I began exploring creativity at a young age through the school arts programs. I became fascinated with clothing and the world of Fashion. While attend-ing Sonoma State University, I began working in the costume department that exposed me to the world of theatre and costuming.

I love the way costumes communicate stories through clothes. After graduation, I was awarded a Costume Design Assistantship thru the F.A.I.R program for The Oregon Shakespeare Festival. I assisted various productions such as THE WIZ and A WINTERS TALE. I am excited to be back in LA to design and explore. I would like to thank the SMC Fashion & Photo Department, with a special thanks to Jan Ardell, her family and friends for all their support!

“ “Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.

Albert Einstein

This collection is inspired by trash — more accurately what we deem “trash/waste” and what we deem valuable, materially speaking.

I wanted to play with this idea through fashion using wealthy historical figures from different times and different backgrounds to juxtapose their opulence with would-be trash.

Hometown: Sweden

Born and raised in a small town in Sweden, I always wanted something more. My main goal was to move to the capital or abroad or start my own brand. This was my dream. So in October 2014, I stepped out of my comfort zone and applied to the Fashion Program at SMC. After getting accept-ed, I moved to Los Angeles in January 2015. Two years later, I’m working to pursue my dream - to create my own clothing line and start my career. My brand name LAMINA is the word animal spelled backwards. My brand is about animal welfare. My main focus regarding fabric is - it should not be harmful to animals. By not using animal skin, hair or silk, animals will not die or suffer in the creation of my garments. I truly believe that the small changes we make will lead to big changes in the end.

“ “Cruelty is one fashion state-ment we can all do without. Rue McClanahan

Pajamas and old school sportswear is what mostly inspired me to do this collection. It is something that can be worn with a pair of sandals or sneakers at a casual lunch or a night out when dressed with a pair of heels. Another inspiration is nature; all the flowers you see in the daytime, the night sky, and the yellow moon late at night. Something that really caught my eye was a picture of a wolf I stumbled upon when looking for inspiration - the yellow (almost golden) eyes together with its white innocent fur just stunned me. All this together brought me to the color choices of: the yellow moon, thenearly golden wolf eyes, the white fur of the wolf, and the black of the night.

Hometown: Los Angeles, California

I was born and raised in Southern California. I am a housewife and have been married for 29 years, graduating fom college long ago. I began my craft-ing spirit at a young age with embroidery, needle-point and cross stitch. I took a sewing class in high school and continued my hand embellishment with quiling projects. I enjoy painting and drawing. I took fashion classes at SMC a few years ago while becoming disenchanted with what the fashion industry had available for plus-size women. I took classes to see what I could learn and put to use for my personal wardrobe. I am nervous about getting into the game at my age but with my determination, skill and fortitude - I can accomplish anything. I would love to thank my husband, Jack, who without his support, I would not have been able to be creative in so many different ways.

“ “I have a knack for detail work and love to sew things that are old school.

This collection has been inspired by the old musicals and movies from when I was a child. I love the flow of dresseswith petticoats and the beauty of feminine clothing. I like to bring drama and details that are unseen in my garments.

I have a different perspective on fashion because I have been around a lot longer than these younger design students. I think that costumes are a fun way to incorporate many designs that one could not use in everyday life. I can describe what I have designed as more of a winter wedding collection than anything else. The juxtaposition of the song and the color of my collection is interesting to me. I hope you all will enjoy what I have created.

SonyaGarmash

Hometown: Taganrog, Russia

I was born in the south of Russia, near the Ukraine. I spent my childhood years in Moscow studying art and foreign languages and spent my teen-age years studying human rights and rebelling against Russian’s government prohibition of LGBT Propaganda and total destruction of marvelous Russian landscapes and forests. I graduated from one of the oldest and most fascinating art schools in Moscow where I studied watercolor techniques. Later I went to another peculiar art school to study sculpting, drawing and art history. I have always had and still have a huge passion for art and music, literature and film, especially science fiction, languages and of course fashion. After high school I went to International university in Mos-cow to study public relations and stage manage-ment, but two years later, in 2014, I decided to go “back to black” and move to California to study art and fashion. My family and friends supported me in this life-changing decision, et pour que je les remercie!

