According to the American Cancer Society, the early detection of breast cancer saves
thousands of lives each year. One of the newest tools in this effort is 3-D mammography,
or tomosynthesis, which is now available at St. Luke’s Sugar Land Hospital.
3-D mammograms allow physicians to take images from
different angles, providing sharper, better quality
results and a reduction in “false positives.” The new technology is
recommended for women with dense breast tissue and allows
physicians to view images with pinpoint accuracy in order to
detect smaller tumors earlier.
See if a mammogram is the answer for you.

As I get older, time passes much more quickly. My Mawmaw always told me that old adage growing up when, as a child, it seemed like the school year was an eternity and literally decades would pass before Christmas came around. Now, as an adult, I get it. It seems like just yesterday it was January, and now, the kids are out of school, and it’s June.
Along with summer, June marks the seventh issue of absolutely! Brazos – just another example of how time flies when you are having fun. We are absolutely having the best time covering Brazos, and we sincerely appreciate all of the support we have been shown by readers, advertisers and the community as a whole. Thank you for embracing us as your community magazine. We are absolutely! loving Brazos!
Speaking of community, in this issue we focus on a true jewel in Fort Bend: The George Ranch. If you have children in Fort Bend schools, you have likely been on a field trip to the ranch. I can’t even count how many times my family and I have enjoyed activities at the George Ranch, and now, there’s a new immersive exhibit that combines nature and history providing a unique educational and enjoyable experience. The Heritage Trail opened in May, and this quarter of a million dollar project tells the story of how the early settlers had to adapt to their environment in order to survive. The trail winds along the banks of the Dry Creek, and the setting is both serene and thought-provoking. The Heritage Trail is a great way to spend time with the family, and on July 13th, the ranch is hosting its 25th Anniversary Celebration offering free admission to the public. Take some time this summer to visit the George Ranch; you won’t be disappointed.
Our High School Hot Shot this month is Patti Fennesy from Foster High School. Read about Patti’s achievements and her love of animals on page 14, and if you know someone who is High School Hot Shot material, let us know. We love shining the spotlight on our youth.
Happy Father’s Day to all of our dads, and Happy Summer because ready or not, summer is here! Hope to see you out and about in Brazos. I’ll be the one in the shade with a big hat and fan!
absolutely! yours,

I just had a parent call me that lives in the Kingdom Heights subdivision and had seen our ad in absolutely! Brazos. She was calling us to enroll her child for our Pre-K program for this next school year. She currently has her child in another center in Richmond, but wants to move.
Anyway, just wanted to let you know the advertising is working for us, and people are definitely reading the magazine.

The Heritage TrailWhat’s New at George Ranch?
The George Ranch Historical Park is already well-
known for the four generations of one family that
homesteaded the property over one hundred years. The
farm, the prairie home, as well as the ranch mansion
and complex have been visited for years by an adoring
public, but now there is something new – celebrating
the old – in store for the 70,000 visitors to the ranch
each year. At a cost of a quarter of a million dollars,
the newest edition to the ranch celebrates Fort Bend’s
heritage in a brand new way.

