Dear Nobles, Well it’s July already and we have a full agenda for themonth. Remember our Stated Meeting will be on Tuesday,July 10th, I hope you can make it! Parade season is here! On July 3rd there is the West DesMoines Parade; July 4th there are three parades to hit thatday: Bussey, Exira and Urbandale. Other events include: The Good Guys Car Show Golf CartOperation June 30 – July 1st at the Iowa State Fairgroundsand the Hillbilly Kruise on Saturday, July 8th. The Elected Divan Representatives will be in DaytonaBeach for full days of work at the Imperial Session July 15-19th, then back to Iowa in time to make the No. 1 ShrineBowl in the country on July 20th for the dinner and the gameon the July 21st. We finish the month with our famous Ladies AuxiliaryCorn Feed on July 27th. As we are going to parades we are constantly remindedby those who come out to see us of what Shriners do. Sev-eral times over the last few years the folks in the crowdhave said, “You know it really means a lot to us to see theShriners. They do so much for kids and the work the Shrinersdo is amazing!” I still remember one of my first parades and the kids onthe sidelines saying, “Here come the Shriners! My Daddy isa Mason, and some day he’s going to be a Shriner!” Whenwe parade, we are sending a huge message back to the pub-lic that their support is important to us! We also are help-ing to recruit new Masons and Shriners too. After all, giv-ing back is what we are about, isn’t it? We have some Potentate’s Picks again this year and weneed to show the public why Za-Ga-Zig is the No. 1 Templein Iowa! If you haven’t attended a parade lately, pleasemake the effort. Your public is missing you!

On Thursday, June 7th, 4 of us car pooled to Boone and metwith 4 other Nobelles for a fabulous meal at the Eastern StarMasonic Home. After some visiting and a short meeting, we then went to awonderful boutique named, Holly’s Dress Shop for some shop-ping. It was a beautiful day and a great time was had by all. Our next luncheon meeting will be Thursday, July 5th at12:30pm at the Chicago Speakeasy in Des Moines. We’re hop-ing all our members will be there for this luncheon.

As I am writing this we haveabout 50 bags of onions left outof 6000 bags. It was quite afeat of moving that many on-ions. It is all due to a teameffort that I am so appreciativeof. First to all the Nobles andLadies, year after year con-tinue to sell our onions. Somesay that our onions sell them-selves and in some small partthat is true. In reality it is theNobles, Ladies and friendsthat pound the pavement,maintain the relationshipsand keeps a steady core ofdedicated customers that con-tinue to buy Sweet VidaliaOnion. Whether you sold or boughtone bag or in the case of AdamsCounty Shrine Club 950 Bagsand Fort Dodge Shrine Clubwith 895 Bags you all playedan important part in the suc-cess of the 2018 Onion Sale.Each of you made this event asuccess. After we have a fullaccounting of costs and pro-ceeds I will be making thatannouncement at a futuremeeting. I want to publicly thankLady Diana Corbin and LadyCarolyn Shannon. Withoutout their patience and atten-tion to detail this project wouldnot have been a success. An-swering phones, tallying or-ders, verifying orders, re-veri-

fying orders and decipheringsome onions orders seemedlike a monumental task andthey handled the entire projectseamlessly. It was a pleasureand gave me great confidencethat this event would be suc-cessful with them on our team.I truly depended on them fortheir years’ experience anddedication. I want to extend my appre-ciation to Pat and Ziegler thattook care of most of the heavylifting by providing expert op-eration of the forklift to off loadthe semis. When I saw 6000bags sitting in the back of thesemis I wondered how wecould have done this withoutthem. Thank you never seemslike enough. A word of thanksgoes to Decker Trucking out ofFort Dodge for their generos-ity and making that part of theoperation run smoothing, evenwith a truck issue we had ouronions onsite when promised.Kelly Folsom of Folsom Farmswho continues to provide aquality product year after yearand is never afraid to take acall from us. I am so thankfulfor the relationships that havebeen built over the past yearsthat keep this event runningso successfully. I hope that Ihave honored those relation-ships so that Za-Ga-Zig contin-ues to succeed.

To the Nobles who shed morethan a few drops of perspira-tion those first two days of on-ion distribution, I can’t thankyou enough, you have my sin-cere appreciation. There wasone standout and I know thathe would not want me to men-tion his name however; youneed to know his name, NobleRick Krutsinger of the LucasCounty Shrine Club. This newNoble called and asked whenhe needed to be there to helpand boy did he help. If youwere there that first day, youwitnessed an incredible workethic and a tremendous atti-tude, all for our Fraternity andPhilanthropy. I hesitate tomention anyone for missingone person who so generouslygave of their time, energy andperspiration those two days; Iwill not forget your efforts. Finally, I want to thankChief Rabban Doug Miller andTreasurer and Past PotentateDanny Willson for their assis-tance and guidance throughthis event. Not only did Dougdo a lot of the heavy lifting, healso fed us and made sure thatwe were well hydrated. Withhis past experience, Doug alsohelped with providing insightto the operation. For Dannywhat can I say, he was thenumbers guy. Keeping the or-ders straight and taking careof the all the financial issues.This is a huge job. He was alsogracious enough to make him-self available for Nobles afterthe normal hours.

