Prayer for our Nation God our Father, giver of life, we entrust the United States of America to your loving care. You are the rock on which this nation was founded. You alone are the true source of our cherished rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Reclaim this land for your glory and dwell among your peo-ple. Send your Spirit to touch the hearts of our nation’s leaders. Open their minds to the great worth of human life and the responsibilities that accompany human freedom. Remind your people that true happiness is rooted in seeking and doing your will. Through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, patroness of our land, grant us the courage to reject the “culture of death.” Lead us into a new millennium of life. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

“All the nations you have made shall come to bow before you, Lord, and give honor to your name. For you are great and do wondrous deeds; and you alone are God” (Psalm 86:9-10).

Thanksgiving for the Sacrament of Matrimony

FOOD FROM HEAVEN God sustained the people of Israel for forty years in the desert with manna sent down from heaven, and Moses doesn’t want them to forget it. God brought forth water from stone for them to drink, and Moses doesn’t want them to forget this, either. And Moses tells them—twice—that the food that God sent was a food that neither they nor their ancestors before them had ever experienced be-fore. Jesus too speaks of food come down from heav-en, food that the Jewish people had never experi-enced before. Recalling the manna in the desert, Jesus doesn’t want them to forget it either, explain-ing that he is the food and drink of eternal life. And Paul reiterates to the Corinthians and to all of us that in the bread and in the cup, we share in the body and blood of Christ. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Attention Retired Catholics ~ Are you looking for a way to fight cabin fever AND help our needy neigh-bors? IVC is now accepting applications for the Sep-tember start of our next service year. The Ignatian Volunteer Corps (IVC) is a service organization of men and women aged 50 or better who serve others and grow deeper in Christian faith by reflecting and praying in the Ignatian tradition. Volunteers serve 8 or 16 hours a week with local service organizations helping the materially poor. During the current cir-cumstances, volunteers serve either from their home or in an otherwise safe environment. The IVC community also gathers monthly for group reflection, prayer, and spiritual support – via Zoom video con-ference, for now. For more information, go to ivcu-sa.org/neworleans or call Lisa Schillace at (504) 264-3438.

Catholic Charities’ food pantry is open Monday – Thursday from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. The food pantry is located at 2505 Maine Ave in Metairie. Clients should go down the driveway to the left of the building. The food pantry is located in the back building, fourth door from the front. Clients can re-ceive a pre-packed bag of food and some optional supplemental items every two weeks. Clients fill out a simple intake form at their first visit, and at subse-quent visits only need provide their name. Please wear a mask and respect social distancing when receiving assistance.

Living Stewardship Now Feed others in a ministry of hospitality: sign up to help run a parish coffee hour, fish fry, or supper event. Be a team member at a homeless shelter or soup kitchen. Take meals to homebound neighbors. Leave fresh cookies on a newcomer’s doorstep. Copyright © 2010, World Library Publications. All rights re-served.

Saints of the Week

Saturday SAINT ROMUALD (c. 951-1027) Born in nobility, Romuald’s conversion followed the shock of witnessing his father murder an enemy. Renouncing his privileged world, Romuald sought God’s world in monastic life. Its winding turns and several dead ends make Romuald’s journey resonate with all who find life more maze than superhighway. Both the hermit’s solitary struggle and community life’s unique challenges shaped Romuald’s legacy: his vast Camaldolese Benedictine family of monks, nuns, and lay associates who, these thousand years later, from the mountain solitude of Camaldoli, Italy to an urban monas- tery in Berkeley, California—in Asia, Africa, South America, Europe—integrate Romuald’s experience into their witness of solitary prayer, communal charity and worship, and promotion of contemplative spirituality in this world that can so easily distract us from the God who loves it still. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 14, 2020 Not by bread alone does one live, but by every word

JUNE 14, 2020 SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

FLESH AND BLOOD The intimate bond that unites families is well

described by the phrase “flesh and blood.” “How can you treat your own flesh and blood so harshly?” a fa-ther might ask his son. “I can’t give up my baby for adoption; she’s my own flesh and blood,” a daughter may say to her mother. “I love you as though you were my own flesh and blood,” a brother might say to a stepbrother. It is as though our families are an insepa-rable part of us. Even those who have traumatic or abusive experiences with family members recognize the depth of emotional and spiritual connection we have with our families.

In Jesus’ words to the crowds in today’s Gospel we hear him talk about our participation in the Eucha-rist as a sharing in his own flesh and blood. Through the Eucharist Christ himself dwells in us. His divine and eternal life courses through our veins. Like a fami-ly gathered at table, we become more and more inti-mately connected with Christ and one another. As Paul tells us, “We, though many, are one body” (1 Corinthi-ans 10:17), united as members of Christ’s own flesh and blood.

FOR THE LIFE OF THE WORLD Within the Body of Christ today, many are suf-

fering as Jesus once did, and the suffering of one of our “brothers and sisters” should be of deep concern to us. We who partake of the Body and Blood of Christ must be prepared to be broken and poured out as Je-sus was “for the life of the world” (John 6:51). We must become willing to suffer ourselves if it will benefit a member of our own “flesh and blood.”

As you receive Holy Communion this week, open your heart to the intimate connections that unite us as family within the Body of Christ. Then reflect on how those bonds will affect the way you treat your own flesh and blood this week.