Looking for something fun and educational for the
kids to do this summer? Con-sider the Hands On History Summer Program activities at the George Ranch Histori-cal Park.
With different activities scheduled each week through-out the summer months, there are most certainly classes that will pique both you and your little one’s interest. Starting in the 1830s and culminating in the 1930s, the program offers pe-riod re-enactments of frontier life. Want to learn how to construct a real log cabin? Perhaps basket weaving is your hobby of choice? Maybe the art of hunting and trapping is more your style? Have you ever wondered how a real blacksmith did his work? There is something for everyone with the Hands On History Summer Programs at the George Ranch.
On July 13th, the ranch will host its 25th Anniversary Cel-ebration. The park will be open free to the public in full celebra-tion of the 25 years of being a part of the Fort Bend County com-munity. The day will be full of games, 25 cent food and drinks
and all the fun you can have in one day!
From June to August, at 7 pm on the first Tuesday of each month, the ranch will host a free series of lectures open to the public on a variety of different topics. Visit www.georgeranch.org for a full list of available activities and re-lated dates to help make your summer fun.
Summer Fun
at the George Ranch
O n May 4th, the George Ranch Historical Park unveiled a half-mile immersive exhibit
called The Heritage Trail. The trail runs along the banks of the Dry Creek in an area that previously had been off limits to all visitors. George Ranch His-torical Park Executive Director Can-dace Jones is quick to point out the new addition isn’t simply a nature trail. “This is both a nature and a history trail. By combining the two, it makes this a very unique experience. The pur-pose is to educate visitors to a very in-teresting and often ignored concept of our cultural heritage. We often some-what arrogantly announce that the pio-neers were responsible for taming and harnessing the land here upon their ar-rival in 1836. Nothing could be further from the truth.” Jones went on to state, “Anyone who understands Mother Na-ture knows it was clearly the other way around. The early settlers had to adapt their entire lifestyle to utilize the natu-ral resources of their new home or they simply would not survive. The mission of this trail is to explore and learn from this awareness.”
Approximately two years ago, Jones presented her vision to the George Foundation Trustees who were more than interested in creating this oppor-tunity for the county and its communi-ties. Once an expert trail designer was contracted to come in to assist in the de-sign of the project and see it through to fruition, the scope of the project really began to take shape. The George Trust-ees accepted the final proposal and the 18-month construction process was set to begin. When ground was finally bro-ken on the east bank of Dry Creek for The Heritage Trail, the employees re-ally became excited seeing their hard work and vision becoming a reality.
Austa Sue Kelley and Leslee Gupton offer a period re-enactment of a proper Victorian Tea to summer visitors.
Chef Nick Castelburg demonstrates open-air cooking to a crowd of onlookers during a Chuckwagon lunch.
The construction of The Heritage Trail took 18 months.

The Heritage Trail teaches visitors the correlation between the environment and
the history of the Texas frontier.
“There is nothing else like this trail anywhere else in the world,” stated Jones. “The natural resources are abundant here. This trail is as innova-tive and as educational as they come.”
Jones was very pleased with the decision by the George Foundation to move forward and commit to bringing this trail to reality, something that was simply impossible to ignore during our interview. The concept of an interpre-tive trail is very important and per-sonal to Jones. “For many years, I have wanted to incorporate this overlooked concept into the cognitive experience of those who visit our historical park. Although it is my opinion, you simply can’t completely understand the story of human history without considering the influence of the natural environ-ment. You must also recognize the choices that were made by the pioneers who first settled this land and the ad-aptations they had to make in order to survive in this rugged environment.”
Those that choose to partake in the opportunity to experience this new combination trail at the George Ranch may very well have both an education-al and emotional experience.
“The trail is designed to provide the public with a thought provoking and an interactive environment,” remarked Jones. “This trail is quiet and peaceful, yet it does provide the perfect setting to create an accurate representation of what the early settlers had to deal with when they moved into the area back in 1836.” This new self-guided trail is quite serene and definitely showcases the beauty and picturesque sections of the Dry Creek for the enjoyment of the public.
This unique trail and the creative opportunities that it will provide is the perfect fodder for family entertain-ment. What more could you ask for than the opportunity to see nature and history in its unmolested state? A visit to The Heritage Trail at the George Ranch Historical Park is simply a must for everyone, so put on your hiking boots, and check it out this summer. The George Ranch is in Richmond, Texas and is conveniently located off of FM 762. Visit www.georgeranch.org for more information.

