LFJune 2010 | THE CROSSINGS AT CARLSBAD
Jeff Perry General Manager
If you have been following this column and the golf fitness series over the past few months you probably are beginning to understand the importance of golf fitness
for performance and injury prevention. I have partnered up with Dr. Mike Wasilisin of the Titleist Elite Performance Institute located at PureFitness in Carlsbad to solicit some of his expertise on helpful tips that can be beneficial to the golf swing which may also transition to a healthier everyday lifestyle. Again, the goal of these pieces is to simply point out that there are many simple and easy ways to improve your golf game; with the added benefit of improving your overall physical fitness.
Recapping where we left off in March & April, we discussed some key exercises to increase your rotation in your middle back, which equals more power; and balance, which helps with ball striking consistency. As we start to ‘unwind’ the golf swing from the core building blocks to the actual movement of the club, I will start to target the muscle groups behind the proper mechanisms of golf swing. In this column I will address the importance of rotation; specifically, hip rotation.
A tour professional will rotate his shoulders 90 degrees from the starting position (basically putting the shoulder under the chin). Although the shoulders are rotating, less than 5% of this motion actually comes from the shoulders. Hip rotation accounts for about half of the rotation in the golf swing and the middle back making up the other half. The equation is: the more you can turn and coil against a solid and stable lower body foundation, the more power you can generate.
Maximizing hip joint rotation will not only create a more powerful and repeatable golf swing, but will also help prevent hip arthritis and other common hip problems. If you can imagine you are set up at address and begin your backswing, one of your hips will rotate inward and the other outward until you reach the top of your backswing, then that order will reverse as you finish your follow through. Therefore, it is important to work each hip in both directions.
MANAGER’S MESSAGE
To increase hip rotation, you need to incorporate one exercise to improve the outward rotation and one to increase the inward rotation. Immediately after performing both of these exercises assume your 5 iron posture and begin taking your body through the motion of the swing and feel the increased motion coming from your hips.
1) Butterfly Stretch:
Begin this drill by sitting down and bringing both feet together out in front of you. Grab ankles and try to place the soles of both feet together. Allow both knees to fall gently to the floor. While doing so, bend slowly forward from the hips with an erect spine angle. This will allow for a stretch of the hips and groin. The closer your feet are to the crotch of your pants, the greater the stretch will feel. Always perform stretches in a slow and controlled manner. Hold for 15 seconds and relax for 10 seconds. Repeat this cycle 10 times.
2) Hip Windshield Wipers:
Start by lying on your back with your knees and hips bent to 90 degrees. Make fists with both hands and place them together between your knees. Now, without separating your hands and knees, try to move your feet as far apart as possible (like windshield wipers). Repeat this motion back and forth for up to 5 minutes per day.
If you missed any of these articles and would like to review their contents and the exercises recommended to build the muscles already discussed, they can be found in our past issues of The Currents online at www.TheCrossingsatCarlsbad.com.

ask mImIWe are hosting a small meeting for some of our Corporate Executives over the course of three days. I wanted to incorporate a fun team building activity at the end of the third day before dinner. I was thinking something that would not only encourage teamwork and interaction, but will also be fun and different. Any suggestions? Thanks! Dawn
hi Dawn, Thank you for your question!
since the meeting is for your Corporate Executives, consider offering food and beverage team building activities. These have become more popular in the last few years, since it’s a nice break from the meeting and encourages further education on a subject that most people would like to learn more about.
There are some really great vendors out there that offer Wine Tasting Team building activities. Usually, the group is formed into individual teams and are quizzed on what they have tasted, seen on the label, etc. The same concept can apply to beer, vodka, etc. because it’s usually a more intimate setting, your guests will not only be encouraged to work together, but will also feel more comfortable asking questions and learning more about the industry.
This similar idea can be applied to all your groups though… If you are doing department meetings, consider having food and wine pairing competitions, hands on cooking classes, culinary competitions, etc. after all, who doesn’t love great food and beverages?

from ThE CorNEr of ThE bar Piña Colada
The Piña Colada [spanish, strained pineapple: piña, pineapple + colada, strained] was introduced on august 16, 1954 at the Caribe hilton’s beachcomber bar in san Juan, Puerto rico by its alleged creator, ramon “monchito” marrero.
apparently, the hotel management had expressly requested monchito to mix a new signature drink that would delight the demanding palates of its star-studded clientele. monchito accepted the challenge, and after 3 intense months of blending, shaking and experimenting, the first Piña Colada was born.
This story is more credible because the Piña Colada contains cream of coconut as one of the primary ingredients, and the cream of coconut “Coco lópez” (which is the pioneer) was invented in 1954 in the University of Puerto rico by ramón lópez Irizarry.
