GrEEn tECh 2012We are pleased to announce that the fifth edition of the Green Tech conference will take place in Que-bec City, next May. The certification ceremony also provided an op-portunity to unveil Green Marine’s performance in 2010 and share the results posted by participant companies. Those results show that the global average attained by Green Marine participants continued on its upward trend in 2010, rising from 2.0 in 2008 to 2.5 in 2009 to 2.9 in 2010. In order

to ensure that these yearly comparisons are as meaningful as possible, new participants were excluded from the main averages for 2010. Their numbers will, however, serve as a baseline for measuring the overall progress attained by parti-cipants from 2010 to 2011.

Green Marine is pleased to welcome two new participants:

The Port of Saint John is the largest and most diverse seaport in the Province of New Brunswick. It serves as a marine gateway to global markets and is among Canada’s leading ports, known for its strategic importance to the country’s trade and economy. Last year, the Port of Saint John broke all of its previous ton-nage records by handling more than 30.4 million metric tonnes of cargo. This international seaport is also part of the region’s core infrastructure, generating nearly 3,000 direct and indirect jobs.

Valleytank Inc. provides a com-prehensive service that specia-

lizes in the handling and storage of a wide range of bulk liquids. Located 35 miles west of Montreal in the Port of Valleyfield (on the St. Lawrence Seaway), Valleytank is accessible by ship, barge, rail and truck, and has 34 tanks with a total capacity of 36,000 cubic metres. Serving custo-mers in Montreal, Ontario and the eastern U.S., Valleytank is owned by Increased Oil Recovery, one of the Larsen family of companies based in Bergen, Norway.

Green Marine is pleased to welcome the City of Montreal, the City of Varennes and the Marguerite-D’Youville MRC as its newest supporters.

As Quebec’s largest city, and boasting nearly 1.7 mil-lion inhabitants, Montreal recently joined several of its fellow members of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative by becoming an official supporter of the Green Marine program. Montreal’s transportation and warehousing sector, which includes the activities gene-rated by the Montreal Port Authority, represents more than 43,000 jobs for the city. Environmental concerns moved to the forefront of Montreal’s agenda last year, when the city published a five-year sustainable deve-lopment plan.

The City of Varennes endorsed a resolution to support Green Marine’s environ-mental program this past May. Varennes is located 15 minutes from downtown Montréal and 45 minutes from the U.S. border. Among the factors contributing to the city’s unique strategic position are its proximity to the St. Lawrence River, its vast territory (comprising 94 square kilometres) and its millions of square feet of available land.

The Marguerite-D’Youville MRC, which includes the City of Varennes, also became a supporter of Green Marine this past May. The MRC’s ter-ritory extends 347.5 square kilometres and encompasses a population is more than 71,000.

GrEEn MarinE is a Finalist at thE sustainablE shiPPinG aWards

For the second year in a row, Green Marine has been nominated for the “Green Shipping Initiative of the Year” award at the Sustainable Shipping Awards, joining six other nominees who are also finalists in this category. The Sustainable Shipping Awards present prizes in eight different catego-ries, all of which highlight and reward excellence in environmental initiatives undertaken by marine industry stakeholders throughout the world. The

winners will be announced at a ceremony to be held in London, England on July 7. Over 150 maritime industry experts from more than twenty countries will be present on this occasion to cele-brate those companies and individuals who have made the greatest strides in improving the ship-ping sector’s environmental legacy.

your CatiE aWards! We encourage Green Marine members to promote their own environmental achievements and sus-tainability efforts by applying for a CATIE Award. These awards were developed by I.E. Canada as a means of celebrating Canada’s trade accomplishments by recognizing the companies and individuals who demonstrate trade excellence and make a positive contribution in the realm of customs and com-pliance. Although there are four different CATIE Awards, the one that would be a perfect fit for many Green Marine members is the Greening of the Supply Chain Award. This award recognizes a Canadian company that has initiated, implemented and demonstrated a corporate commitment to greening the supply chain and reducing its carbon footprint. I.E.Canada will be accepting nominations for the CATIE Awards until July 15th, and details and nomination forms can be found on-line. The gala reception and awards dinner will be held in Toronto, in October.