Patti Fennesy: A Love of Nature
By Linda K. Eaves
Patti Fennesy, an incoming senior at Foster High
School, recently earned the Gold Award, the Girl Scouts’ highest honor. For her project, she worked to revitalize the landscap-ing at Austin Elementary School. “I wanted some-thing that would benefit the whole community, and the school needed land-scaping. I like that years from now I can drive by and see all of the plants grown up, and remember that I was responsible for starting it.”
Patti led the project from collect-ing donations and planting to water-ing and thank you notes. During the summer, she watered 16 crepe myr-tles and five live oak trees between her morning and afternoon march-ing band practice where she played the trumpet.
Patti enjoys volunteering at the Wildlife Center of Texas. “My fa-vorite time is between the owls and baby squirrels. The baby squirrels have lots of energy, but it’s very relaxing to feed them. They crawl all over you. One time we were all focused on feeding the squirrels; it was very quiet. A lady blurted out, ‘Can someone get this squirrel off my back?’”
“We use little syringes with a nipple on the end and some formula, and we have different formulas for different ages. The bunnies have to be held tight so they don’t bounce out of your hand. It can take an hour to feed one because they sit there and stare at you.”
“The owls are so beautiful. The barn owls are my favorite. The birds of prey seem to have their own look and person-ality. I really love being around animals. It’s fun; I can learn a lot because I want to work with animals in the future, so it’s a good experience.”
Patti also enjoys fostering kittens for the Houston SPCA. She and her family foster kittens that are too young, sick, recovering from surgery, or have been there a long time and need to get out of the shelter. “We provide the TLC until
they grow to two pounds to be returned for adop-tion. They’re usually ad-opted within a few days.”
They also foster kit-tens that need help get-ting used to living in a house and being held and played with. “Some are rough, and others are relaxed and super cuddly and sweet.”
Last summer, Patti attended Texas A&M-Galveston Sea Camp for marine biology. “I learned a lot, and it was
really good to live in the dorms and make new friends.”
She’s working on her senior red belt in Taekwondo. At Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Patti is ac-tive in the Youth Group, works in the nursery and is an altar server.
At Foster, she’s a member of the marching band, basketball, Foster Friends, Foster Book Club, Life Chain and PowerSET. Following graduation, Patti hopes to attend Texas A&M-Galveston to study ma-rine biology.
Her advice: “It’s always really good to be a part of things, or at least one thing. As long as you’re do-ing what you like, even if it’s taking your time and effort, I think you’ll be happy.”

Sun Blocking on the ExteriorTwenty percent of the solar heat
gained in your home comes from sun-light shining through windows, so shading your windows is a great way to start saving energy and money. On the west side of your home, plant shade trees, put up trellises with fast growing foliage or install awnings. Awnings can be retractable or stationary. Even with a blind on my west facing bath win-dow, the heat would melt the makeup off of my face in the afternoon. A qual-ity solar screen on the exterior of the window can affect a change instantly making the temperature inside much more pleasurable, as the sunlight is de-flected before it can enter the glass. Not only will these items save on cooling cost, but they will also help stop fading of your floors and furniture. Screens for the patio can also make the area bear-able and help with less sun entering the home.
HOME FEATUREBy Caron Lopez
Sun Shading on the InteriorToday’s window treatments are
fashionable and functional. Engineered with air pockets, honeycomb shades can deliver the best insulating rating and still let in enough light to avoid having to use artificial lighting dur-ing the day – two ways to save. Drap-ery, blinds, shutters, Roman shades and roller shades are products that uniquely protect, shade and insulate your windows. The bonus is the fashion statement that the different fabrics, texture and patterns bring to the room.
Chillin’ by Grillin’ As daytime outdoor temperatures
soar and the air conditioner is running to keep up, the added heat from appli-ances such as ovens and cooktops needs to be addressed. I love it if I can get my teenagers to flip burgers outside on the grill or Dad to BBQ the main course, especially leaving leftovers for another
meal and keeping my kitchen cool. An oven or boiling large pots of veggies on the kitchen cooktop can raise the temperature in your room five to ten degrees. Run other appliances such as the washer, dryer and dishwasher at times when the outdoor temperatures are lower, and there is less demand on your air conditioner.
Good intentions of raising the tem-perature of the home’s thermostat when leaving and resetting as we come home leads to discomfort in our home, and sometimes, with crazy Texas weather, our air is on upstairs while the heat is on downstairs because the kids have changed the settings. Instal-ling a programmable thermostat can solve those problems and save you up to 20% of you electric bill if it is set cor-rectly according to Rosenberg’s Howell Services. Thermostats that are easily programmed and installed generally cost under $100.
Tweeking the LeaksLoosing cool air or gaining the hot
air is a money drain. Examine areas around your home that may be the cul-prit. Focus on areas where pipes, ducts, vents and light passes through the ceil-ing or walls. Do not cover or insulate items that are sources of heat and may catch on fire. Check weather strip-ping on doors and windows and repair where needed.
J une’s cooling bills are beginning to soar and more is in store for Texas’ grueling heat through August! Follow these easy,
cost-effective ways to manage the heat so you can keep more cash in your pocket.

