President’s Pen

Every now and then you come across an incredible milestone in sport. Last Saturday one of our Over 50s Division One players, Keith Harper, played his 600th game! Yes 600 games for Melville City Hockey Club. What an outstanding effort! His team produced a memorable performance, beating Curtin Trinity Pirates 6 – nil. Keith started with the Club as a junior when they were known as Applecross YMCA Men’s Hockey Club and were based on the river at Thompkins Park. It was later agreed that the Club relocate to Morris Buzzacott Reserve under the banner of Melville City Hockey Club where Keith continued his career. A Life Member Keith has played, coached and umpired at both Junior and Senior level and remains heavily involved in the women’s program as Assistant Coach to the Senior Women’s Squad. I take my hat off to Keith and recognise his life long passion and interest in the great game of Hockey. He is a wonderful role model about the Club and epitomises our Club’s philosophy of remaining involved and giving back to our sport. He still wears his 500 game cap and is looking forward to receiving his 600 game cap as his other one is looking a little the worse for wear. Well done Keith. Our Club will recognise Keith in a more formal manner in the time ahead. This week sees a General Bye for all teams except our AHG Team who have fixtures on Thursday evening and Saturday evening. They have very hectic period of fixtures over a ten day period. Their games are: Thursday 3rd June vs WASPS at PHS at 7pm, followed by 2As;

It is very pleasing to note our Senior women had another victory over the weekend. Well done girls. I hope parents of Junior players have a well earned break before recommencing the season. Equally, I am sure the break for all other players will allow them to rest up and recharge their batteries. Enjoy your time off, Kindest Regards Hans Geers

Mens AHG League vs Aquinas No report Mens Premier 2 vs Aquinas (Lost 2 - 3) Another disappointing result for us. We fought well at times, however several mistakes lead to Red’s 3 goals. Our marking at the back was lacking and we found ourselves continually under pressure, allowing the opposition ball carriers to hit targets up front far too regularly. It’s time to stop making excuses, if we are to compete in finals it is time to turn this season around. Close enough is not good enough and as a team we can no longer accept less than victory. A winning culture is what we are trying to create and it is up to every member of the team to live by this. Mens Premier Alliance vs Aquinas No report Ladies Willow Bridge League vs Rockingham (Won 1 - 0) Best: S. Bowyer, C. Surman, A. Clark Goals: E. Hall Well done for the 1-0 victory against Rockingham. Preparation for a match is equally important as playing a match. Today's preparation was not to my expectation. There was a lack of focus and seriousness and that has effected our first 35 minutes of hockey. The second half was the standard I expected from players. Effort, discipline and commitment. We want to be a consistent team making our way into Premier League. A good team plays consistent hockey at all times. This is what we need to work on going into next week's game. PROVISIONAL LEAGUE Mens Provisional 1 vs Whitfords (Lost 1 - 3) Best: M. Jensen, L. Woodward, C. Morrison Goals: M. Jensen I think we are all pretty disappointed with this result. Our slow backline was exposed by some very quick and skillful opposition forwards. Some crucial turnovers in the middle continue to cost us. We may have been out-bodied and out-whacked but we need to keep our composure in these situations and not play to the oppositions lower standard. A little more protection from the umpire would have been nice, but that's no excuse.

Ladies Provisional 1 vs Whitfords (Drew 2 - 2) Best: H. Menegola, E. Woodberry, K. Atkinson Goals: K. Atkinson (2) A disappointing result against a team we should have beaten. An odd game saw us playing bad hockey in the first half to end up 1-0 at half time, then see us play great hockey in the second half and finish the game 2-2. If we play like we did in the second half throughout the rest of the season, with the same desperation and work rate, we will easily be a top 2 side. Thanks to Kylie for filling in. Ladies Provisional 2 Gold vs YMCC (Drew 0 - 0) Best: S. Wilson, J. Hadley, C. Hadley/S. King Good strong game against an experienced team. Unlucky not to convert the scoring opportunities we had, but with more attendance at training we should be able to put the finishing touches to ouor game. Thanks to the subs who filled in for us - well done. And happy birthday Denby - hope you had a great day! Ladies Provisional 3 Gold vs OGMHC (Lost 0 - 3) Best: A. Sperinck, W. Joyce, A. McCall Welcome back to Ash our goal keeper extraordinaire (Boy! Did we have some work for you tonight) We had a great game tonight. As a group, it is pleasing to see we are improving. We still very hard to put any pressure on when we are playing in the attacking half, but we had a couple of chances this game. So with a bit of luck our first goal isn't too far away.

