Next General Meeting—Thursday, June 16th—short meeting with a pot luck barbecue“

Thanks to those who managed the trip to the Gorge. Unfortunately the brisk winds of Saturday gave into blustery winds Sunday and the in the Harbour racing was can-celled. Fortunately Sam Major had the foresight to plan a scavenger hunt which got us out and about parts of Cortes Island that we would likely have not seen otherwise. The Resort has been sold and we were assured that it was going to remain as a Marina, for the foreseeable future. The Major Mystery Race weekend is the next event on the social calendar. Whether you prefer the docks of Lund or an anchorage in the Copelands, this weekend is always a very good time, for racers and cruisers alike. Dave has planned cruises to the Octopus Islands for the July long weekend, a Discovery cruise at the end July, and the fast becoming a tradition cruise to Shoal Bay for the Labour Day weekend. Club cruises are a great way to explore our coasts and extend friend-ships. I am looking forward to seeing you all at the BBQ on June 16.

The executive is looking for a vol-unteer fill in Secretary for Sep-tember, October and November. Is anyone interested??? Karen Floor is unable to complete her term on the

Executive due to work arrangements. Give it a thought and let us know when it is announced at the june 16th meeting.

Schooner Cove is now on the list of reciprocal moorages!!

The winner of the race to the Gorge was none other than Windsong— Skipper, Hugh Silver… Crew: Mike and Lynda Harris.

Major/Mystery Race—June 11th/12th Start time 10:00 a.m. off Shelter Point to Major Islet. Overnight at Lund or anchor in Copelands. Race back Sunday.

A few scenes from the Gorge Harbour Campout!!! DID YOU KNOW THAT Scientists at the University

of Toronto have invented an infrared-sensitive material five times more efficient at turning the sun’s power into electrical energy than current methods—and it can be sprayed like paint onto any surface! The secret is spe-cially designed minute particles made from semiconduc-tor crystals called quantum dots. They are incredibly small—three to four nanometers across (three to four millionths of a meter). When combined with a polymer (plastic), they can be tuned to capture the light at very large wavelengths, then sprayed onto any fabric or sur-face. The surface of your boat could be one big solar collector. The walls and roof of your house could pas-sively supply a large amount of current energy. It even works on clothing—you could be recharging your cell-phone using your shirt collar!. Getting the new technology into production could be as soon as five years away, as manufacturing the break-through material does not have to be carried out n ster-ile labs with vacuum chambers like the current silicon wafer technology. This new breakthrough could change the way every electric and elec-tronic device operates. The marine industry could certainly benefit from this exciting new way of get-ting more out of “plugging into the sun”! Excerpt from Pacific Yachting—June 2005 issue

We raised $333 in the wine draw at Gorge Harbour. The winners were Hugh Silver, Glen and Verlie Carl-ton (owners of the Gorge Harbour Marina), and a Power Squadron member, Patty Andrews. The raffle was rather successful and it may become an annual event.

The scavenger hunt was also a great suc-cess, being won by Hugh Silver and a young man named Chris who crewed with Katana in the race to the Gorge. Many thanks to Samantha Major for putting the hunt to-gether.

The Canadian Red Cross is looking for sponsorships for Rob Dyke who is swimming around Vancouver Is-land commencing June 8th. He hopes to be finished some time in September. Rob is raising money for Ca-nadian Red Cross Youth Leadership and Water Safety Programs. He also needs the use of a live aboard ves-sel to accompany him around the island, especially on the remote northwest coast. If you can help, please contact Chrissy Tomori at the Canadian Red Cross So-ciety—250-995-3513 or 1-800-661-9055– Ext. 513. Check out the website for more info. www.islandaquathon.ca

The baseball caps are ready for pickup and will be brought to the meeting on the 16th. Blue vests and green sweatshirts are also still avail-able and will be available all year if we order 6 of each at a time.

Remember—next men’s lunch is in September or thereabouts.

The uncooked roast that was taken to the Gorge is safely tucked into a freezer somewhere. In October, there will be a roast beef dinner with all the trimmings. Just another very so-cial night with the Yacht Club. Plan

to attend… these dinners are always fun. This won’t be a potluck. It will be a planned menu and ladies will be phoned to bring something.