Another benefit about dealing with Scheel‘s? The first 2 yearsthey provided our guns for our raffle, they wrote a check back tothe shrine. This amounted to 10% of what we spend with them,putting our investment at only 5% above cost. Last yearScheel‘s gave us a financial contribution to start out 2018 andto help with our circus, even though we did not purchase fromthem last year. This alone speaks volumes about the commit-ment Scheel‘s has made to Za-Ga-Zig to partner with us for thisevent. “What about me? How do I benefit?” You stand to benefit byselling your tickets. We are making a slight change to the tick-ets this year. Every book of tickets will have a “SELLERSTICKET.” It will be the last ticket in the book and will be adifferent color. Once you sell the 5 tickets in the book, you willfill out the “SELLERS TICKET” and it will go into a specialdrawing for a gift certificate to Scheel`s. There will be 10 ofthese tickets and the amount will be based on ticket sales. Weare looking at certificate values of anywhere from $100 -$400.Also, the noble who sells the most tickets will get a gift certifi-cate for $400.00 to Scheel`s and you still have a chance at the10 “SELLERS TICKET” gift certificates. “Wait? You mentioned that my unit or club benefit from this?”Yes. Any unit or club that sells $1000.00 or more in tickets willreceive 5% commission back to their unit or club. Sell $2000.00or more and it jumps to 15%. We are really digging into ourbottom dollar to give you an incentive, so we need to push thesetickets. Remember, Scheel`s has something for everyone. We are adding more games of chance. We will be offering a52-card raffle. These are a 50/50 raffle at $20 per chance thatsplits $520.00 between the temple and the winner. We will run

these raffles numerous times throughout the event. Any do-nated items that we receive will be offered through raffles. Finally, we are considering looking outside the philanthropyto help us sell tickets. The independent business owners in smalltown Iowa. The barbers, service shops, retailers, restaurants,implement and seed dealers, etc. If anyone has such a person inmind, please contact me or the office. They would qualify as the“SELLER” for the “SELLER TICKET” drawings. This idea isstill in consideration and has not been finalized. Many neighboring temples make well over $125,000 at theseevents. Some close to $250,000. They have outgrown their raffleand have it off site. With a little effort, we can grow this. Weknow we will not hit those numbers right away, but we canstart the upward trend in 2018. At the very least, there is noreason that this event should not come close to (or surpass) theamount of money we raise at the circus, with a lot less man-power and effort, over the next few years. Iowa has thousands of outdoors enthusiasts. Go to any camp-ground, walking trail, golf course, lake or sporting complex andsee for yourself. Our event will offer something for EVERYONE.Did I already mention that?

It is hard to believe that weare half way through the yearalready. We have had greatsuccess in building our mem-bership and there are evenmore great things to come. Iwould like to say thank you toeveryone that has eitherbrought in at least one newmember or have gotten aformer member to get re-in-stated in the Shrine. I know that I had stated thisbefore……………but it cannotbe said too often, I would urge all of you to findat least one Master Mason andbring them into the Shrine.There are way too many Ma-sons that are not Shriners. Weneed to find them are get theminto our great fraternity andphilanthropy. We also need tothink of a former member ormembers that we know thatwere dropped for non-paymentof dues and let them knowabout the amnesty program. Inorder to get reinstated, all theyneed to do is fill out a petitionfor restoration and pay thisyear’s dues and they will beback in. Also, if you know any-one that demitted from theShrine be sure and contact himabout getting active again. We have one more opportu-nity coming up for everyone tohelp raise money for theShrine and help raise aware-ness of the Shrine. We willhave our golf cart shuttles op-erating on August 9th to 19th atthe Iowa State Fair. If you areable to drive a golf cart pleasecontact the Shrine office.Working even just one shiftwill help. Once you drive, youwill see how enjoyable it is andI am sure you will want todrive more. It takes every one of us toworking together, not againsteach other, to make greatthings happen. Clubs and Units Updateas to Charitable Giving

A recent question came upconcerning Clubs and Units,and this is a condensed versionthat was sent to our Recorder(John P. Miller P.P.), regard-ing these matters by John C.Piland Executive Vice Presi-dent/COO of Shriners Interna-tional. ( The entire letter canbe viewed in the RecordersOffice upon Request) “First as it relates to thepower and control of clubs andunits, the bylaws of ShrinersInternational are very clearthat units and clubs of theTemple are under the controlof the Potentate. See Sec 336.1and Sec.337.3 of the bylaws ofShriners International. Whilemost clubs generally operateautonomously within the scopeof authority provided to themby the temple Potentate, a clubor unit that is disbanding can-not simply choose to dispose ofclub or unit assets which areproperty of the Temple.If you can believe it, we had acircumstance in which weheard that a member of one ofour clubs suggested that theproceeds of a disbanding Clubsimply be divided among itsmembers. In other cases, wehave heard of clubs attempt-ing to provide the money to lo-cal charities unrelated to theShrine. Such an action may beconsidered an unauthorizedact as set forth in Sec.334.13(a)of the bylaws of Shriners In-ternational in that club andunit property is in fact theproperty of the temple andmembers of a disbanding club,which are, in fact, temple as-sets. The second question relatedto whether a temple, club orunit can consistent with thebylaws of Shriners Interna-