METROPOLITAN LEAGUE Mens Metro 1 vs OGMHC (Won 5 - 0) Best: M. Lyons, J. Pickering, J. Cooke Goals: M. Deveson (2), M. Lyons (2), M. Read Melville v Guildford - Like a bad TV Sitcom Reunion where everyone was older, uglier and everyone had lost a bit of what it was that got them to the top in the first place. Many a 1B’s tussle was fought over the years against these guys, and well the 5-0 win was a just retribution for the GF defeat of a few years ago (not really but it’s worth a shot). Game started fairly slowly, and to be fair only got the slower as the game progressed - Melville created most of the opportunities, but Guildford were a posing a threat on the counter. Once we had a couple on the board there was no going coming back and a purple patch in the second half saw 3 more goals in quick succession and meant the circle of retribution was now complete. Nice doubles for Clarrie and Junior (who still thinks he is a forward) and a single to Matty – just don’t ask him how he got it, as he couldn’t remember scoring post game. Slug was around the place, but lacked penetration. Finally big thanks to Cridds and Stef for whistling.

Ladies Metro 1 vs NC Raiders (Won 2 - 1) Best: J. Coad, C. Caydamar, M. Glover Goals: M. Glover (2) The first half saw NC Raiders take the early lead of 1-0. Position changes made at half time saw Melville pushing forward with many more scoring opportunities resulting in 2 goals scored by Mhairdi Glover. Mens Metro 2 Gold vs OGMHC (Lost 0 - 1) Best: D. Montgomery, D. Pickering, N. Ferguson Dissapointing loss again just didnt put away our chances in the second half. Mens Metro 3 Black vs Vic Park (Lost 0 - 6) No report

Mens Metro 3 Gold vs WASPS (Lost 0 - 3) 2010-05-22 Best: D. Walker, M. Willis, R. Francis A disappointing loss. When the ball was fed through we had some good opportunities which we just couldn't turn into goals. A special thanks to "Darren" for giving us a hand this weekend and we also say bye to Chris who, after telling the ump's missus she was as ugly as the umpiring was, has decided to take a job up in Karratha. Good luck Chris!!! Mens Metro 3 Gold vs CT Pirates No report

VETERANS Ladies Rae Blunt Pennant vs Hale (Drew 1 - 1) Best: L. Anderson, A. Wheatley, N. Johnson What a night, not quite black eyed peas stuff but definitely something in the air. We welcomed several newbies Nat replacing Kylie this week after the latter pulled something getting too much practice the previous week, Alison and Gillian. All very welcome too as we played second place Hale. Melville started well belying our league position, pressured the ball carrier, retained possession and moved forwards with purpose.. for once we did not look out of our league! A short corner resulted in ball slipping to Deliah who finished well from the edge of the circle, we were in front for the first time this season. Team continued to play and pressure ball carrier and it was an even game until a short corner when Jonesy took one in the face on the post from a wayward shot. Omitting the crime scene stuff but there was a lot of blood on the turf and an ambulance was called once we got the car blocking the gate moved. After a 25 minute delay we took half time and then played a 40min second half. Nic come on from the 2's at full back and never looked out of place, we continued to play after the break but Hale gradually upped the pace as we tired. Nat made some outstanding saves from corners, and one on one;s but Hale levelled with 10 to go with a two on one at the edge of the circle. The last 5 were a blur but we hung on for a draw that felt like a win. Jonsey has a badly busted nose we hope no worse pending further scans, it was a good week otherwise for everyone and shows we can be competitive with the right team. Special mention to Lisa playing out of position at left half but stepping up each week and Alison Wheatley who is now getting the pace of the game and contributing to team effort. Ladies Veterans Div 2 vs Hale (Lost 0 - 3) It was either the accident in the game prior that required an ambulance on the turf or that we were playing the same club but it seemed that we were somewhat slow to start but once we did get going we played a strong first half with Maris dominating the play in the centre. The backs put up a strong defence and only let in one goal in the first half with Lindy keeping many goals out. Unfortunately we ran out of steam in the second half and lost Leanne to a torn calf. However when we had the passing going it went well. Our best wishes go to Caroline Jones on a speedy recovery.

