    LAYOFFS

Fairview HealthFairview Health Services is cutting 240 individuals in response to

operating losses in its first quarter and the uncertainty surroundingMinnesotas state healthcare funding. Only 70 positions are being

considered layoffs, while the remaining positions are being left open

after retirement and normal attrition. These cuts total about one

percent of the twenty-one thousand person staff and includeadministrative and patient care jobs.

    Minneapolis-St.Paul Business Journal

Petoskeys HospitalPetoskeys Northern Michigan Regional Hospital is laying off about 50

workers because of the growing number of uninsured and lesschoosing elective surgeries. These cuts come after 65 layoffs declared

last fall in the mental health and newborn care departments.Interlochen Public Radio

    Genesis Medical Center

Due to fewer patients, Genesis Medical Center in Iowa is making jobcuts by consolidating management positions and eliminating about 25other jobs. These employees, however, are likely to be reassigned to

one of the 125 open positions currently available.KWQC.com

    IU Health LaPorte Hospital

More than 100 employees were laid off at the IU Health LaPorteHospital, which employs around seventeen hundred people, as part of

a cost-savings measure. The cuts were a direct effect of the risingcost of healthcare and number of uninsured unable to pay for

    treatment.

    Medicaid

In North Texas, a 10 percent rate reduction in Medicaid paymentscould cause around 5,100 jobs to be lost. The Dallas-Fort Worth

Hospital Council expressed its concerns with the level of state funding

for Medicaid; sales tax revenue will decrease more than five milliondollars with this reduction. The hospitals are working together to

minimize the effect on patient care.Dallas Business Journal

    Cornell Scott Hill Health Center

Thirty workers of the 526-member staff at the 16 community healthcenters of Cornell Scott Hill Health were laid off due to efforts to keepthe organization as financially strong as possible after forty-threeyears. The jobs lost were mostly administrative positions and medical

assistants. Although Hill Health no longer has needs for these medical

    and doctors.New Haven Independent

Logansport MemorialAccording to the President and CEO, the hospital will reduce its staffsize by an equivalent of 13.5 full-time employees. This will reduce

spending to help even out the decline in reimbursement from Medicaidand Medicare. The layoffs are scheduled to be completed by August 1.