Following the seizure of $230,000 in cash connected to illicit drug activity in March, K-9 “Mike” was the focal point of an interview with Channel 13’s Kevin Quinn. K-9 “Mike” is pictured with Channel 13 photographer Matt Black.
K-9 “Mike” is a Belgian Malinois and has been working with the Fort Bend County Narcotics Task Force since 2008.
S ome folks might say K-9 “Mike” is worth his weight in gold, but that valuation falls way short.
Since K-9 “Mike” has been a member of the Fort Bend County Narcotics Task Force, he has helped bring in millions of dollars in seized cash and drugs, mostly along the U.S. 59 corridor.
K-9 “Mike,” a Belgian Malinois, showed off his skills in April when he and his handler, Detective M. Hricko, attended the National Narcotic Detector Dog Association (NNDDA) conference held in Laredo, Texas. The NNDDA Na-tionals played host to 96 K-9 handlers representing agencies throughout the
nation. Mike and Detective Hricko par-ticipated in the competition at the event with Mike taking third place.
“K-9 ‘Mike’ has been a valuable mem-ber of the Fort Bend County Narcotics Task Force since July 2008,” said Lt. Josh Dale of the Task Force. “Detective Hricko has been Mike’s handler since November 2011 and has done a great job maintaining K-9 ‘Mike’s’ high level of detection.”
Dale added that all the agencies rep-resented in the Task Force “are proud of this great K-9 team assigned to the Task Force.”
K-9 “Mike’s” most recent endeav-or was helping find $230,000 in cash linked to illicit drug activity when a tractor-trailer rig was stopped on U.S. 59 in Rosenberg on March 19th. Follow-ing the seizure, K-9 “Mike” was the focal point of an interview with Channel 13’s Kevin Quinn.

BUSINESSBRIEFS
Rosenberg Joins Fuller Realty Partners to Announce Development
of Rosenberg Business Park
The City of Rosenberg and the Rosenberg Development Cor-poration (RDC) are excited to join Fuller Realty Partners in announc-ing the creation of Rosenberg’s first deed-restricted business park. The Rosenberg Business Park – a 184-acre business park located on FM 2218 less than a half mile from the newly-designated In-terstate 69 (formerly US 59) – is the product of a public/private partnership between the City, the RDC and Fuller Realty Partners.
The partnership includes the construction of roads, water, sani-tary sewer, storm sewer, gas and electric improvements to serve the site, as well as drainage improvements which will result in no-onsite drainage requirements for the Park. Fuller Realty Partners will own the land and utilize their expertise to market and develop the property for commercial use. They will offer sites for purchase at competitive prices, as well design buildings to fit specific user needs for either lease or purchase. Fuller President/Partner William G. (Bill) Smith will serve as President of the Rosenberg Business Park, Ltd. Shovel-ready sites are anticipated in 2014.
Rosenberg Mayor Vincent M. Morales, Jr. stated, “The Rosenberg Business Park is an important part of our strategy to attract quality development to Rosenberg, bringing with it new jobs and capital investment. The ability to offer shovel-ready sites will greatly enhance our ability to attract new businesses.”
Rosenberg lies at the intersection of three Class I railroads, enjoys excellent access to the ports of Houston and Freeport, is adjacent to the newly designated I- 69, and is within 35 minutes of downtown Houston and an hour of both Bush and Hobby airports. All of these things combine to make it an optimal logistical location. The existing transportation infrastructure, large regional labor pool, and a business-friendly environment make Rosenberg an ideal city in the Houston area for doing business.
Located in Fort Bend County, Rosenberg is a natural exten-sion and expansion of the Sugar Land market which has been one of the top growth markets in the United States. Sections of Rosenberg have seen an explosion of new residential and retail development over the last ten years. Over 2,000,000 square feet of new retail has been built along US-59 just one exit to the east of the Rosenberg Business Park since 2005.
Fuller Realty Partners is a privately owned investment and development real estate firm headquartered in Houston. It was founded by William G. (Bill) Smith, Stephen G. Darnall and William Stewart Smith. The principals of Fuller have been partners for 20 years. The company focuses on office, industrial, land investment and development.
For more information on the Rosenberg Business Park, contact Rosenberg Economic Development at (832) 595-3339 or Fuller Realty Partners at (713) 850-8400.