Mens Midweek Vets vs CT Pirates (Won 2 - 1) Best: M. Watton, J. Cooke, M. Starling Goals: M. Jensen, M. Watton A fine return to form - aided and abetted by Jenno's plan to nullify team's weakness in goal (vis., Crowey) by preventing opposition entering the D. It proved to be remarkably effective this game, with Crowey given few options to stuff up ... to everybody's relief. Huzzah! Mens Over 40 Division 2 vs Hale (Lost 1 - 2) Best: R. Achemedei/R. Thorn/G. Ross/D. Ross/G. Ranford/J. Moncrieff/W. Harries/A. Etelaaho/K. Dempster/D. Beckwith/R. Thurtle Goals: D. Beckwith Very unlucky to have lost, an outstanding team effort - even Crowey managed to lift his game ... so much so, that one spectator (it is alleged) actually mistook Crowey for a legitimate keeper! His Brownlow odds have now dramatically shortened to 999:1. Mens Over 40 Division 4 vs Rockingham (Lost 0 - 1) Best: M. Knuiman, E. Nell, B. Gibbins A fair and hard run game. We created lots of chances but didn't convert. Rocky scored off a corner. We got a stick to it but it spun off into the goal. Matthew, Eric and Brett had excellent games. Mens Over 50 Division 1 vs CT Pirates (Won 6 - 0) Best: R. Chesny, P. Matthews, G. Woollacott/K. Harper Goals: R. Chesny (3), G. Hunt, A. Reynolds, K. Harper What a great win for our boys playing away at Pirates' Grounds in the warm winter sun. A very determined side was our forwards and mid fielders who linked up like a goal scoring machine. We had some great passages of play that set up many shots at goal. Their keeper did a great job keeping us to just six. A week’s rest for the General Bye then back into it. Team morale in this team is unbelievable. A great win to celebrate Keith Harper's 600th game. Well done boys and welcome Robert Herriman to the Melville 50 Div 1 Side. Mens Over 50 Division 2 vs Mods No report

13

Mens Over 60 vs Suburban (Lost 2 - 3) Best: J. Smith, P. Oudejans/C. Willis, R. Domingo/R. Bailey Goals: R. Domingo, M. Goodman A tough game against the top side. We assigned some players certain tasks and for most of the time it worked. Subs are a very skillful team however we matched them for most of the game. I am sure with a full and fit team we could beat them. The upcoming 2 week break should give our injured players time to recover. A good team effort all over the field. JUNIORS Boys 11/12A vs WASPS (Lost 3 - 4) Best: Jordan, Tom, JC Goals: N. Tate (2), J. Paz A great start by the boys to be one up early in the game due to some strong mid field play and finishing by the forwards. The second half saw Melville in control of the game for long periods but couldn't put the score on the board. Keep working on the short corners and the goals will come. A tough game against good opposition.

Mens Over 50 Division 3 vs SUBS (Won 5 - 0) Best: L. Welten, R. Nottage, T. Jobson Goals: L. Welten (2), T. Jobson, D. Porter, R. Wood Fantastic first half, goals were a plenty, well done. The second half was a little scare, but good tries??? Most of the game it was kept in check, a few wild moments when the round ballie thing and the woooden stick were not to meet. A good game by all.

Parents/Managers: Any photos you take of your team would be much appreciated by the club, both for our website and for the end of year book. Please send them to me (email [email protected]) - arrangements can be made for larger file transfers as well. Brad Wake Maroon Zone editor 2010.

