TRANSCRIPT

MARCH 27, 2016

"This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad! Alleluia!"

Dear Parishioners and Friends,

Happy Easter! If you are visiting family or home from college or the military, we are glad you can join us today. May this day be one of joy and rest for you this Easter.

We especially welcome the newest members of the Catholic Church and St. Rita who joined us at Easter through the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. We welcome our newly baptized: Todd King, Madison Prinzi, Mason Prinzi, and our Candidates: Lillian Graffrath, Victoria Kimbell, Mya Perales, Evan Santiago, and Mia Bella Santiago. We extend our prayers and warmest welcome to you!

Throughout Lent we have been listening in the scriptures about God's desire to establish an everlasting covenant. The Bible is filled with stories of human sin and failures that caused a break in relationship to God, beginning with Adam and Eve. But the Good News is that Jesus is the establishment of a New Covenant, not as Saint Paul will tell us, is made by human hands, but by God. God's plan is to save us! Even though Jesus would be rejected by many and put on a cross, we Christians understand the significance of this transformative event. The cross, once a sign of ridicule and death, becomes a living reminder of life and salvation. By dying on the cross, and by being raised from the dead by His heavenly Father, we share in a future destiny that will no longer end in our separation from God. The sign of our new union with God comes about through Baptism. Jesus makes the graces of the waters of Baptism pour into our hearts so that our lives are forever changed. Jesus restores our union with God a reality. Because of Jesus, evil will not triumph over good. Death and hatred will not endure. Jesus has truly been raised from the dead! Alleluia!

May God bless you! Fr. Gonyo

THE JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY

HISTORY: Israelites in the Old Testament were to keep the Jubilee Year every 50 years (see Leviticus 25:8-55). Pope Boniface VIII opened the first Holy Year in 1300AD; traditions associated with the Holy Year developed over the next centuries (e.g. only in 1500 AD, did Pope Alexander VI open the first Holy Doors at the 4 major basilicas).

POPE FRANCIS announced this Holy Year of Mercy on April 11, 2015, with his letter MISERICORDIAE VULTUS (“Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy” are the opening lines). The Year opened on December 8, 2015, when the Pope opened the Holy Door to St. Peter’s in Rome. On December 13th, he opened the Holy Door to his own cathedral in Rome, St. John Lateran. He also invited all the bishops of the world to open such doors in their own cathedrals. (e.g. Sacred Heart Cathedral here).

PLENARY INDULGENCE: The remission of the temporal punishment due to sins already forgiven. Conditions: 1. Passing through one of the official Holy Doors 2. Reconciliation in confession 3. Receiving Holy Eucharist 4. Praying for the Pope and his intentions 5. Praying the Profession of Faith (The Creed).

The Pope said, “These indulgences may be for ourselves or for those who are deceased.”

LOGO: With the inscription “Merciful like the Father” (from the Gospel of Luke 6:36) was designed by Father Marko Rupnik with Jesus carrying lost humanity on his shoulders.

HYMN: An official hymn was also commissioned for the Jubilee, “Misericordes sicut Pater” with lyrics by Father Eugneio Costa, SJ, and music by Paul Inwood. It has lyrics in Italian, English, Latin and French, and is sung in the Taize-style of chant.

MISSIONARIES OF MERCY were over a hundred selected priests sent by the Pope on Ash Wednesday to all parts of the world with the mission of hearing confessions for even the worst sins.

MAJOR JUBILEE EVENTS (Just a Sampling): 1) For the Roman Curia ~ February 22 2) For Young Boys and girls ~ April 23-25 3) For Deacons ~ May 27-29 4) For Priests ~ June 1-3 5) For the sick and Disabled ~ June 10-12 6) For Catechists ~ September 23-25 7) Marian Jubilee – October 8-9

REGISTRATION: All pilgrims are required to register as a group in advance to take the long walk from Castel Sant’Angelo to St. Peter’s and through the Holy door.

CLOSING: Sunday, November 13 – The closing of the 3 Roman basilica doors and ALL local cathedral doors throughout the world. Sunday, November 20 ~ the Pope closes the Holy Door at St. Peter’s in Rome!!

Spirit of Learning Corner

Did you know ? . . .

+ There are still spaces available in St. Rita's

Kindergarten for the 2016-2017 school year as well as the Pre-Kindergarten 3 and 4 year old classes (we have both half day and full day available). And don't forget: St. Rita's has “Before and After Care” for all grades! Please call the main office for a tour or a registration packet at 671-3132. There is a lot of JOY at St. Rita's!

+ Mrs. Farley's 5th grade class did a beautiful job

presenting the Stations of the Cross on Holy Thursday. A big thank you to her and her students for all of their preparation and hard work.

+ Our Pre-K Teachers share with their students the

Gospel message of that week. For instance, when the Gospel spoke of forgiveness during Lent, the Pre-K classes had a theme of forgiveness woven throughout their days at school.

+ Kindergarten through 6th graders also have faith built

into their school days. This covers the same information that is given in weekly faith formation classes, as well as additional themes such as St. Rita's Olweus Anti-Bullying program. The latest theme has been "Do the Right Thing" which echoes many of the values inherent in our Catholic faith!

All ages are welcome – participants under 12 should attend with an adult or older sibling. Reserve your spot today by emailing [email protected] or by call the office at 671-1100 x14. Admission is one canned or boxed food item per person.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE

AN ALTAR SERVER?

Any boy or girl in 4th grade or older who has received their First

Communion and made Reconciliation can become an altar server. Regular attendance at church, an ability to make a commitment, and a family that values worshipping together are all important characteristics of a successful server. Altar serving promotes responsibility, accountability, leadership and above all, teamwork. It is also a chance for young people to get to know other Catholic children, which helps reinforce moral and ethical values our children need to face the difficult issues in today’s society.

We will be offering an Altar Server Training Session and Refresher on Saturday, April 16 at 2:00pm in Church.

A parent from each family is asked to attend. Sign-up sheets for the next set of schedules (May, June, & July) will be available at this event. Please RSVP to Elizabeth at [email protected] or call 671-1100 x 14.

Pizza will be provided after the training!

A WEEK IN ROME FOR THE HOLY YEAR

Passing through the official Holy Door in St. Peter’s, taking part in an audience with Pope Francis, and obtaining the Holy Year indulgence – all these await anyone who would like to travel with Father Shatzel this fall for a full week in Rome Italy! Father is considering several dates in September or October as possible starting dates, either on Sundays or on Mondays. Unlike last year, this trip would be ONLY ONE WEEK in Rome (and not all over Italy) thus, less expensive and less moving around.

Anyone interested, please see Father Shatzel SOON (let him know which week or dates are best for you). Father must confirm and book the dates during the first week of April – your payments will come due later.

For more information about the events of this Holy Year, visit the official Vatican website at: www.im.va
