Membership News

Dear Members,

Although I really hesitate to even think of the word “hurricane”,we have certainly heard it in the news lately as well as seeing all ofthe hurricane guides sprouting up everywhere. I want to remind allof the members that in the event we do have any storms andsubsequent power outages that we will make every effort to keepyou updated on the status of the club’s facilities. If at all possible, aswe did last year, we will keep you informed and have letters at thefront and back gates if we are unable to e-mail. I’m trying to keepvery positive, however, and hope that this will not be necessary.

In the meantime, and with happier thoughts, please remember tocheck the web site, newsletters and flyer racks for the summer’supcoming events. Some of the events planned include our annualbarbecue on July 4th followed by dinner that evening, Cabaret Nightwith the great group Synd’Cats on Saturday, July 15th, Happy Hoursevery Friday evening starting at 5:30 P.M. with extended HappyHours on two Fridays a month, and Cabaret Night with the comedyof Bruce Smirnoff and music of Dianne King on Saturday, August19th. From The Finance Committee

I hope you are enjoying the summer. The members of the FinanceCommittee will begin their review of the budget for the 2006-2007 fiscal year on June 28th. The By Laws of the club requirethat the Finance Committee recommend to the Board ofGovernors for approval the annual operating budget. On July25th the Board of Governors will begin its review of the Budget. The Budget will either be adopted as presented by the FinanceCommittee or can be amended by the Board of Governors. Oncethe budget is adopted the Board will determine the amount ofdues needed by each member class to satisfy the budget.

From an operating point of view the financial results throughMay 31, 2006 shows an operating profit. There still exist manytiming related issues regarding expenditures as a result of thehurricanes. We expect there to be timing issues throughout theremainder of the year as a result of delayed expenditures.Management is working towards reducing expenditures duringthe last four months of our fiscal year to remain profitable for theentire year. Operating revenues exceed operating expenses by$467,000. Net hurricane expenses after a partial recovery of lossesfrom our insurance company totaled $1,394,000. Interest on reservefund balances totaled $44,000. After deducting hurricane expensesand adding in the interest on the reserve balances, total expensesexceed revenues by $883,000. We expect to be submitting a claimto our insurance company to recover the balance of our damageswithin the next thirty days.

Working capital shows an operating deficit of $1,008,000 whichwill improve once we begin to recover the balance of theexpenditures incurred related to the hurricanes from the insurancecompany and receive the Water settlement money for the OldCourse.

On a positive note the Club has available free cash reserves ofapproximately $2,600,000 segregated in bank accounts.

Please address any questions regarding financial matters in writingto the Finance Committee at the Club or e mail [email protected].

Turf TalkJoseph Hubbard, CGCS

For those of you here in the summer, I know you can see a big differencetaking place on our turf, with special emphasis on the fairways betweenwhere we were last year and now. The programs we have institutedhave taken hold and we now have two well-defined courses we canhave fun playing while enjoying the aesthetic value. With the newgrass beds and multiple tree additions, the dynamics that were alwaysenvisioned for both golf courses are now more pronounced.

Paul Latshaw recent visit to both golf coursessharing his knowledge and experience.Jack Hardy, Old Course SuperintendentPaul Latshaw and Joseph Hubbard, CGCS,Director of Golf Course Maintenance

Paul R. Latshawwas contacted byMr. John Creanand the Board ofGovernors toconsult for BrokenSound Club intrying to helpstimulate ourtifsport bermudagrass on thefairways, tees and

high traffic areas. His visit took place atthe beginning of June. A report wasgenerated for the Board, Joseph Hubbard,CGCS and Mr. Crean that addressed whathe observed and comments on theaggressive program we have instituted toturn the courses around as quickly aspossible. Further reports are forthcomingas the soil tests reach him and, along withJoe Hubbard, tries to find a solution to anyproblems that may be present.

Mr. Latshaw’s credentials include 40 yearsof experience as one of the premieresuperintendents in the country and is nowone of the most sought after turfgrassconsultants in the industry. Latshaw isnoted to have prepared more golf coursesfor major championships than anyone else.He currently finished consulting for JackNicklaus and Paul’s own son, Paul B.Latshaw, at Muirfield Village and is now atthis writing at Winged Foot putting thefinishing touches on for the US Open. Afew of Paul’s stints as superintendentinclude Oakmont Country Club,Congressional Country Club, Winged Footand Augusta National. He has hosted fourMaster’s tournaments, two PGAChampionships, one US Open and two USSenior Open Championships besidesconsulting on several other majors the pastseveral years.

