. My mom was an assistant main leader. I met my husband, Pat, in Junior Leaders (we now call this Youth Leaders) so 4-H was a big part of our childhood, mine more than Pat’s. I wanted my kids to experience what I did in 4-H. So when my kids were old enough I enrolled them in 4-H.

I became a leader to help guide, teach and be a role model for youth to look up to. I wanted [the youth] to feel comfortable to reach out to another adult, if needed. Honestly, I saw a great need for adult volunteers to make a difference in kids’ lives. What a great organization to give of my time to make a difference. I felt I had the talent and drive to do that. When I look at my life it evolves around 4-H. My husband says 4-H is my “hobby.” I believe God gave me the talent to help our youth in any way possible to be good citizens of our world. The 4-H program relies very heavily on volunteers. Take out the volunteers and 4-H would not survive. As adults we need to set [a good] example to make an impact on our youth. I [will] continue on, as I love the kids and I hope I am making a difference in their lives. If we don’t do it, who will?”

Rose is just one example of our leaders that have taken time to guide our youth, help develop their practical and leadership skills, all while teaching them life skills. Skills they will need later in life to be a successful adult. You may not be able to dedicate a significant amount of time needed to manage a club, but any time you give will help develop our youth and that can be done by being a project leader. These kids are our future and they need any support we can give them. Thank you to everyone that helps mentor and develop our youth!

Volunteer LeadersGetting to Know You SurveyThank you to those volunteers who have already participated in the “Getting to Know You” Survey. We would really appreciate it if you could take five minutes to fill out the survey (that can be reached by following this link http://bit.ly/4HVolunteerSurvey.) If you are unable to access the link please contact the office and we can send you a paper copy or go through the survey with you.

The results of the survey will be used to better serve our amazing volunteers. Thank you in advance for your time!

Volunteer Development Training & VIPWe aim to offer high quality programming for our youth and our volunteers. In order to do so we will be offering Volunteer in Preparation (VIP) training once a month and twice in October, January, and May.

We are also offering four different Volunteer Development Trainings throughout the year. We strongly encourage you to attend at least one of the trainings, no matter what capacity you volunteer in. We are currently working to get the details in place for these trainings which will be of no cost to you the volunteers. Further information will be sent out soon.

Our May meeting had a Dressage guest speaker, Azlan Babl. The youth participated in a hands-on activity to learn a little more on what Dressage is like. Azlan will also lead a clinic for us June 6.

Mark your calendars for our Fair Pleasure Show, July 20, 8:00 am sharp.

LivestockThe Outagamie County Livestock Committee held a sheep and goat educational fitting and showing clinic in June. See photos on right. Resource leaders were on hand to answer questions and help improve the skills needed for the youth to succeed. Educational tips were discussed on writing letters and thank you’s for the market sale. These tips will help the youth when they reach out to our communities for their support of our fair and sale.

Resource LeadersCalling all volunteers who enjoy learning and sharing! Outagamie County 4-H has a goal of having a resource leader available in as many project areas as possible. We would like you to have a strong interest or passion for the project area, a willingness to continue learning and an excitement for educating our youth. Please contact Vicki in the office 832-5123, for more details or if you are interested in being considered for a resource leader position.

A complete list of all projects can be found in the Family Handbook, please note and consider projects that did not have a resource leader last year.

Consider nominating them for the Friend of 4-H Award! This can be someone who extensively helped you with a 4-H project or maybe someone that you see helping with a lot of 4-H projects and activities. These are the type of people we want to recognize for their continued devotion to 4-H Youth Development Programs.