Girls 11/12A Maroon vs Vic Park (Lost 2 - 4) Best: S. Bowyer, B. Clark, K. Passmore Goals: R. Phipps, M. Silvey The girls played really well against a farly tough opposition. A couple of soft goals to Vic Park in the last 15 minutes were just unlucky. Look forward to next week! Girls 11/12A Reserve White vs WASPS (Drew 2 - 2) Best: B. Coleman, S. Joyce, N. Massey Goals: R. Latham, S. Rushton We played a good attacking game in the first half, had the majority of the play, but again couldn't convert. We still need to practice our passes which let us down in the second half. On the whole a good game girls. Thanks to Graeme for coaching us and Caitlin Toogood for filling in for us. Just because it is raining doesn’t mean there is no training, this is a Winter sport after all! Boys 11/12B Black vs WASPS (Won 1 - 0) Best: G. Baxter, C. Ashby, M. Shepherd Goals: M. Shepherd A great game. Melville played like they wanted to win, and they succeeded. Well done. A lot of good work on the forward line with several attempts at goals. Mark finally succeeding to score in the last half. Strong work in defence to stop the WASPS from scoring. Girls 11/12B vs Rangers (Lost 1 - 3) Best: S. Bailey, E. Duffield, H. Gibson/C. Toogood With a gentle Irish lilt - "We played our best in the second half of the first half and in the first half of the second half. We only played half our best in the first half of the first half and in the second half of the second half". Sondren scored early to put us 1 up with brilliant goalie work by Emily in deflecting everything coming her way. Janezza came alive in rescuing the short corners. Hannah & Caitlin worked tirelessly but we stayed defensive with Tori in fullback putting her body on the line left trying to dig up our expensive turf with her arms and knees - ouch! The turf won that

17

argument. We play this opposition again - next time the win will be ours or alternatively ours to win.... Boys 9/10A vs YM Lions (Won 5 - 2) Best: R. Vickery, C. Hunt, J. Coleman Goals: B. De Bes, S. Gibbins, F. Hay, C. Hunt, R. Vickery Very well played this week. We worked the ball well to structure an attack which resulted in 5 goals. We do however need to appreciate that once we make a turnover, consider attacking through the opposite side to which the turnover was made. It is all about a numbers game. We also need to keep possession of the ball under pressure. Sometimes we force the turnover, and then simply give the ball back to the opposition. This is unacceptable. Let's keep working on our team play and using fast early passes. Girls 9/10A vs YM Lions (Drew 2 - 2) Best: A. Clark, A. McNess, K. Rule Goals: R. Clay, A. McNess A great game of hockey to watch with some good strong play by both sides. When we worked as a team and passed the ball we looked a million dollars. We probably had more opportunities to score and a bit more composure will help us to take those opportunities. Girls 9/10A Reserve Gold vs Fremantle (Drew 0 - 0) Best: S. Matthews, S. Gerrard, C. Lawther Yet another close game! The team came out much stronger in the second half - there was better communication between the players, passing was better and they were hungrier for the ball! Cara and Ee-Faye where solid in defense ably supported by Emily in goals who made some crucial saves. The girls should focus on being stronger on the ball, falling back to help the defenders and running with their sticks down. A big thank you to Emily, Cara and Ali for playing on the day. Boys 9/10B Gold vs OGMHC (Drew 1 - 1) Best: J. Clements, R. Ayris/L. Hobley/A. Metcalfe, A. Hackett/J. Munns Goals: J. Munns A good effort from the entire team and we were unfortunate not to come away with the win. We attacked well down the right today but did not

18

finish off and reward ourselves with more goals. Our cover defence is getting better and we did not concede a field goal for the first time this year. Boys 9/10B Gold White vs WASPS (Won 3 - 1) Best: C. Miller, S. Lee, A. Hudson Goals: B. Gauci, C. McHugh, C. Miller We started the game slow but we were still able to put the first goal on the board but WASPS equalised 5 minutes later. After that our midfield started working well together and more opportunities rose. After a few oranges at half time, the dominance of the midfield put the WASPS defence under extreme pressure. We were penetrating the D time and time again but were unable to finish. We finished the game solid with two more goals. Good game boys keep up the good work. Girls 9/10C vs Joondalup Lakers (Won 5 - 0) Unfortunately our opposition didn't turn up for the game, but to the girl's credit they played a great scratch match between themselves. We saw some excellent passing shots and great scoring. Well done girls, and it looked as though you were having plenty of fun. Enjoy the long weekend and come back ready for some great hockey. Welcome back to Avril who has been sidelined due to injury. :) Boys 7/8A vs Whitford (Won 3 - 2) Best: T. Mansfield, C. Joynes, C. Thompson Goals: C. Thompson (3) The boys had a great win and it was a fantastic team effort with all players contributing. There were many highlights, firstly Conor Thompson who has worked hard all year presenting himself on the wing was able to get the benefits of his work with 3 magnificent goals. At the other end of the field our Goalie Matt Stidolph played a really great game stopping many attacks. Thomas Mansfield played his best game for the season, defending and attacking.Callum Joynes followed up on his game from the previous week with a great game presenting well in the forward line. I could go on mentioning every player as everyone played their role. Well done!!! More wins to come.

