    KAIKORAI PRIMARY SCHOOL

    N e w s l e t t e rA very special welcome to Sam Grey, Emma Grey, Noah Blackwood,

Hemione Roach and their families to Kaikorai Primary School!

PRINCIPALS MESSAGEDear Parents,What a busy three weeks it has been! Torrential rain causing flooding and school closures, late starts due to

snow, the Kaikville mini society in action, not to mention teachers busy writing reports! We have included further information inside this newsletter regarding our emergency procedures and how you can help. We we also be using the school interviews website to take bookings from today for parent teacher conferences. These are very important meetings where we also get the opportunity to discuss the reports that will go home next Friday and we hope that all parents can make the time to attend. But the highlight of the last three weeks has been the Kaikville programme. It was wonderful to see the children take their community so seriously and more importantly develop their co-operation, decision making and creativity skills. Your attitude and behaviour during these three days was fantastic and clearly demonstrated our schools values! Kind regards,Simon Clarke

  • SYNDICATE NEWS

Middle News - Kaikville was the place to be this term, and not only were the middles involved in operating companies, they were also learning about advertising and persuasion. The children enjoyed viewing adverts and figuring out the tricks that are used to persuade them to want and buy things. They enjoyed the challenge of using these skills to invent a product and advertise it using jingles and chants. Xtra Maths supports our learning in Maths, and many of our children spend lots of time at school and outside of school hours completing these tasks and challenges. A lot of effort goes into achieving each level of Xtra Maths, as each level gives students a shorter amount of time to complete the tasks. Congratulations and well done to Cormac de la Harpe, Luke Woo and David Zeng who have all completed every level of Xtra Maths. It is not an easy feat as the final programme involves solving problems in under 1.5 seconds!

Junior NewsTeachers have been busy writing the mid-term reports for your child and we look forward to seeing you all at parent interviews in the final week of term.Next term we will not be having PMP or Fun Friday due to the focus on preparing for our whole school production. Our focus for the first 3 weeks is Fire Safety. We will be learning about how to stay safe in our homes and there will be homework for you to share with the children. For the rest of the term each class is going to be looking at an aspect of New Zealand like Kiwiana, famous NZ authors or artists. Each class will inform you what their focus is going to be. This ties in with our production.

Senior NewsThe senior children enjoyed the leadership opportunities provided to them through running their own companies during the Kaikville Programme. Many senior students commented that they now have a better understanding of how hard their parents work!It will soon be decision making time for our Year 6 students on what school to go to next year. To help with this, Kaikorai Primary School works with our local Year 7 providers to provide opportunities to learn more about their options. The Year 6 children will be visiting Balmacewen Intermediate on the 22nd July and KVC on the 30th of June. If you dont want your child to attend a certain schools visit please let your childs teacher know. Many schools will also be visiting with enrollment information on the first week back of Term 2.

  • SCHOOL NEWS

Mini SocietyThe school was buzzing with excitement and productivity as the Kaikville Community went into business. We were very impressed with the students positive attitudes as they designed, made and marketed their goods and services. The Market Day, despite the poor weather, was also very popular with students and parents alike. Thank you to the many parents who supported the children either in the lead up to the programme as experts who helped in companies during the week. Thank you also to the many parents who attended the Market Day. The school raised over $800 for the Nepal Earthquake Fund!Due to the fact that this is the first time we have run a programme such as this, we wanted to carefully evaluate it. We have been amazed at the positive responses we have received from staff, children and parents. We have also learnt a lot from these evaluations and common themes we would want to improve on are:1. An option for business and individuals to save money.2. A Market Day versus being able to trade goods and services for the entire three days.3. Clearer communication on the objectives of the programme with parents.4. How to include all junior students in a relevant but safe way.

But due to the overwhelming positive support of the programme, we will be making Kaikville a regular part of the school learning cycle.

Math Information EveningDue to the flooding that Dunedin suffered we had to postpone our Math Information Evening. This will be rescheduled for Term 3 with exact dates to be confirmed soon.

KPSTV Episode 1After many months of writing, filming, editing, technical, issues and delays, KPSTV has produced their first episode for 2015!
