More Musings from the Pastoral Assistant …
Dear Friends,
Another little item I came across and thought I would share it with you!
Drinking from my Saucer
I never made a fortune And it’s probably too late now. But I don’t worry about that much, I’m happy anyhow. And as I go along life’s way, Reaping better than I sowed I’m drinking from my saucer, ‘Cause my cup has overflowed.
Haven’t got a lot of riches, At times the going’s tough; But loved ones all around me, Make me rich, quite rich enough, I thank God for all his blessings, And the mercies He’s bestowed. I’m drinking from my saucer, ‘Cause my cup has overflowed.
I remember times when things went wrong, My faith wore somewhat thin.
But all at once the dark clouds broke, And the sun peeped through again. So Lord, please help me not to gripe About tough rows I’ve hoed. I’m drinking from my saucer, ‘Causer my cup has overflowed. God give me strength and courage, When the way grows steep and rough. Should I ask for other blessings, I’m already blessed enough. And may I never be too busy, To thank Him for love on the road. I rejoice and will do so for ever ‘Cause my cup has overflowed. Love and Prayers, Leonard

Encore Opera Company The audience was in raptures at the afternoon performance of the opera company on the Sunday afternoon of the 28th April. Reminiscent of the international-acclaimed “The Sixteen”, this vocal ensemble acquitted itself well in a formidable presentation of classical items in Italian, German, French and English. An appreciative audience received the performance with a burst of sustained applause. The delighted people who came filled the church , the coloured silk banners and the stained glass windows added beautifully to the stage “props”. Thank you to Mrs Anne Robins for organizing the event, and do come again. Heather Pankhurst.

They perform and run workshops for a wide variety of audiences and at a wide variety of venues including theatres, schools, colleges, prisons, churches, cathedrals, festivals, conferences and outreach missions.

Adding up the costs of education According to Government data 8.5% of children live in poverty in South Lakeland. This is likely to get worse. 2.8 million households across the UK will be worse off by an average of £137 under the new Universal Credit benefit due in October. This comes on the back of rising utility and food costs, squeezing household budgets. One area of concern is the costs faced by parents in sending their children to school. Apart from school uniform and lunch money, there are costs for school trips, social activities, fundraising and so on, many of these activities are expensive, unexpected and carry social pressure to participate. It all adds up, placing a burden on stretched family budgets. Your local Cumbria Rural Citizens Advice Bureau has contacted all the schools in South Lakeland to ask them to join in a national campaign called ‘Adding Up’. We want School Governors to adopt 10 principles to help control the costs of attending school and help parents budget for activities. You can help us. Tell us how much it costs your household to send children to school. You don’t need to tell us your name or which school, we just want facts and figures so that we can encourage schools to join the campaign. Complete our online survey at www.cumbriaruralcab.org.uk and help us try to stop more children falling into poverty. Free, confidential advice and help is available from the Citizens Advice Bureau on any aspect of debt, benefits, housing, employment and any other problems. You can contact the Grange or Windermere office by phone or in person. Call 015395 33100 / 015394 46464. If you don't need us for advice, how about helping us by becoming a volunteer or making a donation? Not many people realise that we are a charity - see our website for details www.cumbriaruralcab.org.uk.

THE CHILDREN’S SOCIETY The network of house box holders nationally raises £2 million a year for The Children’s Society. This last year St. Mary’s Church members who have collecting boxes contributed £443 to the Society. ‘Applethwaite St. Mary’s’ name has featured in The Children’s Society’s books at least since 1981 when the Society’s current records were started. Originally, as The Church of England Children’s Society we are sure that Applethwaite St. Mary’s participated for many years before that. For several years Carole Hewitson has been your local coordinator for the box collection arrangement for the Society. However, with all the added responsibilities of husband, Ian, as Church Warden and Carole’s involvement in many other areas, my offer of help to count the box monies has resulted in the transfer of all the church work and link with the Children’s Society to new hands. St. Mary’s now is involved with several charities local/national and worldwide all with very worthy causes. Helping vulnerable children in today’s society, for many of us, however, will always be at the top of our list. Last year we added a few more new box holders to our Children’s Society group, but we all should be trying to increase our list of box holders further. It is just a case of feeding our spare coins in change week by week into the box, which we will collect each year to give to The Children’s Society. If you are able to join us and wish to support The Children’s Society please contact myself or my wife Lorraine (who also collects donations for the church flowers) and we will welcome you to the group and provide you with a Society collecting box. Both we, at the church and The Children’s Society, thank Carole for her work and time involved in undertaking this role in these past years. Fred Parker – please call 88067.

The Charity Fun Day
Carol and David would like to thank you all very much indeed for attending the Charity Fun Day which proved to be a huge success. Thank you to all the charity stall holders manning their stalls, to the entertainment groups who were absolutely brilliant in entertaining those attending the Day, and to all the volunteers who gave up their time in all capacities; and last but not least to the community that came along and gave their support, on what was a very, very damp day – thank you all so very much.
Saturday 18th May was Charity Fun Day at St. Mary's. There was plenty of activity and colour around the church. The multi tinted bus for youth was parked outside and there was a marquee in the grounds. Also there was the fire engine for the fireman to show the children the many hoses and equipment. Inside the church were many stalls showing the various charities in the town. The displays were educational and informative. The Community choir, the Scottish dancers and musicians, Zumba dancers kept the audience amused. There was a large tombola and hotdogs and hamburgers being served in a marquee, bringing an onion aroma. It was a good display of community activities. Heather would also express sincere thanks to Carol for the organisation of such a successful and enjoyable day. Heather Pankhurst
Confirmation Service of 2013 On Sunday 12th May, there were eight candidates for Confirmation at St. Mary’s Church. There was a good congregation from the two parishes and the retired Bishop, Right Reverend Alec Graham confirmed Pauline Orrell, Judith Todd, Julia Heyworth and Peter Lever and younger members Annabel, Olivia, Aragon and Isaac. The Bishop, who was the retired Bishop of Newcastle, gave a splendid sermon directing guidance and help to the newly confirmed. We welcome them all to the Communion services and a fulfilled life in the Christian Community. – Heather Pankhurst
