The Birthday SongHappy birthday to Mildred J. Hill,

composer of the “Happy Birthday”melody. The Louisville, Ky.,schoolteacher was born on June 27,1859. Hill’s sister, Patty Smith Hill, also a teacher, penned the lyrics, which were first published in 1893 asthe classroom greeting “Good Morningto All.” Now the birthday version of thesong is sung somewhere in the worldevery minute of every day in manylanguages. Here are some festivefacts about the celebratory song:

Birth of “Birthday.” The transition of“Good Morning to All” to “HappyBirthday” is murky, but the “HappyBirthday to You” lyrics first appearedin print in a 1924 songbook. Radioand movies propelled the song’spopularity as a birthday celebrationstaple.

Musical missive. “Happy Birthday”was the message of Western Union’sfirst singing telegram. On July 28,1933, operator Lucille Lipps croonedthe tune to wish Rudy Vallee ahappy 32nd.

Copyright concerns. Jessica Hill,Mildred and Patty’s sister, demonstrated the similarities between“Happy Birthday” and “Good Morningto All” in court and secured thecopyright for her sisters in 1934—toolate for Mildred, who died in 1916.Under current laws, the copyrightprotection for the song will remain ineffect until at least 2030. This meansroyalties are due for publicperformances of the song, but beltingout the ditty at home among familyand friends is free.

Who Owns ‘Birthday’?It’s a common but untrue rumor

that Paul McCartney bought “HappyBirthday.” Summy-Birchard Musicowns “Happy Birthday,” whichreportedly brings in about $2 million inroyalties per year.

How to Do It NowSometimes putting off until

tomorrow what you could do todaydoes no harm. Other times you pay forit dearly—in late fees, fines andmissed opportunities. If your tendencyto tarry stands between you and yourdreams, it’s time to shove some toughlove at your inner lollygagger.

I might fail. It sounds corny, but “Ithink I can”—the mantra of the LittleEngine That Could—should be yourinternal chant, too. Self-confidence isa powerful motivator, and even smallsteps toward your goals get yourmomentum chugging.

I don’t have time. Do you have timeto play video games or watch TV?Devote some of those hours tomaking meaningful, lasting changes inyour life.

I’ve lost interest. There’s a reasonyou bought that fitness video—youwanted to get into better shape. Put

yourself into the mindset you were inwhen you made the purchase.Visualize yourself working out. Createmotivational cues such as laying outexercise clothes where you’llsee them.

I’m too busy. “StillProcrastinating?” author Joseph R.Ferrari stresses the importance ofkeeping a to-do list. Seeing your goalsin writing encourages you to setpriorities, cross off what you’vecompleted and even schedule time towork on achieving your dreams.

Guidance for Green ShoppingEnvironmentally conscious

consumers seek out Earth-friendlymerchandise. But green credentialsfor products have been falling into agray area. The Federal TradeCommission recently updated itsGreen Guides, advising companiesthat they will need “competent andreliable scientific evidence” to back uptheir environmental claims. Theguidelines also caution against vagueterms such as “eco-friendly.”

From GreenLivingTips.com, hereare some pointers to keep in mind:

Look beyond packaging. A boxmade of 100 percent recycled

cardboard might hold anenvironmentally harmful product.Conversely, an Earth-friendly itemcould be encased in excessive layersof plastic.

Don’t be blinded by good works.Just because a company contributesmoney to an environmental causedoesn’t necessarily mean its productsare good for the planet. The samegoes for companies that sponsorevents.

Beware of buzzwords. Terms suchas “natural,” “organic” and“low-impact” sound good, but thinkabout what they really mean in thecontext of the merchandise theydescribe. Many harmful productstechnically are “natural.”

Check certifications. Third-partycertifications make products lookimpressive, but who’s making theendorsement? Do some researchbefore you deem the product green.

Dream ThemesLast night while you were sleeping,

did you go back to school and take anexam you hadn’t studied for? Or didyou, perhaps, look in a mirror andwince at some missing teeth? If so,you were far from alone. Whileeveryone’s dreams are unique, manymental health professionals agree thatcertain universal themes are symbolic.

Falling. Perhaps the most commondream theme, falling connotes afeeling of insecurity or loss of control.

Flying. Soaring through the airexpresses confidence and control ofone’s circumstances.

Being chased. Running away fromsomeone in a dream may denote areal-life avoidance of confrontation.

Running but going nowhere. Thedreamer might be overwhelmed withobligations.

Returning to school. Dreams ofbeing unprepared for a test mayreflect stress and pressure in thedreamer’s work life.

Losing teeth. Some dream analystscompare teeth to words. Feeling upsetin a dream because teeth are fallingout could represent regret over wordssaid in waking life. Other experts sayteeth symbolize power in dreams, because we use them for eating andexpression. Losing teeth gives youless “bite.”

Being undressed in public. If thisembarrasses the dreamer, it mightportray a real-life sense of hidingsomething or lack of preparation.
