Perfect love casts out fear…. Whoever fears has not reached perfection in love. 1 John 4:18

Dear church,

This past Saturday I had the pleasure of attending a training for camp staff at Loch

Leven. I got to spend the day with our site director, Sloan Hamilton, and her hus-

band Joseph Mondragon, who put on an excellent training seminar. I also had the pleasure of getting to

know some of the counselors & directors for our summer camps, and am extremely pleased at the high level

of commitment & dedication they bring to our camp program.

At one point it was mentioned that some people have a misconception of what camp at Loch Leven is

like. Some imagine that church camp involves a week of high-pressure Bible thumping, with a goal of get-

ting campers to tremble in their souls for their salvation and get their “unsaved” friends to repent and con-

fess and thus be saved from the fires of hell.

I don’t think anyone at Bixby Knolls Christian Church has that misconception, but just in case, let me beclear: that is not what camp at Loch Leven is about. There are, I suppose, camps like that, but Loch Leven

is not one of them. The spirituality that is nurtured at Loch Leven is a spirituality of love, not fear.

It’s something I’ve said before, and something I’ll say again: Christianity is not a religion of fear, but a

religion of love. Eugene Peterson’s translation of the verse at the top of this column says, “Well-formed love

banishes fear…. A fearful life – fear of death, fear of judgment – is one not yet fully formed in love.”

Everything we do at Bixby Knolls Christian Church – and everything we do at Loch Leven – is designed to

help people become “fully formed in love.” There is no room for fear or condemnation.

With gratitude,

Pastor Danny

P.S. If your child is not yet registered for camp at Loch Leven, it’s not too late. Early bird discounts are

no longer applicable for some camps, but all weeks are still accepting registrations. A week at camp is the

absolute best way to help young people develop lifelong commitments to following the way of Christ. Visit

www.lochleven.org or call the church office today for

more info.

Ready for the adventure of a lifetime?

At Sky, our Vacation Bible School for 2012, kids discover that everything is possible with God! Sky is filled with

incredible Bible-learning experiences kids see, hear, touch, and even taste! Sciency-Fun Gizmos, team-building games,

cool Bible songs, and tasty treats are just a few of the Sky activities that help faith flow into real life. (Since everything

is hands-on, kids might get a little messy. Be sure to send them in play clothes and safe shoes.) Plus, we’ll

help kids discover how to see evidence of God in everyday life—something we call God Sightings. Get ready

to hear that phrase a lot!Sky takes place July 16-20 (9am to noon) at Bixby Knolls Christian Church, and is for kids in

kindergarten through 6th grade. In addition, teens and adults join in the fun by serving as volun-

teer guides & station leaders. Due to the generosity of BKCC members & friends who have made

special gifts in support of Vacation Bible School, we are able to offer this program at no cost to

those who attend!

Whether or not you personally will be participating in Sky, we can use your help! Please pray for

the success of this event; please invite friends & neighbors to attend; and please stay tuned for do-

nations of materials that may be needed as we get closer to July 16. Thank you!

Bixby Knolls Christian Church is a drop off location for the

Kim Foot & Ankle Shoe Drive. We are collecting new and used shoes which will

be given to people who need them here in Los Angeles County as well as in Mex-

ico & Japan. Our goal: “No shoeless person in the world!”

The donation box is located in the narthex. Bring your shoes with you to

worship, Wednesday Night Dinner, or drop them off during office hours.

30-minute Litter Pickup

Our next monthly 30-minute litter pickup takes place at a special time: Friday, June

15, at 11:00am. Please meet at the gate in front of the church. We might do some-

thing fun afterwards, to celebrate what is for many the first day of summer vacation!

Our next Rekindle worship service will take place on Sunday, June 24,at 6:12 p.m. Rekindle is a lively, creative, and informal worship service

that takes place once a month. It is loosely patterned after the mu-

sic, keynotes & worship services that take place at summer camp.

This month’s theme is “Happiness.” After worship, we will roast

marshmallows on our patio!

Playingwith Fire

Are you interested in transforming the church to help people be more

Christ-like?

Do you want to share ideas about how to help our movement be more alive?

If so, then you might be interested in Playing With Fire , an event sponsored by the western Regions

in Ministry of the Disciples of Christ. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/pwfgatheringor

Miracle on 43rd Street is our region’s 2012 mission

outreach in our own backyard. It takes place June 27 -

July 1 at United Christian Church in Los Angeles. A

historically African-American congregation in a mostly

Spanish-speaking neighborhood where 72% of the resi-

dents have never finished high school. It is one of the

most densely crowded neighborhoods in southern Cali-

fornia. The need for a Christian witness of healing and

wholeness is great.

Help is needed to: paint the sanctuary; install new flooring in the sanctuary; remove the pews;

clean and polish the pews; re-install the pews; repair and paint drywall; replace light fixtures; replacelamps; paint the dining hall; clean and paint the cupboards in the kitchen; mend and paint the

wrought iron fencing; install irrigation and landscaping; re-stripe parking lots and as with every

church facility, there’s always window washing, general cleaning and closets to be organized. This

unique service project focuses on bringing the best of our gifts, resources and talents as an expression

of God’s love and empowerment to a welcoming community.

In addition, there will be a  Youth Experience held in conjunction with Miracle Week; high

school youth from throughout the United States will be coming to participate in mission projects at

United Christian Church (in conjunction with Miracle Week) as well as at other locations in Los An-

geles. Evenings will include worship & a special music concert. Pastor Danny is on the planning

team for the youth event, so interested youth should talk with him.
