The course was created to address a need for basic coatings skills and knowledge that was lacking in the market at the time. Tony Ippolitti, Business Development Manager with The Sherwin-Williams Company and a C-1 Instructor had this to say about the course, “For many who take the SSPC C-1 class, it is their inaugural introduction to the world of paints and coatings.” Students who take C-1 will learn the basic principles of protective coatings. They will also be able to identify different kinds of corrosion and select coatings that meet specific project demands. C-1 graduates also learn about different coatings and how to select the product that best suits each coatings project. Finally, students will learn about safety hazards involved in coating operations and the importance of following safety best practices. Fundamentals of Protective Coatings (C-1)

This month, CareerPathways takes a look at its flagship training course - Fundamentals of Protective Coatings or “C-1” as it is commonly

known. C-1 is the cornerstone of the SSPC training curriculum and as such, is the starting point for those entering the protective coatings industry.

C-1 was originally written by Dr. Dick Drisko, Senior Technical Advisor for SSPC, in 1995. Dr. Drisko also served as the first instructor for the course, along with colleagues Tony Cunningham, Crone Knoy and Steve Pinney. The course was created to address a need for basic coatings skills and knowledge that was lacking in the market at the time. According to Michael Damiano, SSPC Director of Product Development,

“C-1 was created because it was thought that there might be a market for basic coatings training for new entrants to the industry, especially those who were not going to necessarily pursue higher-level training or certification.”

C-1 provides just such a practical and basic overview for those who are new to the protective coatings industry. However, it can also serve as a refresher for those who want to review the basics of corrosion protection.

Tony Ippolitti, Business Development Manager with The Sherwin-Williams Company and a C-1 Instructor had this to say about the course,

“For many who take the SSPC C-1 class, it is their inaugural introduction to the world of paints and coatings.”

Students who take C-1 will learn the basic principles of protective coatings. They will also be able to identify different kinds of corrosion and select coatings that meet specific project demands.

C-1 graduates also learn about different coatings and how to select the product that best suits each coatings project.

Finally, students will learn about safety hazards involved in coating operations and the importance of following safety best practices. To learn more about C-1 and see a schedule of public offerings, visit www.sspc.org/training/c-1.html. Or call SSPC toll-free at 1.877.281.7772 or (412) 281.2331 (outside the U.S.).
