Hoza Do I Rest? Letme count the zaays...I
lo,Thett he said to them,
"Go your way. Eat the fat and dink suielet utine nnd smd portions to anyone zaho has nothing ready,
for this day is holY to our Lotd.
And do not be griezted, for the ioy of the LORD is your strength-"
Nehemiah 8:10
Did you catch the reminder in the last part of the above verse? The Lord's joy is our
strength! Not muscles or education or money or Power... but God's joy and our joy in God. Ithink that is one of the main reasons God says so much about Sabbath, about rest throughout
Scripture. As many of you may know, in August I will be taking a mini-Sabbatical, a ihree week leave
to concentrate on just the very thing this verse is describing - knowing the Lord's joy as the
strength at work i. my life. With that in mind, I would encourage you to find times and take
regular time for rest. Now I do not mean sleep or naps or vacations or sedentary sitting. What
I mean is active living in God's joy. It is such active living concentrated on the joy of the Lord
that renews God's strength in us. This leads to a increasing celebration of His joy i. our lives.
Below is a portion of an article I ran across that is serving to frame my Sabbatical time.perhaps you will find some convicting words, as well as some comforting words in this article.
Lastly,I thank you, the Arkport Presbyterian Church, for the support, encouragement, love,
and faith you have shown me and my family for these almost seven years. We count ourselves
blessed to be called to this particular congregatiort to you precious followers of Christ. May
God continue to lead, guide, bless, grow, and challenge us to go deeper in Christ and further
with Christ in this sin-broken world, all to the end of His increasing joy i. our lives.
ChristianitY: More Like aDoV OfflBy Bob Glenn, Pastor in Minnetonka, MN
Last fall I took my first sabbatical in 15 years of ministry. Initially, I had no idea what to do.
So I called a pastor friend and asked how I could be productive during the time off.
Ironic. Aproductiae sabbatical! Obviously, if I was trying to make rest productive, I had a
very practical problem with the whole idea of sabbatical
I had spent my entire pastorate working six-day, eighfy-hour weeks. I had no category for
rest. . . until the Lord led me to Hebrews 4:10-For zuhoeaer has entered God's rest hns also rested from his works as God did-
As I read this familiar passage, I thought "'Christianify is more like a day off than a day at
the office." ,
Then came another insight-from Jack Miller to a Ugandan missionary:
"[M]ake sure you are enjoying yourself and not taking your work too seriously. You don't
have anything to prove.to us or the world. The work is finished at Calvary, and that workalone has unlimited meaning and value. Keep your focus there.
Here was my problem: I was living as if Christianity was a day at the office.Instead of
hearing jesus say "Itis finished" and putting'all my "doing" dowry I was looking to my workas my salvation. Butwith a renewed realization of the gospel of grace-that Christianily is a
d.ay off-Iwas able to turn from my subtle works-righteousness to rest in Christ.

ftrn/^.-QZ---Pastor SteveMy Lord God,
I have no idea where I am going. I do
not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know-
for certain where it will end. Nor do I really
know myself. And the fact that I think that Iam following your will does not mean that Iam actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please
you does, in fact please you. And I hope I
have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope
that I will never do anythingapart from that
desire. And I know that if I do this, you will
lead me by the right road, though I may know
nothing about it.
Therefore will I trust you ahvays.
Though I may seem to be lost and in the
shadow of death, I will not fear, for you are
with me, and you wiil never leave me to face
my perils alone.

If you want to interpret well and confidently,
set Christ before you, for He is the man to
whom it all applies, everybit of it.

The Jesus of the New Testament has least one
advantage over the Jesus of modern
construction ---- He is real.
(J. Gresham Machen)
There is nothing holier, or better, or safer,
than to content ourselves with the authority ofChrist alone. (lotrn CAvin;

We would like your help withphase two. If you are thinning flowers this year and wouldlike to donate bulbs to the memorial gardens, we wouldlove to include them in the garden to beautify our chruch'sproperty. We would like this garden to reflect the many
families that our church represents. Some examples of flowers that would complete thememorial gardens are:Conefl ower, D affqdil s, Tulips, Black-eyed Susan,Hyacinths, Phlox.