“ “

Music is one of the biggest inspiration as in my life as in this collection. I am the biggest admirer of metal, gothic and ex-perimental rock, punk and trip hop. Nick Cave and Tom Waits’ sad, depressing yet marvelous songs pushed me to create something dark and decadent, something avant-garde.

Inspiration for my collection also came from Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” by Francis Ford Coppola. Brilliant art director and costume designer Eiko Ishioka made the most fantastic costumes and the most extravagant Dracula’s armor for this film, chosing magnificent colors and shades: black as night and red as blood. I was fascinated by this combination and decided to leave only red and black in my collection. Latex, vinyl and wool will mixtogether on the catwalk in various forms and shades to take your brain to another dimension!

Of all the things I’ve lost - I miss my mind the most. Ozzy Osbourne

Hometown: Detroit, Michigan

I began designing at the age of 9 and created my first pair of sneakers with my mom. I could have never imagined that “My Pink Kisses” brand would become the business that it is today. “Pink Kisses” provides custom shoes for children of all ages, both male and female. Selling pri-marily online, my exclusive brand is at “Books and Cookies” in Santa Monica, currently owned by Chudney Ross, daughter of Diana Ross. In 2012, I moved to New York where I began brand-ing my company and I recently partnered with Ron Robinson’s flagship store and was part of NY Fashion Week 2016. My blooming career as a shoe designer is with incredible lust for life and creativity. I am destined to take the fashion industry by storm.

“ “I am destined to take the fashion industry by storm.

This collection was inspired by my mother and grandmother. Strong women that raised an amazing young lady. They walked with the weight of the universe on their shoulders and made it look like a pair of wings.

This collection is for mothers and daughters allaround the world.

This is a mommy and me collection.

IngridLaghi

Hometown: Rimini, Italy

I was born and raised at San Patrignano, a recovery community run by my parents for young people who had lost their way. At a young age, I was part of a big international family where the importance of dignity, humility, responsibility, self-esteem were part of our daily lessons. Later, I attended Architect High School where I discovered my passion for fashion. Making clothes and accessories gave me peace filling me with joy. I started with painting, deconstructing, and cus-tomizing old clothes and shoes. I worked in retail for 7 years until 2014 when I was ready to follow my dreams and move to America. A place where everything is possible. This decision and the work I have done in the last few years has finally brought me TRUE HAPPINESS. I will never stop thanking my family for making me the person I am and for their unwavering moral support as I move towards a bright future.

This collection is inspired by the strong feelings manifested from my connection to Southern California in the last year. The timeless breezes along Venice Beach thatgives life to every breath, the colorful flowers andthe equally colorful smiles of the people surrounding me, the golden sunsets, and the simple beauty of the life.

I am using soft fabrics such as silk, lace, and chamois to represent my freedom, my gratitude, and mydeep soulful happiness in life.

When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone isblessed.

Hometown: Beijing, China

Coming from Beijing, I was raised with deep emotion towards the history of China, especial-ly in clothing. In kindergarden, I started to show promise in the arts. Drawing, sewing and dancing became my favorite things. However, my family had a strong will for me to becoming a scientist. So I started my journey in science. After a long time of struggling and questioning life after my Master’s graduation, I decided to come back and chase my dream. I always wanted to be a de-signer. Fortunately, my family understood this and supported me. The fantastic journey of “making my dream come true” started. With my love of fashion and Chinese history, I want to reveal the mystery of the true Chinese clothing history to the whole world.

“ “

My collection is inspired by the clothing history of China going back thousands of years. History is what we are made of, and on ourselves this history has been transferred into a new form of creation.