W hen you hear the name Volvo, what do you think? Probably the first two things are safety and Swe-den. And, you would be right because the Volvo
brand continues to be a leader in automotive safety, and it’s now the only Swedish car brand. The 2013 Volvo XC60 em-bodies both of those concepts in a very big way as a mid-size crossover wagon that is subtly stylish on the outside, very Swedish on the inside and very safe all around.
For decades, Volvo pioneered automotive safety technol-ogy and car buyers looking for the safest car to drive usually chose the Swedish car brand. In 1999, Ford Motor Company bought Volvo and turned it into just another Ford division where it lost a lot of its brand identity. In 2010, Ford sold it to the Chinese automotive maker, Geely, and lo and behold, Volvo has returned to safety and Swedish design.
If you’re a fan of Swedish design, then you’re going to love the XC60. The interior features a flowing center con-sole that seems to float above the floor, and the dashboard wraps around you in a gentle curve. The materials used are soft, the leather lush and the colors calming.
But now to the safety fea-tures that set the XC60 apart from its rivals. The XC60 is the first Volvo equipped with their City Safety feature, a driver support system aimed at
VOLVO XC60
preventing or lessening collisions occurring at speeds of 19 mph or less. By utilizing a closing velocity sensor, the XC60 will either pre-charge the brakes or automatically brake the car to help avoid a rear-end collision or lessen its impact.
Another convenient Volvo safety first feature for families with young children is their built-in Dual Two-Stage Inte-grated Booster Seats with Adaptive Seatbelts. This elimi-nates the constant putting in and taking out booster seats to accommodate both kids and adults. These booster seats are integrated into the rear seats and even can be adjusted as the children grow. And, when the booster cushions are not needed, they’re easily folded into the rear seat cushions.
With a MSRP of $35,350, the base XC60 is equipped with a 240 hp, 3.2 liter that gets an estimated 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. If you need a little more power, you can opt for the 300 hp, 3.0-liter turbocharged engine that delivers fuel economy of 17 mpg city and 20 mpg highway.

