Motivate Cub Scouts with the Outdoor Activity Award

By Mark RayFrom the May-June 2013 issue of Scouting magazine

Scouting is all about outing, and Cub Scouts are all about swag. With the Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award, you can recognize Scouts who are active in the out-of-doors.

WHO CAN EARN THE CUB SCOUT OUTDOOR ACTIVITY AWARD? All Cub Scouts, from Tiger Cubs through Webelos Scouts. To earn the award, Scouts must attend an age-appropriate Cub Scout day camp or Cub Scout/Webelos Scout resident camp; complete rank-specific requirements; and complete a specified number of other outdoor-oriented requirements. (New this year, Tiger Cubs can attend Cub Scout/Webelos Scout resident camps with their adult partner or guardian; read more about this change at bit.ly/tigercubs.) Requirements for the award vary at each level; see below.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR TIGER CUBS? Attend Cub Scout day camp or Cub Scout/Webelos resident camp, complete one requirement in Tiger Cub achievement 5 (“Let’s Go Outdoors”), and complete three qualifying outdoor activities.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR WOLF CUB SCOUTS? Attend Cub Scout day camp or Cub Scout/Webelos resident camp, assemble the “Six Essentials for Going Outdoors” (Wolf elective 23b) and discuss their purpose, and complete four qualifying outdoor activities.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR BEAR CUB SCOUTS? Attend Cub Scout day camp or Cub Scout/Webelos resident camp, earn the Cub Scout Leave No Trace Award (Bear elective 25h), and complete five qualifying outdoor activities.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR WEBELOS SCOUTS? Attend Cub Scout day camp or Cub Scout/Webelos resident camp, earn the Outdoorsman activity badge, and complete six qualifying outdoor activities.

CAN A BOY EARN THE AWARD MORE THAN ONCE? Yes, he can earn it once during each program year, so long as he meets the requirements.

CAN A SCOUT REPEAT AN ACTIVITY FOR CREDIT IN A SUBSEQUENT YEAR? Yes. However, leaders should encourage boys to build on skills and experiences from previous years when working on the award for a successive year. Youth are not expected to participate in a different camp experience each year, but if that is possible it may help continu-ally challenge youth in different ways and give them new and fun things to do.

WHAT RECOGNITION ITEMS DO RECIPIENTS RECEIVE? The first time a boy earns the award, he receives the Cub Scout Outdoor Activity emblem (No. 14235; shown above). It goes on the right pocket flap of his uniform shirt. Each additional time he earns the award, he receives a Wolf Track pin (No. 14236) that’s worn on the pocket flap emblem.

WHAT ACTIVITIES QUALIFY FOR THE CUB SCOUT OUTDOOR ACTIVITY AWARD? Thirteen specified activities qualify, including participating in a nature hike or pack overnighter, explaining the buddy system, earning the Summertime Pack Award, and exploring a local city, county, state, or national park and discussing how a good citizen obeys park rules. See the Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award brochure (No. 13-228) for a detailed list.

DO THE ACTIVITIES HAVE TO BE DONE AS A PACK? Some, such as attending a pack overnighter, are by definition pack activities. Others, the den or family can do.

DURING WHICH PERIOD MUST THE REQUIREMENTS BE COMPLETED? Requirements for each rank must be completed during the time period a Scout is eligible to be working on that specific rank.

HOW DOES OUR PACK APPLY FOR THE AWARD FOR SCOUTS? Submit a copy of the Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award application (No. 512-013) to your local council for each Scout.

Today, Scouts in dozens of countries are working for peace by solving conflicts in their schools, building links between divided communities, teaching their peers about health and wellness, and repairing environmental damage. Now, when you join them, you and your Scouts can earn international recognition and a special patch.

Created by the World Scout Committee, the Messengers of Peace initiative recognizes Scout units worldwide that undertake projects that contribute to world peace. To participate, all you have to do is submit your peace-related projects (especially qualifying Eagle Scout and William T. Hornaday Award projects) through the Journey to Excellence website (www.scouting.org/Awards/JourneyToExcellence). When you do so—and check the Messengers of Peace box on the submission page—the Scouts and Scouters who participated will be eligible to wear a special Messengers of Peace ring patch around the World Crest on their uniforms.

All Messengers of Peace projects are automatically cataloged on a map at the Messengers of Peace website (http://scoutmessengers.com). You can visit the site to learn what Scouts around the world are doing.

“Since the earliest days of Scouting, Scouts have worked to make the world a better place,” said Scout Executive (Insert Scout Executive Name). “This new initiative is a great way to recognize the efforts of our Scouts not just to visualize world peace but to help bring it about.”

What kind of projects qualify? In terms of the MOP initiative, peace encompasses three dimensions:

1. The personal dimension: harmony, justice, and equality2. The community dimension: peace as opposed to hostility or violent conflict3. Relationships between humankind and its environment: security, social and economic welfare, and relationship with the environment

Any project that has a significant impact on the community in any one of the three dimensions above qualifies as a Messengers of Peace project.