Due to the dynasty changes in China’s history, as well asthe clothing changes, some styles were wiped out during these changes, but also some styles were left behind that still affect manycurrent trends seen today. By emphasizing these styles,my silhouettes, drawings, and collection is named after my own name, which means renaissance. This is to bring China’s fashion history alive, and also transform it into a new life.

Hometown: Kyoto, Japan

I was born and raised in Kyoto, Japan. It is the most culturally abundant city in Japan filled with beautiful ancient traditions. Since I was a little girl, I loved crafting and drawing. All my fami-ly members were artistic, so maybe that’s why I grew up immersed in that lifestyle. I started working at a clothing company, and during my 8 years there as a store manager, I became fasci-nated in everything that has to do with fashion design. I was interested in LA-style fashion, so it was natural that I ended up here. I have learned so much from my internship experience and my time here in LA. I would like to incorporate both American and Japanese fashions to create a totally new line.

My collection is based upon “kimonoism”. The Kimono has an enduring tradition that has survived for centuries. My goal was to utilize elements such as kimono ties and loose-fitting silhouettes in a minimalistic style.

I envisioned this line for woman who likes to travel to the ocean or desert resorts, preferably with wind flowing through her attire.

The Kimono is both formal and elegant.I would like to extrapolate this idea into a more contemporary and casual design.

Design is the silent ambassador of your brand.

Growing up in a beautiful place was an un-ending source of awe and inspiration to me. I’ve always loved clothing since I was a young and started sewing at age 6. I fully realized my passion in high school while working as a cos-tumer for musical productions. This opened my creativity and left a distinct historical flavor to my design style. My look has a bohemian vibe, which really resonates with me and my lifestyle. I’m deeply committed to sustainability and environmental consciousness, which is more important than ever. Raising awareness and promoting sustainable production practices through my work as a designer is my ultimate goal. I’ve never been more motivated and pas-sionate about making a change in the world.

My collection is inspired by the beauty of nature. Each piece is constructed from organic cotton, grown on small farms in India with a GOTS certification. This stands for Global Organic Textile Standard. Thisensures not only environmentally sound growing practices, but also sustainable and fair manufacturing and trading as well.

I’ve hand-dyed my fabric using all organic indigo and alkanet plant dyes. Fashion is the second most polluting industry and sustainable production methods are the only way forward. Hopefully I can begin to be the change I want to see in the world. I hope you enjoy my collection!

Hometown: Mexico City, Mexico

I was born in Mexico City and moved to Los Angeles when I was three. My first exposure to fashion was through my parents who worked as seamstresses from home, since I was very young. I can remember my mother showing me how to make a simple hand stitch and giving me scraps of fabric she no longer needed; with which I would then make clothes for my Barbie doll. I didn’t really become completely interested in fashion until much later in life. I love the way clothing can help transform and help express who you are. I want to thank both of my parents who have always supported me in my ability to follow my dreams. I also want to thank my sister, who has always been on my side.

“ “It isn’t what we say or think that defines us, but what we do. Jane Austen

My collection was inspired by the love of 1950’s music that I’ve listened to since I was a little girl. Thanks to my mother’s love of The Beatles, her influence inspired me to pay homage to the 50’s by using amazing silhouettes from this era.

My collection is also inspired by my Mexican heritage and it’s use of beautiful andcolorful embroidery. I really love the bright colors and the many unique, intricate designs used.

I hope you will be inspired too!

Hometown: Fresno, California

I grew up in the central valley in Fresno, California. Most people from there hate it and say it’s boring, but I always loved the time I spent there and it’ll always be home to me. I was always a creative person growing up and wanted to pursue a ca-reer in architecture. In high school I got a job at 16 and started to spend a lot of time at thrift stores. I loved the idea of using my own money to buy af-fordable clothes that nobody else had and repur-posing/modifying them. I didn’t decide I wanted to be a designer until I had spent two years in college. It was sort of spontaneous and last min-ute but I saved as much money as I could in six months then moved to Los Angeles in August of 2014 to pursue my newfound passion.