T exans can be proud of so many things. The climate and land around us, mild winters and long summers and of course, our heritage. Our city leaders strive to
keep our heritage alive with historical parks, markers and museums. The suburbs of Houston are continuing to grow and prosper, and Fort Bend County has a significant history that leads a path to today’s successes. One Fort Bend city with a strong heritage is Fulshear.
When the “Old Three Hundred” set out in 1824 to settle on the land that was granted to them by the Mexican Government, Churchill Fulshear, his wife Betsy and four children came from Tennessee and began a life as plantation owners. The cotton gin and flour mill was the main agricultural source of in-come. In 1830, Churchill Fulshear, Jr. married Minerva Cartwright, and they had five children. Through inheritance, he acquired the planta-
tion and purchased land from the heirs of his brother and sisters who died. He was a veteran of the Texas War for In-dependence, and in 1850, he built a four-story mansion and named it “Lake Hill.”
Churchill Fulshear, Jr. became interested in horses and horseracing. Between 1850 and 1870, he operated a racecourse on his plantation that was called Churchill Downs. His student, John Higgins, became famous by training the first American horse to win the English Derby in England.
By 1888, Churchill Fulshear, Jr. granted the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad a right of passage through his land. This insight-ful move opened the doors to travel and develop-ment. In 1890, families moved from Pittsville to settle as the new town of Fulshear was platted.
Churchill Fulshear, Jr. died in 1892, and no other decedents lived there after him. By 1893, the population reached 250, and the town had a school district, a Methodist Church and essential businesses. Life was bustling as cattle, cotton, sugar cane, corn, rice and pecans became the main
crops with convenient railroad passage in and out of the city. Saloons were also a big contributor to the economy. It was
said that at one time there were as many as six to seventeen saloons located on Main Street. The local patrons could not shop on Saturdays because of the extreme crowds and often violence on the streets that occurred with shootings at the saloons. In 1910, a fire was started in one of the saloons, and it destroyed several buildings including the doctor’s office, drug store, post office, barber shop, grocery and dry goods store. The city re-built with two-story buildings and a larger downtown. The war, depression and economic times drove people away from this small town. In 1940, the population of Fulshear dropped to 287 and only five businesses.
Today, the population has grown to 1,145 according to 2011 census. City leaders are working to keep
the heritage alive. Unfortunately, the Fulshear mansion was torn down in the early 1930s and some of the old brick buildings on Main Street were destroyed. Fulshear Plaza remains, and the city has attractive parks such as Frances Smart Park and Irene Stern Community Park. The Village of Fulshear hosts events during the year to encourage community involvement. Cross Creek Ranch, a master planned community, is built around Flewellen Creek Park and Polishing Pond that invites residents to enjoy the natural world around them. With so much to offer, the charming town of Fulshear will continue to grow and prosper for generations to come.

O ver the course of the inaugural season, The Sugar Land Skeeters shared an epic journey with the City of Sugar Land - a journey that captivated cities for

As a founding partner, Texas Direct Auto, has a large presence at Constel-lation Field. Their sign adorns the Skeeters bull-pen, they have car dis-plays in the front plaza every Saturday night, and every $75 purchase at the
Texas Direct Auto Buzz Stop store earns you a free Skee-ters/TDA tee shirt! Swatson and Moe, the Skeeters life-sized mosquito mascots, are even headliners at the dealer-ship! You can swing by and have your picture taken with these adorable brothers on April 27th, May 25th, June 22nd or September 7th at the largest independent auto dealer-ship on earth - Texas Direct Auto!
“Texas Direct Auto has been an ideal partner for us,” said Assistant General Man-ager Lindsay Kirk. “They are a homegrown business right here in Sugar Land that is endeavoring to enhance their community outreach initiatives and give back to the Sugar Land community. They have an innovative busi-ness model that is a testament
to the future of where ‘small’ business can go.”
This season, Texas Direct Auto wil l be hosting a game entitle-ment on June 2nd featuring a youth jersey giveaway for the first 2,000 fans through the gates. Fan Appreciation Day will also be brought to you courtesy of Texas Direct Auto on September 15th and the first 2,000 fans in the gates will receive a custom Gary Gaetti bobble head.
Thanks to the partnership with Texas Direct Auto, the Skeeters have been able to widen their reach into other markets and have been able to support an iconic local business. In return, Texas Direct Auto has made it possible for the Skeeters to enhance the game day experience for each fan that enters Constellation Field.
“We are looking forward to another great season. Come out and join us for lots of fun, including Swatson and Moe appearances at our dealership, and coming soon, our very own Texas Direct Auto mascot. Also, kids look for our col-lectible jerseys once again for 2013,” said Jessica DeMarr, Director of Business Development for Texas Direct Auto.
The Skeeters are appreciative to Texas Direct Auto for their support and involvement, and look forward to many more years of working together to achieve continued growth and success for both organizations. For more in-formation, visit www.sugarlandskeeters.com.