19

Girls 7/8A vs WASPS (Won 9 - 0) Best: R. Harrup, S. Somerville/A. Watson, N. Clay/I. Nelson Goals: R. Harrup (5), B. Anderson, L. Lefroy, I. Nelson, A. Watson Well the same number of goals was scored as last week, but they were all ours!! Well done girls a great victory. As the coach pointed out it was very difficult to pick best players this week as it can only be described as a whole of team effort, but with 5 wonderful goals Rachel clinched it. Credit also has to be given to the full backs - while they may not have had much work to do they were on the ball when it crossed into our half, allowing our halves and forwards to keep up the relentless pressure on the WASP's defence. We also managed to carry the ball wide. Give yourselves a pat on the back, a well deserved victory. Boys 7/8A Reserve vs YM Lions (Lost 1 - 2) Best: N. Camer Pesci, M. Cocliff, S. Robertson Goals: N. Ireland Excitement both on and off the field this week. Lets talk about the game first - the boys absolutely did their best this week with some great hockey displayed. Each and every player fought hard battles and challeged the opposition all the way down the pitch. Much more talking this week by the boys which was great to hear. The boys were asked to play man on man this week which worked well and the boys that saw a great deal of the ball did so because they put pressure on the opposition. Now for off the field which was the cause of much excitement. Just as the boys were resting at half time they were interrupted by a flurry of cockroaches - their drain was intruded by water and out they came in their thousands (maybe hundreds)Great hockey practice for the boys and the parents watching continued the cockroach jig throughout the second half. They are tenacious characters - not surprising that they are survivors! Girls 7/8A Reserve vs Hale Best: M. Brown, S. Tantry, A. McKenzie Even though we did not win this weekend's match, it was the most encouraging so far. Our second half was the best we have played all year. Melanie was stoic in defence, Sushmita made excellent position at right wing and Alex created wonderful space. We have excellent players, now to work on our excellent team!

20

Boys 7/8B Black vs YM Lions (Lost 0 - 4) Best: J. Brooker, A. Kelly, H. Ollier Again our best half was the first, with strong defensive work from Justin, Nick, Lewis (in goals) and Cameron. The forward line worked hard with great efforts from Adam, Dean, Harrison and Liam. The second half like last week witnessed the team strucure fall away, with too many easy balls into attack from the opposition. Individually you all continue to improve with a great effort from Ben in half back and I`m sure we will break through and score goals very soon. Our thanks goes to Coach Brad Potter with replacements Kyle, trent and Nick this was a huge help for our team. Girls 7/8B Black vs Willetton Reds (Won 2 - 0) Best: R. Dymond, B. Lawrence, E. Girling Goals: E. Girling (2) Top played bottom but ladder positions meant nothing (a good lesson there) as our girls were really tested for the entire game. After a scratchy first half we played with more cohesion and purpose during the second. Our shorts need work but the girls are playing brilliantly to set up short corners and scoring shots in open play. The girls play their role and play for each other and all are passing the ball (wide!!) and many of the girls now use the 'push' to perfection. Never a dull moment and mums and dads (and grandparents) providing plenty of positive noise. We do have room for improvement but it's a pleasure to coach em! Boys 7/8C vs Mazenod (Won 6 - 1) Best: Whole team effort Goals: L. Jones (2), S. Reid (2), J. Harris, D. Smith-Colombini A great game for the whole team. We attacked well and ended up with having 6 goals. Our defence was also at its best, keeping Mazenod to only 1 point for the whole game. This week we welcomed two new players to our team... Crawford and Meshal. We are very pleased to have you join the team Boys 5/6A vs UWA(Blue) (Won 3 - 1) Goals: N. Page (2), K. Potter