This Fall collection is mostly inspired by androgyny. I want to make clothes that anybody can wear regardless of sex or gender. I want them to feel comfortable and confident. As I’ve developed my own personal style, I noticed that sometimes I felt more comfortable in men’s clothing. I usually put together both men’s and women’s pieces to create an outfit that is fully expressive of myself. For my collection, I wanted to incorporate details that would be considered more feminine with style lines and silhouettes that would be considered more “masculine” for an end product that anyone and everyone could wear, while also drawing inspiration from bondage wear and tech wear.

I want to make clothes that anybody can wear.

Hometown: San Francisco, California

I was born and raised in the Bay Area and always exposed to diversity, eclectic people and Fashion. From the age of four, I remember Fashion being my expression and my art. My mother always had amazing pieces that I would use to play dress up and get lost in my own world. From scarfs, to be-rets, to coats and heels. I fell in love and nothing made me feel the most like myself than dressing to express myself. From there I started model-ing and found my comfort walking runways and wearing beautiful things. This ultimately lead me to get more involved in creating designs. My mom often sewed for my sister and I and I would draw pieces that I wanted her to make. After having my prom dress designed, I knew I wanted to become a Fashion Designer.

Where art, fashion and music collide: “Love Intersect”.

“Love Intersect” is the crossing of passion and love when they intersect. For me the two things that inspire me most are music and fashion. This collection is for the outspoken dreamer, the girl who dares to see beyond. Influenced by music, it is edgy, yetfeminine. She is free, to be soft, yet bold making no apologies for her self-expression.

Beautiful and awkward embracing herself fully.

Fashion is to create a voice for change in beauty standards, and the world.

Hometown: Texas, USA

I was born in a small town in Texas near the border. As a child, my Tita would wake me up every Monday morning and take me on a bus ride across the border to Morningside Elementary and bought me a Cookies and Cream Hershey’s Bar every time we made the trip.

The best gift she gave me was a small scrap of fab-ric, needle and thread to play with and I later came back with what I called a skirt.

That was the moment that I knew, at the age of seven, I wanted to become a designer.

This collection is a tribute.

My collection is inspired by the mystery of movement in the Walt Disney Concert Hall. The curves and flow of the building as well as the many buildings Frank Gehry designed are proof that softness isn’t a characteristic bound to fabric.

I designed this collection as a representation of my three loves: art, architecture, and design. The clothes presented are meant to work together to create looks that feature simplicity and boldness.

Fashion is the armor to survive every day life.

Hometown: Monclova, Coahuila, Mexico

I was born in Texas and raised in Monclova, Coa-huila, Mexico. When I was 14, I moved to Cabo San Lucas, where my passion for nature, art and bikini’s began. I was surrounded by crystal clear water and white sand beaches, which have inspired me. At 19, my life changed when I moved to LA to study busi-ness. This was my first time on my own, which was the hardest and most rewarding thing I have ever done. After two years, I decided to follow my true passion and study fashion. I knew I wanted to cre-ate art and express myself with fashion and textiles. Thanks to the support of my family and friends, I’m here creating this beautiful line, but especially my mom’s support and guidance. She believed in me through every challenge and I would never have been able to do this without her.

NikkiaSipes

Hometown: Indiana, USA

My love affair with fashion began as a young girl in a small Indiana town. I remember my mother mak-ing beautiful long dresses for my sister and I. So after high school I moved to LA to pursue modeling and study fashion merchandising. I never thought I could ever be a designer. I ended up working in the music, art, and entertainment busi-nesses – but not fashion. I even lived in beautiful Kauai. I didn’t have confidence in my own creativity. It turns out that I could not have been more wrong when my life was forever changed by hoop danc-ing, the flow art of melding music and movement. I discovered I was bubbling over with creativity just waiting to be unleashed – from my hoop. So my dream of fashion design was reawakened. I re-turned to study my true passion – design. Finding oneself is the best success of all.