To learn more about Messengers of Peace, contact your district executive, visit the BSA’s Messengers of Peace website at www.scouting.org/messengersofpeace or visit the websites listed above.

We’d also like to thank every donor that pledged this year. Funding is a vital tool in our ability to provide the Scouting program in Rockwall, Heath, Royse City, Nevada, Fate, and Wylie. How do we receive funding? We receive funding from the generous community do-nations and from families like yours. We cannot sustain our program without financial support and every dollar makes a difference. District LeadershipHave you ever wondered what volunteer oppor-tunities are available outside of a pack or troop? There are more than you may realize. In order to provide the Scouting program it takes a dedicated group of volunteers outside of the units to make sure that our district operates. Do you have an in-terest in recruiting youth? Do you enjoy fundrais-ing? Do you have a passion for activities? Would you like the opportunity to mentor unit leaders? Then the district committee or district commis-sioner Staff is the place for you! Fall recruitment is just around the corner and it’s a great time for your Scouting unit to get new mem-bers and adult volunteer leaders. The Texas Skies District is dedicated in offering a quality Scouting program to as many youth as possible…and we need your help! Towards the end of spring and throughout the summer, your Field Director, Ken Camp, will be visiting with each school principal to set up recruitment nights from September through early October. Please expect a call from Ken as he works with your local schools on getting dates set, boy rallies confirmed and fliers produced for a successful fall recruitment.

At the August 8th Roundtable, there will be a District Fall Recruitment Training for all units to attend, where your unit leaders can attend to get the latest scoop on the fall recruitment plan and the materials that will be available to your pack to help you recruit a ton of Cub Scouts. As school dates are set throughout the summer, the dates will be communicated with every unit so they are prepared and ready to go for the fall. June7 OA Chapter Meeting – 7:00 p.m. – Plymouth Park UMC Irving7 Cub Scout Day Camp Leader Training24-28 Cub Scout Day Camp – Camp Wisdom/Billy Sowell Scout Camp

Cub Scout Day CampDid you know that Cub Scouting fun happens all year long?! We will be proving this at Cub Scout Day Camp scheduled for June 24 - 28, 2013 from 8:30 – 4:45 pm at Camp Wisdom. This year’s theme is, “Centennial Roundup”. We are set to have a GREAT time! The cost of this year’s camp is $65.00. And boy, do you get a lot of cool stuff and fun for that small amount!

If you are a “walking leader” with your unit at Day Camp, make plans to attend Day Camp Training on Monday, June 7, 2013 at 10:00 am or 7:00 pm. It will be held at Plymouth Park United Methodist Church in Irving. We have made 2 sessions available for your convenience. We look forward to seeing you then!

PopcornIt is the best way to fund your unit’s Scouting Program for the year! By now, your unit should have selected a Popcorn Captain and be registered to sell for 2013. Getting your unit registered to sale popcorn this year is easier than it ever has been. All you do is go to the Circle Ten Council website www.circle10.org and complete the online registration.

We will be having significant and exciting changes in the way we conduct Popcorn Sale this year. Please make this a priority and register your unit today at www.circle10.org.

For further information, please contact Mary Creason, District Popcorn Kernel at (214) 450-4881 or [email protected].

School Night for ScoutingThis is the most exciting time of year when we add new families to Scouting! We will be making significant and exciting changes for School Night for Scouting! In order to get prepared to do a successful recruitment, we will be having Join Scouting Night Training. This year, we have re-vamped the program and it will take your whole pack to conduct a successful training. This training is extremely important that all unit leaders and interested parents from your pack attend!

The Join Scouting Night training for Irving will be Monday, August 5, at 7:00 pm at Plymouth Park United Methodist Church. The training for Coppell will be Monday, August 12, at 7:00 pm at First United Methodist Church.

Cub Scout Day CampCub Scout Day Camp is scheduled for June 17-21, 2013 from 3:00 – 8:00 pm at Farmers Branch Historical Park. This year’s theme is, “Centennial Round-Up”. We are set to have a good time! Please contact Brad Pense at the e-mail below if you have any questions. [email protected]

Face-to-Face Youth Protection TrainingIt is that time again, time for anyone attending Cub Scout Day Camp/Twilight Camp, Webelos Resident Camp, Boy Scout Resident Camp, NYLT or Winter Camp in the state of Texas to take the new, facilitator led Face-to-Face Youth Protection Training course. If you took this course last year you are good for another year since like the online course, this course is good for two (2) years.

But, if you did not take the Face-to-Face YPT course last year and will be attending one of the above listed camps this year you will need to take this new course. Good news is it will also count towards your Youth Protection certification for BSA Membership and Re-chartering. For week-end camping, normal meetings, other activities, and re-chartering the computer based BSA youth protection training is still sufficient.

North Star District will also be offering Face-to-Face YPT sessions on and 25th at Aldersgate UMC from 9 am to 11 am.