21

This was another great game by all the boys, who continue to improve each week. As we come together as a team and learn to support each other we get better and better. Keep up the good work and continue to work hard on your skills at training, as these are really starting to show through in the games. Girls 5/6A vs Vic Park No report Boys 5/6B Black vs UWA Orange No report. Girls 5/6B Gold vs UWA Yellow (Drew 3 - 3) Best: A. Stroobach, M. Bedford, C. Sader, I. Argvijo, P. Brickhill Goals: A. Stroobach (2), P. Brickhill A great game played by the girls. Well Done. The team played really well together, assisting each other both to defend and attack with succesfully scoring 3 goals. Defence had played well with many scoring opportunities stopped by great team work. The girls kept the pressure on the entire game even with no subs all had put in a fantastic effort. Great game team well done. Boys 5/6 South Grey vs Aquinas Willetton (Won 5 - 0) Best: W. Reynolds/S. McKinnon, D. Paino, L. Berry Goals: S. McKinnon (3), M. Tate, W. Reynolds In a dominant team performance, it was once again a raffle for best players. William was outstanding on the wing, Sam McKinnon very strong and finished off for three goals, Daniel was strong in defense and disposed the ball wide, with great backup from Lewis Berry. Sam Snowden had a week off from goalie and showed good touch with the stick, Regan was lively even after a hard hit to the cheek, Mitch was commanding and also scored, Sam Cocks gave beautiful passes to the wing, Jack and Reilly had important touches. Thanks to Daan who filled in when we were short of players at the start. Well done to Jordan who played in the goals, even though it was a bit quiet at that end. There are still areas for improvement which will be covered at training. Good team win.

Boys 5/6 South Maroon vs Willetton Reds No report Boys 5/6 South White vs Fremantle (Won 3 - 0) Best: S. Skepper, M. Munro, T. Jameson Goals: T. Dickson (3) Wow what a game! The boys 5/6 White team had a well deserved win (3-0) against an older, more experienced Fremantle team. Tim scored all of the goals, one being from the top of the D. Tyler captained the team from the goal, working well with backs, Sam and Oliver. They defended several short corners and didn’t give Fremantle the opportunity to score. Matt Munro had a good game at centre half, controlling the mid field. Girls 5/6 South Maroon vs Willeton Reds (Won 3 - 0) Best: M. Hagen, J. Vanderzwan, L. Anderson Goals: M. Hagen, B. Martin, J. Vanderzwan Today’s report is a difficult one to write as we are starting to gel as a team and as such there were no obvious standouts. The hard work at training and eagerness to learn about their positions has shown this week with the girls holding their positions better and passing rather than hitting on and hoping someone from our team will get it. There were some lovely running breaks with the girls working as a team, and when they came across an opposition player passing the ball off to a fellow team mate. Poppy found her confidence this week and ran the ball down the wing several times on her own, which was fantastic to see. Ella who returned after her two week break slotted right back into her role as fullback as though she hadn’t been away but we will need to work on strengthening those passes. Lauren played a fantastic game as halfback, putting pressure on the opposition constantly and pushing the ball forward to aid her teams attack. Kate is beginning to understand that as a wing when in attack the best position is on the goal post but we will need to practice our square passes. Commendations must go to Willetton and their goalie, they fought back hard in the second half to keep our girls scoreless despite the many attempts, it was a great game to watch and I am sure your parents were very proud.

Girls 5/6 South White vs Modernians (Lost 0 - 1) Best: G. Clavey, K. Dumas, N. Yuen What a turn-around from last week’s first half. The whole game was played wide, with commitment from our players and we showed that we wanted the ball more than they did. This week the girls passed well and chased the ball down whether in attack or defense. Thanks to Bailey who did well in goals and worked well with the defense to keep out some congested attacking. After the game I said it was too hard to pick best players as the whole team deserved it this week, and you could see it on their smiles as they came off the pitch. In the end the awards went to Grace for her work rate, Katherine for persistently coming back from the forward line and Naomi for a huge improvement in commitment. A big thank you to Poppy and Molly who filled in for us, with both playing really well.