My Halters & Hoodies collection was inspired by three of my loves: hooping, hoodies and halters, made from luxurious sustainable Modal and Bamboo fabrics treated with a reverse dying process.

There’s a lot of FUNction and versatility in this collection. I’m an Eco-Chic designer. I want my designs to make a statement and serve a bigger social purpose. I’m so excited to attach such an important message of sustainability to my work.

My biggest goal is to live a life that I love where I can make a difference.

My passion now has a bigger purpose and I am living my life by design.

You either live life by default or by design.

These charming emotions make women I feel morebeautiful. I want my collection to bring out awoman’s attraction and create a feeling of beingin love. Hometown: Yamanashi, Japan

I was born and grew up in Yamanashi, Japan. I have played soccer since I was seven. I love soccer and love soccer shoes. One day, I came across NIKE ID that allows a person to customize and buy their own shoes. This inspired me to want to create shoewear. I studied product design in Japan and set out to study fashion design at SMC two years ago in order to get extensive knowledge to be a shoe designer. I didn’t know anything about fashion, but my professors made me love fashion design. Nowadays, I feel that I want to work in the fashion industry as a fashion designer, even though my future goal is to become a shoe designer at NIKE.

My collection is inspired by disabled people. I saw many disabled people in the US. and I thought they might have different feelings that able-bodied people can’t feel, and that can be beautiful.

My collection can be worn by both disabled and abled-bodied women. Each of the four outfits are inspired by four impediments: arms, legs, hearing and speech-impairments.

I am expressing invisibility byusing geometrical shapes inspired by Cubism from the early 20th century avant-garde art movement.

I hope my collection will impress you by showing the possibility of fashion beyond limitations.

Hometown: Sweden

I was born and raised in the southern part of Sweden in a small town in the countryside. I´ve had great interest in fashion for a long time. At the age of 15, I knew I wanted to be involved in the fashion industry. I applied and got accepted to high school that emphasized fashion design. But I dropped out three months later because I wasn´t ready. So I ended up getting a high school degree in Business and Merchandising with focus on Entrepreneurship. After finishing high school I worked for a year when I finally decided it was time to chase my dream to become a fashion designer. I applied to Santa Monica College and got accepted and moved to Los Angeles three months later on January 17, 2016.

My collection is inspired by the life and the culture of the citizens of Los Angeles, with emphasis on Swedish fashion and culture. I chose to base my collection on the inspirations of the streets in LA. The main fabrics in my collection are genuine sustainable leather and faux leather.

Most of the pieces in my collections are two pieces. I believe a designer should be creative and mix different garments and accessories in order to create their own personal stylein their collection.

You get on with life by facing it.

Hometown: Washington, D.C.

I was born in Washington, D.C. and always enjoyed the museums and rural life living outside the city. My mother admired the arts and was skilled with needles. My father was an architect and fine wood-worker. I studied sculpture, film and photography and worked for a time in the film industry in the wardrobe, set design and prop departments. Later on, I moved into interior design focusing on residences and offices.

Utilizing my new skills (thank you Santa Monica College Fashion Department!) and a wealth of other skills and talents, I am now very pleased to satisfy a long-time desire to utilize them all to create a line of accessories.

My collection is inspired by celebrating the exploration of the world around us - from walking across high meadows to biking through urban canyons all while feeling at ease and in style. My collection is inspired by the beauty of mountain meadows and the result of adventuring through the urban environment using a bicycle as a daily driver...going from work to fun and home again, and wanting gear that keeps hands free and delivers style. I have selected fabrics that feel good to the hand, are easy on the earth, and have light-manipulating safety super powers. I designed bags and hats by draping, creating accessories that are form-flattering and life-enhancing.

To love what you do and feel that it matters - how could anything be more fun? Katherine Graham