tional, provide money forcharitable purposes other thanShriners Hospitals for Chil-dren. The specific provisions whichis applicable to the questionfollows: “No Noble (in his ca-pacity as a Shriner), Club,Unit, organization of Nobles oraffiliated or appendant corpo-rations shall engage in anycharitable fundraising activityother than for Shriners Hospi-tals for Children.” GeneralOrder #, Series of 2017-2018,“Fundraising Activities”, “2.Fundraising for CharitablePurposes”, p.45 We should all be working forthe benefit of our Charity,Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren. If we are all pulling onthe same side of the wagon,this question would neverarise. “Shriners are brothers.We share a common creed andcommon goals and values. OurCreed Sec 210.2 includes apledge to one another to sup-port the SHC: “we believeShriners Hospitals for childrento be the world’s greatest phi-lanthropy, and we covenantwith each other to support its“temples of mercy” with spirit,time, talent, and means.”Therefore, when consideringthe goals, shared values andobligations as expressed in ourbylaws, it would be difficult forone to suggest that charitableefforts for entities other thanSHC by? Temples, clubs, units,or Shriners acting within theircapacity as a Shriner are con-sistent with the bylaws. In addition to the languageof the bylaws and General Or-der #1, which clearly sets forththe overriding concept of sup-porting SHC as our sole Char-ity, practical concerns also

support this limitation. Lastyear’s budget for Shriner’sHospitals for children showeda budget deficit of roughly$165 million dollars. Futurebudgets, based upon an infla-tion factor of 6% forhealthcare, would indicate thebudget deficits will soon be aquarter of a billion dollars an-nually assuming no additionalservices are provided. The cu-mulative effect of Shrine enti-ties providing charitable fund-ing for charitable efforts otherthan SHC would result in ahuge amount of money beingdiverted to charitable effortsfor outside charities while ourown charity faces extremelyhigh budget deficits. While there are severalother charitable efforts thatare very worthwhile, none ofthem are “Our” Charities. It isalso surprising that in themarketplace of good causesand charitable efforts, Shrineentities or Nobles (in their ca-pacity as Shriners) would be-lieve that there are charitableefforts worthier of supportthan our own charity. Thequestion is sometimes raisedrequesting us to identify thespecific prohibition on contri-butions to charitable causesother than SHC. I think a bet-ter question is why Shriners,in their capacity as Shriners,would prefer to support otheror outside charities ratherthan the one we havecovenanted with each other tosupport which is identified asour own.(The rest of this letter can beviewed in the Recorders office)FraternallyJohn C. A PREVIEW OF IOWA’S HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TALENT

An Iowa Hunter‘s Safety Course was held on Saturday May26th at the Shrine Temple. This course is required before any-one born after January 1, 1972 can obtain a hunting license inthe state of Iowa. 26 people attended our first of what we planto be many hunter‘s safety courses sponsored by the SportsmanUnit. Ill. Sir Jay Coon also attended the class. Many western statesrequire passing a Hunter’s Safety Course, regardless of age, toobtain a license to hunt in their state. Our Ill. Sir decided totake advantage of the opportunity. Considering it was a holiday weekend, the turnout was greaterthan expected. The course was led by an Iowa DNR officer andP.P. John Miller, Jr. who just recently became re-certified toteach the class. The feedback on this course was excellent. In fact, one of theparents who attended the class with his son mentioned that he

was going to go onto the DNR webpage and other social mediasites and highly recommend our class to anyone interested intaking the course. The class was completed by everyone in justunder 6 hours with everyone passing! Todd Boender, my father and I prepared a free will donationlunch of hamburgers, hot dogs, fries and cookies. Upcoming events include our Trap Shoot on July 28th (see adin this month‘s edition) and another trout fishing adventure inthe fall being planned by Todd Boender. You know we will sneakin a few day long or weekend trips as they become available. Ifyou want to be a part of the fun and adventure, come see us. Weare still meeting on the 4th Wednesday of the month at theTemple around 6:30pm for a meal followed by our meeting.

Food for thought for all Nobles: When we walk a lighted pathat night, it’s easy to see where we are going. If the lights werenot there, we would have to slow our pace as not to trip over anobstacle. Each of our lives is a journey, and although we maynot know what lies ahead, we know our way is illuminated byour inner light. Nobles, make the journey and shine your innerlight! The May 16th Ladies Nite Dinner was once again hosted bythe Stecker family and consisted of Prime Rib and all the ex-tras. This was a great meal – again! If you missed it, shame onyou. The June 20th Ladies Nite Dinner consisted of Cavatelli andwas hosted by Dan and Cyndi Brogden. An excellent meal! The July 18th Ladies Nite Dinner will be a Steak feed hostedby several Nobels and their ladies.
