JUNE 2010 Customer Profile: Dalbert Rivera How long have you been surfing? I started surfing in Puerto Rico in the late 80’s when I was twelve. I bought a beat-up 6’3” Gerry Lopez Lightning Bolt board for $20 and I felt like the “Rabbit Bartholomew” of the Caribbean! A couple decades later I tried Stand Up Surfing and it was instant STOKE. It has been three years now! What do you enjoy most about surfing? Surfing gives me the opportunity to enjoy the ocean and get in touch with the inner me. It is one of the few activities were I get to challenge nature’s raw power and get an awesome workout. Besides, even if I had a bad session, I still get out the water with a big smile. If you had to choose just one board to ride, which would it be and why? Hands down my Sub Vector. There’s only one word to describe it: SICK! It is super fast and incredibly loose. I had it for over a month now and can’t wait for the South to get bigger to put it to the ultimate test. What do you do for a living? I’m a Navy Diver. It is the best job in the world. I serve my country, get to travel the world, dive in the most pristine waters and get paid to do it. I know it is I tough job but somebody has to do it. What do you do when you're not surfing or working? Since I grew up in Puerto Rico, baseball was a big part of my childhood and adolescence. I volunteer as a baseball coach for the Boys and Girls Club of Hawaii. It gives me the opportunity to give back to the community and allows me to spend extra time with my son. How long have you been shopping at Hawaiian South Shore? I have been a customer for the last three years. What does your board quiver consist of? I have an all S.U.P quiver consisting of a 10’6” C4 classic, 9’3” PSH Ripper, and a 9’6” C4 Sub Vector.

A couple a weeks ago I cut my shin and knee on the reef. I don’t usually tend to my cuts because I figure it will heal eventually, but after several days of surfing the injury wouldn’t heal. The water kept making the cut worse so I used a water proof Band-aid but the Band aid just came off. A friend of mine, Ryan, suggested I

use a liquid bandage and the “Nexcare” brand liquid bandage. He said last year after injuring himself he tried several brands of liquid bandages but all of them would come off in the water in just one session, but the Nexcare lasted for several days. He also said the cut seemed to heal faster, maybe because nothing was irritating it. So today after several days of surfing and the cut not healing, I went to Longs and bought the Nexcare Liquid Bandage for $8.89. Its was a lot more expensive then any other bands on the shelf but I figured being cheap would end up costing me in the long run. Since Ryan went through all the testing I might as well take his advice and get the Nexcare. I am going to use it this week so I’m hoping it will heal soon. I will let you know how the product works out. Hey... if you have any products that you think everyone out there can use, let us know and we will share it with everyone. Products like these are helpful to us surfers so email me at [email protected] if you have a product you use.

Certain images become touchstones in a surfer’s mind—a combination of place, era, and a particular wave rider that resonate with meaning. And sometimes these images are not even specific photographs, but merely an idea. A Jeff Divine photo of Eddie Aikau poised on the drop at 12-foot Sunset during the Duke in 1973 exemplifies Hawaiian-style surfing—Eddie’s Bully Boy stance, his complete command of the situation. That singular image, re-enacted in 10,000 solitary moments all across the Pacific, captures the essence of Dick Brewer’s surfboards.Moving to Oahu from Long Beach, California, in 1960, Brewer became one of the premier shapers of his generation, and of generations to follow. In an era when surfers made their own boards out of necessity and from personal surfing experiences, many top riders recognized Brewer’s design prowess, which he validated in big-wave exploits across the North Shore. Buzzy Trent, Eddie Aikau, and Jeff Hakman were early devotees of Brewer surfboards, followed by Darrick Doerner, Laird Hamilton, and many of the crew at both Todos Santos and Mavericks today. Bruce Irons won the Eddie at Waimea two years ago on a contemporary Brewer gun, bringing an element of true high-

performance surfing to the big-wave arena. Though perhaps best known for his clean pintail guns for giant waves, Brewer’s contribution to the shortboard revolution cannot be overstated. His “mini-gun” designs—shorter pintails, put to famous use under the feet of riders like Reno Abellira, Jock Sutherland, and Barry Kanaiaupuni—redefined surfing in the late-’60s and well into the ’70s. His tucked-under rail configuration is often credited as the design element that allowed surfers to begin getting deep tube-rides. The mini-gun also allowed surfers to throw hooking turns in the pocket of the clean and powerful Hawaiian surf, whereas earlier boards were based on a “run for the shoulder” mentality. Bridging what he and his riders discovered, Brewer then incorporated high-performance elements like rolled vee and concaves back into his 9-foot and bigger boards, making guns that seem to gather their own momentum when paddling into huge waves. With both celebrity and underground surfers as a customer base, Brewer continues his craft to this day, having mentored a number of prominent shapers over the years as well. His brand of surfboard shaping, having come through the most dynamic eras of design change in surfing, has a base in true craftsmanship that is missing somehow in the mass-produced boards of today. “Yeah,” he says, “the shaping is very important to me,” which is a wonderful thing for surfing’s lineage, as future generations will have Brewer surfboards to refer to—touchstones at the very heart of the culture. The Tor-O Model (Pronounce like the fatty Tuna)

This model is a mix of the old and the new. The front half is a retro style fish with a

full nose to catch waves in any conditions. The Back half is shaped to work like a

performance shortboard, the thin rails make it turn effortlessly. The bottom is flat in the front

and has a single concave running through the tail. It lets the board flow over flat sections

and maintains a lot of speed down the line. The moon tail acts like a big tail pipe letting

the water out the back without any resistance. Good for any conditions, for intermediate to advance riders in knee high to over head waves. If you are looking for a retro board

but don’t want a sluggish, hard turning board, then this Tor-O model is your answer. Now

available in hand shaped eps epoxy. Five fin FCS for many different fin configurations.

The “Fast Model” is based off the famous Pipeliner with a pulled in nose

for performance riding. There is a slight kick in the nose and tail, but not so much that it will cause the board to push water. The slight tail rocker helps you turn quicker at the top for tighter turns. Made for small to over head

waves. Very good for reef and beach breaks.

The "Silk Model" is named for its smooth turning and glide thru the water

riding ability. Brewer reversed the blank making the nose rocker very low and the tail rocker high. The low front will make it easy to catch waves and

high tail will help you get unreal hang time. The single concave in the nose lets water just slide thru the bottom

of the board. and the Vee in the tail gives you a smooth turn. The water will flow off the tail and not release

super fast making for a silky smooth turn.
