Here we are almost in June. The time is certainly flying, isn’t it? Since our last newsletter, we’ve had the X ta C race in a heck of a blow, the Pursuit Regatta, and the Wednesday Night Series has gotten into full swing. Maybe it’s just my perception, but it seems to me that this has been one of the windiest (and wettest) springs that I recall. There’s plenty of opportunity to get on your boat and sail; I hope you’re able to take to time to enjoy your floating toy(s). Aside from all the hard work to support OYC activities, it’s been a busy time of year for the club officers in supporting sailing on the lake. In the last few weeks we’ve been involved in the LNYC Fleet Commissioning, the Hospice Regatta, the Spirit of Cooperation dinner between the three clubs, and the PYC Fleet Commissioning. I’m hopeful we’ll generate enough interest to have a lake wide social-oriented boating event. The folks at PYC were very interested in that possibility, so we should be able to put something fun together. Their commodore was particularly interested in a water balloon fight, which I think would be a blast. Summer’s getting close, and it’s the perfect time of year for that sort of thing. Your vice and rear commodores have been working hard to make sure you get your money’s worth for your OYC membership, and I think they’re doing a great job and want to thank them for their efforts. OYC NEWSLETTERVICE COMMODORE PETE’S REPORT

Our first racing event of the year, the “Top Gun”, has yet to be completed. After a good start in promising winds, the fleet while on its way to the “B” marker came to an abrupt halt about 1 ½ hours into the race when the wind totally died. Thankfully, the race committee consisting of volunteers Don Corey and Warren Nye ended our misery and abandoned the race. During our next Racing Committee meeting scheduled for June 25, we will discuss rescheduling the Top Gun for the fall season.

Congratulations are extended to Randall Stevens, a Lake Norman Yacht Club (LNYC) member, who skippered his Ensign 22, “Chorine”, as the fastest boat in the X ta C race with a record breaking corrected time of 1:22:22. Sailing with Randall were his crew members Rogelio Calvo and Gerald Norton. My appreciation is extended to Steve Battel who served as the Race Chairman for the X ta C event.

On May 1-3, Outrigger Yacht Club hosted the Pursuit of Sailing Regatta to benefit the Chuck Strange Foundation with proceeds earmarked to

Close racing on Wednesday night? Could be, but not this time. Sam Sharpe sent a few pictures he took at Charleston Race Week last year. Sam is one of the best photographers around with his ability to capture the essence of competition regardless of the sport. I think most everyone knows of his work in NASCAR, but he is equally adept at sailboat racing photography. You can see more of Sam’s work at http://thesharpeimage.com/

OYC NEWSLETTERREAR COMMODORE’S REPORTAhoy Outriggers!

I hope you are well and making plans for a great summer in 2009.

First, let me thank everyone that helped me with the Pursuit of Sailing Regatta skippers meeting and post race party. A long standing personal commitment conflicted with the event, and several of our fellow OYC members offered to fill in during my absence. The post race party included an auction and raffle that raised a bunch of money for the Chuck Strange Foundation for Adaptive Sailing. The funds will go to the Davidson YMCA or the Sailing Center at Blythe Landing. Everyone I talked with said the party was great fun. We had so many prizes that almost everyone left with something of value. Even if you’re not a racer, you can have some fun and contribute to a great cause when you attend the party. Hope to see you at our next OYC event. Now that the days are getting longer it’s a great time to get out on the water. If you’re like me, you need to put it on the calendar to make it happen. All too often

I forego sailing opportunities because I didn’t plan in advance. You probably have friends, family and neighbors who would love to join you for a cruise, so make a plan, get out on the lake, and have some fun.

See you on the water,Jim

COMMODORE MATT’S NEWS

Their efforts plus those of the board of trustees and event volunteers keep things running smooth. It’s great to see folks roll up their sleeves and help out. Aside from the regularly scheduled events, is there some event you’d like to see OYC put on? If so, feel free to drop me a line. Someone suggested surveying the membership to see what you’d like the club to focus on or add to the calendar. We’ll work on putting one together, so if you get an email invitation to take a survey, please take a few minutes to respond. Your time and opinion will let us know where we should be focusing our efforts.

See you on the water,Matt

VICE COMMODORE PETE’S NEWS

benefit the adaptive sailing program of the newly formed North Carolina Sailing Center at Blythe Landing.

Racing was tight in all three divisions. In Spinnaker A, after splitting wins in the first two races, Dan Meyers skippering “Wahine Magic”, a J-80, edged out Chuck Lineberry’s Soverell 33 “Pearl of Great Price” by only 25 seconds in the last race!

In Non-Spinnaker A, Bob Klutz’s “38 Special” took first place honors over Joe Corriher who sailed “Lucid Dreams” to a second place finish.

In Non-Spinnaker B, Sherry Marcus’ “Luvit” earned three perfect bullets to win first place over Neil Liner’s “Air Transit” who in spite of missing the start in race 3 earned a second place finish.

Congratulations are extended to all the participants for coming out and making this years Pursuit another successful event! A special note of thanks is extended to Bill and Shelly Mann who accompanied me on the Committee Boat during races 1 and 2, and to Warren Nye who served with me on Committee Duty for race 3. In addition, my thanks and appreciation to Rick Rowan who calculated the starting handicaps and tallied the scoring for the entire regatta!

Upon conclusion of the event I received a lot of feed back from the participants regarding the concept of the pursuit type start. Every one I spoke to enjoyed the event and wanted to have more like it in the future. OYC used to host an additional “Pursuit” in the fall, but it was eliminated, for the most part, due to lack of participation. Give me some feed back members, would you support another pursuit in the fall? Attendance has been down in every event we’ve held this year. Only 12 boats registered for the Top Gun. The X ta C only had 7 participants, and the Pursuit only 13 boats. The most recent regatta, the Hospice hosted by Lake Norman Yacht Club (LNYC) only had 12 keelboats registered. Bottom line, we need more commitment and participation!

Having written that, I’d like to report some good news in that the Wednesday Night Series, managed by Race Chairman Doug Riley is going strong with 35 boats registered. To date, we’ve been blessed with great winds and so far have only had to abandon one race due to weather.

You know you want it!I grew up in the era of

mechanical time pieces. And

although I was one of the first

adopters of digital watches, there is

still a very soft spot in my heart for

fine mechanical watches such as the CORUM pictured at the right. This

is the same style watch Bob Klutz

won at the Peninsula Cup Regatta in

September. How I wanted that

watch! But it was not to be - at least not for that day. All of us now have

another opportunity to win one of

these classic watches. Sherry Corbett

is selling chances for $25.00 each

with a maximum of 100 chances sold. Your odds of winning have to

be astronomical. I’ve got my money in the pot already and the best thing about this is all of the proceeds go to our sailing

charities. So how can one really lose? Write that check out and

send it to Sherry. Contact information is on the OYC Web Site.

And do it now before all 100 chances are sold and you’re out of

luck again. Heck. I’m sending in another $25.00.