CLUB COURSE:With the visit of Paul Latshaw, one ofthe premiere golf course consultants inthe world, we have validated that we areon track with the aggressive program forthe fairways and remainder of the golfcourse. His suggestions of being evenmore aggressive were taken seriouslyunder consideration (please seenewsletter side bar story on Latshaw’svisit).

Projects Update:Financially we will be able to do somekey weak tees around the course beforenext season in seashore paspalum turf. The sod on a few tees we already did inpaspalum did not survive the shippingfrom Georgia and had to be replaced. The tees topped in paspalum last yearare exceptional.

We are continuing to add more beds foraesthetic purposes around tees and wide-open areas throughout the course. Thebiggest burden is finding the labor tomaintain all the beds and landscapingadded in the last two years. The plan isto utilize the clubhouse landscapemaintenance crew to upkeep the bedsalong with whomever we can assign tothe tasks.

Phase I of the Jaskela overall landscapeplan, which was modified by us to helpreplenish tree loss from the hurricanes,is completed. Phase II will beimplemented next spring and summer onthe long-range multi-year plan.

Planning and funding the project for thedriving range drainage and reconfiguringthe practice area is ongoing. Thisproject’s goal is the expansion of all thetees, conversion to seashore paspalumgrass, move and rebuild the chippinggreen compound, add a practice puttinggreen across from the starter shed andpossibly sod the target greens as wellwith paspalum.

OLD COURSE:The big news is the preparation for the OldCourse for the Champion’s Tour event inFebruary. The discussion will be takingplace whether to overseed the rough withryegrass and grow it to 5" height. Thecourse from above and around will bedefined most definitely with the rye, however, what will the impact be to ourrough? Either way we will be able to makethe course recovery as expeditious aspossible.

Projects Update:Other than a few new tree issues and a fewsmall beds, we have completed ourlandscaping beds for the year.

Rebuilding the rear driving range facilityand adding more square footage to themain driving range tee is still desirable. Theexpansion needs to be started immediatelyand completed in a timely fashion to beready for the upcoming season.

The deep tine aerifier has completed its firstoverall aerification along with the pullbehind and walking aerifiers. We willcontinue to punch the golf course to breakthe compacted layer and soften the golfcourse.

Landscape timber will be added alongseveral coquina paths throughout.

Bunker consistency and sand additions willbe a priority to keep the sand as pure aspossible for the winter play.

We are still adding cart path extensions tokeep the carts more confined in areas toallow the surrounding areas to flourishwith a break from the repeatedcompaction.

Expansion of the practice putting greenwill need to be addressed for the increasedplay and the Tour event.

An additional rear tee on #17 that will add35 to 50 yards of distance will be built.

Beyond Golf, Tennis and Cards

Yes, there is a life beyond golf, cards and tennis and the CommunityOutreach Committee (under the leadership of the Social Committeeof Broken Sound) is providing an opportunity for you to enrichyour life by volunteering at Calusa Elementary School.

Calusa Volunteers atAppreciation BreakfastVivian Drozdoff,Bette Wohlgemuth,Paul Wohlgemuth,Irwin Niditch(not present...Judy Friedmanand Paula Gluckman)

It is a chance to make a difference,a huge difference, in the life of astudent by sharing a small amountof your time. If you are willing tohelp a child, then this is for you.

It requires as little as one hour aweek (more if you wish) and it isvery much appreciated by ourneighbors on Clint Moore Rd. Abackground in education is notneeded, and men as well as womenare welcome. You will receiveguidance and ongoing assistance.

Volunteer...help a person to readtoday, and open their world to anew tomorrow. It is a verygratifying program and therewards will far exceed yourexpectations.

In addition to the readingprogram, there is a need in allareas of the school.

Help is welcome in the office, lunch room, media labs, specialeducation and for specialevents.

I welcome all inquiries and willbe more than happy to answerany questions that you mighthave. Please call me at 995-0727or e-mail at [email protected].

I look forward to hearing fromyou.

Thank you, in advance.Bette WohlgemuthChair-CommunityOutreach of Broken Sound
