From Father Jordan
My Brothers and Sisters,
May the Grace of Our Lord remain always with us!
Thankful Reflections
Saturday, June 1, marks a very important anniversary in my life. June 1 is the sixteenth anniversary of my ordination to the Priesthood of Jesus Christ! I can remember the day perfectly! I thought it would never arrive, and I had waited for years to become a priest.
I entered the seminary in September of 1970 – I was thirteen years old. I attended a high school seminary in Princeton, New Jersey; it was run by the Vincentian Fathers and Brothers. When I was growing up many young men and women “entered” the seminary or convent as they began their high school education. As the youngest of three children, my parents weren’t too keen on the idea, but they eventually yielded. I loved the life we led at “Princeton” as we called it. As much as I loved the life, the early 1970’s was a tumultuous time in our country and our Church, and upon graduation I took a “year off” before progressing to the College Seminary. I returned at the end of that year, but my return would be short lived. For a number of reasons, I left the seminary again, finishing college, working, owning my own home, teaching, and developing a concert career. Eventually, I had to admit to myself and to all those who knew me, that as successful as I was, I was not happy. Gratefully, I was allowed to return to the Order and made my Profession of Simple and Solemn Vows and was ordained in the Church of Saint Vincent Ferrer in River Forest, IL. in 2003.
June 1, 2003 was Ascension Sunday in the Archdiocese of Chicago: it was a glorious day filled with sunshine, family, and friends. My parents were already at home with the Lord, but I kept telling myself they had the best seat in the house! From the heights of heaven, I felt their presence. My father’s brother, Uncle Bob, was there as the patriarch of the Kelly Clan; and my beloved Aunt Lou, my mother’s sister, was there representing my mother’s family. I rejoice that my Aunt and Uncle were present that day – Uncle Bob is going strong at 95. On Friday of
last week, I buried my Aunt Lou. At age 96.5 she quietly went to God as she kept saying, “it is so beautiful….!” May her memory be eternal!
God’s Time
1970 – 2003 spans thirty–three years – a long time to become a priest, or anything else! For some reason God knew that the first date for my ordination, 1988, just wasn’t right for me or for the Church. No matter when, by His Grace and Mercy, I am a Priest of Jesus Christ. I am grateful beyond words to be a Dominican, and to be a Dominican– Priest: I could never have planned such a wonderful life, but God did – His time is always right.
As I stood with my family last week and said goodbye to our matriarch, my heart was filled with gratitude: gratitude for my family; gratitude that Aunt Lou and Uncle Bob were there on my ordination day; gratitude that God brought His Will for me to fruition by my religious profession and by my priestly ordination. I hope these words give you a glimpse into who I am, why certain things mean so very much to me, and that you know the biggest part of my heart: faith, family, and a life of service after the mind and heart of Christ the High Priest.
How long has it been since St. Sebastian Parish had a son of the Parish become a priest? I invite any young man in the Parish to consider this “Most Glorious life - the life of a priest!” Let us all pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life.
Sixteen years ago, on June 1, one of my most recalcitrant students said to me at the end of the Ordination Mass, “Gee, Fr. Jordan, now that you are a priest, you can marry me when the time comes.” I’m not with you this weekend, because…. I am in Florida performing the wedding of that student who
is now a leader of a major non-profit!! ☺ God’s time is best!
Until we meet at the altar…. O Mary, conceived
without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee!

Quo Vadis Day Camp
Quo Vadis is the Latin for “where are you going?”. Each one of us begins to answer that question as we progress through school.
All Catholic boys of high school age are invited to
attend a Quo Vadis Days Camp to spend time with
other young men discovering their purpose in life
while having fun. The camp will be held from July
30 – August 2 at the Seminary of Our Lady of
Providence. Quo Vadis Days Camp is led by priests
and seminarians of the Diocese of Providence and
is supported by the Office of Vocations. The camp
will include reflections from priests and laymen
from around the diocese, Mass with our bishop, an
outdoor challenge course and a number of other
fun activities. For more information, please contact
Father Christopher Murphy at (401) 331-1316 or
email [email protected]. To register online,
please visit http://qvdays.org/register/diocese-of-
providence. There is also a poster about Quo Vadis
Days Camp on the main bulletin in the vestibule of
the Church.

St. Sebastian - 913
Welcome! In my own name and on behalf of the People of Saint Sebastian’s, welcome to our Parish! If you are visiting, coming back to the Church and Mass after some time away, or looking for a Parish, you are most welcome here at Saint Sebastian’s.
Mass Intentions
Church of Saint Sebastian Founded October 15, 1915
BAPTISM Congratulations of the birth of your child!
We require all parents and godparents to attend Sacramental Preparation Classes. Once you have called the rectory to plan for the baptism of your child, we will have someone contact you to set up a special appointment for Preparation Classes. These classes are usually done one on one with each family and are conducted by a couple who are well prepared to teach and assist in Baptismal Preparation.
MARRIAGE Congratulations on your engagement and decision to enter into a Catholic marriage! St. Sebastian Parish will help you in your preparation to ensure that you make this serious and sacred step in your life a holy and happy one.
The day and time of your wedding must be arranged in person by the prospective bride and groom themselves as soon as they feel called to marry. No arrangement can be made by phone or parents. All arrangements should be made nine months prior to the wedding date and done prior to scheduling the reception.
The first meeting with the Pastor may be scheduled by calling the Parish Office at (401) 751-0196.
Spiritual preparation is a key part of this special time. Frequent participation in the sacraments during this time is important, particularly weekly Mass attendance. It is also strongly recommended that you bring yourselves to the Sacrament of Reconciliation during this time of preparation.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION By their word and their example, parents are the first and principal teachers of their children concerning our Catholic Faith. The Religious Education of Saint Sebastian’s stands ready to assist parents in their sacred and most important responsibility.
Should you have any questions about the program please contact Ms. Kristen Gold at [email protected] or Mr. Bob Short at [email protected]
CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD Saint Sebastian’s also offers Level One, ages 3 - 6, of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, commonly referred to as CGS. CGS is a Montessori-based program of faith formation. Please contact Mr. Bob Short, Catechist, at [email protected]