The Big D Fleur-De-Lis ProjectThe Big D Fleur-De-Lis project is the 3rd Quarter activity for Circle 10’s centennial celebration. Its purpose is to rally the Scouting Community of the Circle Ten Council around the creation of the World’s Largest Fleur-De-Lis using crushed aluminum cans. We intend to document the accomplishment and apply for the Guinness Book of World Records designation. Start saving your washed and crushed aluminum cans now. More details on where to take the cans will be provided shortly. Check out the Circle Ten website for more information.

Is your unit’s Top Leader Trained? While we have until 2015 to answer YES for all of our units, we need to be able to say that for over 70% of them by the end of 2013. Currently we are at 51%.

As mentioned last month, a list of trained / not trained Top Unit Leaders (along with our percentage to our ultimate goal of 100%) is now available on the North Star District website. Just click on Unit Training under the training section then select your unit type (pack, troop, team or crew) to see if your unit’s Top Leader is trained or not. If they are not, you will also see what training they need to take to become trained.

Remember, to be a “Trained Leader”, an adult volunteer needs to have successfully completed all the training as proscribed by National. If you are not sure that you are a Trained Top Unit Leader, give your district executive a call.

Cub Scout RoundtableOur June Cub Scout Roundtable will move back to our regular second Tuesday of the month at our regular location at 7:30. For the June 11th meeting, our themes will be Outdoors & H2O and Courage. Join us for our annual outside roundtable for lots of games and crafts, followed by our hot dog cookout picnic and fellowship.

Just a reminder that Cub Scout Roundtable is an adult training meeting, so please make other arrangements for your children.

Boy Scout RoundtableBoy Scout Roundtable will be held at the LDS Stake Center on June 13th. This will be the last time the Boy Scout Roundtable will stand alone. We will continue to hold joint roundtables in August. The LDS Stake Center is located on Highway 121 Bypass and Huffines Blvd. You will be receiving the latest information from the district and Circle Ten.

July 2013 No District Meetings or activities Scheduled

School is wrapping up in the Trinity Woods District and that means one thing. FUN! FUN! FUN! Packs have responded to the Summertime Pack award challenge and are planning many good activities for themselves. Additionally, all those Tigers, Wolves, Bears and Webelos will be able to have a great time at the District’s Twilight Centennial Roundup Camp. It will be great fun. As always Scout Fun depends on Scouters to help make it all happen, so pull yourself up by your boot straps and ring the cowbell to tell Laura you’re willing to help. You can reach her at [email protected].

The fun this summer isn’t just for the Cub Scouts. Boy Scouts and Venturers are heading off for fun, challenge and adventure to one of the many BSA Summer camp programs. We even have a few folks going to the new Summitt-Betchel Scout Re-serve for the National Jamboree. If your son can’t make it to a camp this summer with his troop then all is not lost. Your very own District Execu-tive is Camp Director at Clements Scout Ranch’s, Trevor Rees-Jones Scout Camp and would be will-ing to find him a troop to “mustang” along with. Remember, that boys who attend Summer Camp have an 85% chance of being in Scouts next year and boys that don’t only have a 50% chance. I want to help your Scouts, stay in Scouts, so they get the most out of the program. I don’t know of any units that couldn’t use just a little more help.

Be sure and keep an eye out for information on the recruitment webinars happening soon. These will be greatly beneficial to helping your unit maximize the fall recruitment process. Speaking of fall recruitment, it has already started. It’s that time for your unit to solidify its program and lead-ership for the coming year. Step out and step up to help your youth to have the best program.

Poptober is just around the corner… Make sure your unit is signed up to sell. This fundraiser puts 70% of the sales back to our council and 28% of it comes back to the unit. The traditional Take Or-der method has the best sales/hour on your time investment. Get with your packs/troops/crews finance chair and make sure you all have enough funds to do all the cool stuff you have planned.

We still need qualified persons to be unit commis-sioners to help make sure we have phenomenal program and retention in all our units. Please contact Greg Ryan with any leads on Scouters from the past that are in the community that you feel would be a good commissioner. Again con-tact Greg Ryan at [email protected] with any names for unit commissioners or roundtable commissioners (including your own).

There remain several vacancies on the District Committee. I encourage anyone with a heart for service or with the knowledge of those who do to contact Jim Kingman, District Chairman, at [email protected] .

TRINITY WOODS DISTRICT cont.We would like to have your email as well so if you think we don’t have it yet, email Frank just to say hi and he will add it to the list at [email protected]

We still need each unit to have a blurb each month about the cool things that are happening with each unit and desperately need someone besides the district executive to write our newsletter. (Seri-ously, have you read this stuff)? We want our articles to be like the rest of Scouting, volunteer driven. Any units wishing to be in next month’s newsletter should forward article to Frank Griffin, District Executive until we can get someone else to journal the adventures of our district. The dead-line for the next newsletter is December 14, 2012.

Here goes A BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE for all you do to keep Scouting an excellent program for the youth.

It is an exciting time in the Trinity Woods District. Keep your eyes on us and watch us grow.
