Commentary and mark:
The requirement for 6 poems is met. The work shows a detailed knowledge of the poems and a sensitive
well‐informed understanding. There are insights into the use of language and a fair amount of analysis
using technical language though there are occasions when the analysis is incomplete or imprecise e.g.
ignores 'boom' in the onomatopoeia in Piano, does not really analyse fully the use of 'tossing' and
'seasoning' in Poem at 39 etc. There is focus on the assignment and, though the style is a little impersonal,
there is engagement shown through the informed personal evaluation. The wider reading poems are
treated with the development expected at this level, perhaps even more than strictly necessary, though
not more than the poems from the Anthology.
The folder has enough detailed analysis just to reach the 23‐26 Band with a mark of 23.

Commentary and mark:
The requirement
for
6 poems
is
met.
The
work
shows
a sound
understanding
with
some
detailed
reference and a clear understanding of meaning and tone. There is appreciation of the poets' use of
language and style including the use of technical terms but comment is confined to explanation of meaning
and describing general effects e.g. 'is a strong visual image', 'makes the reader feel nauseated by evoking
this suffocating smell' etc. (The one exception is 'crystal stair'.) There is focus on the assignment. The
wider reading poem references are brief but do refer to specific quotations used in comparison. The
criticism shows engagement with the poems.
The folder falls at the lower end of the 15‐18 Band with a mark of 15.

Commentary and mark:
The requirement for 6 poems is met. The work shows detailed knowledge of the poems and generally a
sound understanding
though
this
does
falter
e.g.
with
regard
to
the
'act
of
no
consequence'
in
A
Mother
in
a Refugee Camp, War Photographer exploring the loss of soldiers etc. Appreciation of the poets' use of
language and style is shown and there is some success in linking structure to meaning but otherwise there
is a tendency for quotation + naming of figure of speech + general effect e.g. negative memories in Piano,

the manic background in A Mother .....Camp, the assonance of 'boom' etc. There are a few examples of
attempts at precise analysis e.g. the metaphors in War Photographer .
Focus on the assignment is maintained for most of the time but does drift occasionally. The wider reading
references develop one detailed comparison for each poem but are fairly brief. Although referring to 'the
reader' throughout
(with
one
exception)
engagement
with
the
texts
was
clear.
The folder falls within the 19‐22 Band with a mark of 19. The analysis would need to be more
consistently precise and the detailed understanding more secure for a higher mark.

Commentary and mark:
The requirement for 6 poems is met. A limited knowledge of the poems is shown and there is a general
understanding. There is a response to the assignment though the references to the wider reading poems
move away from the named theme.
Though relevant material is selected and specific lines are identified, overall not enough of the criteria are
met to move this into the higher band.
The folder falls into the 4‐6 Band with a mark of 6.

Commentary and mark:
The requirement for 6 poems is met. There is sound knowledge of the poems. Understanding of meaning
in general
is
shown
by
summary
and
some
explanation
of
quotations
but
this
is
fairly
superficial
and
sometimes falters on the detail e.g. the rust‐coloured hair does not belong to the refugee mother.
Some recognition of the writers' techniques is evident with description of the structure and naming of
figures of speech and one attempt at analysis with 'tacks and splinters' in Mother to Son.
Focus is generally maintained and there is a clear personal response to the texts. Brief points of
comparison with the Anthology poems are made.
There is no consideration for the style and accuracy of the candidate's writing in the mark‐scheme but it
does hamper
communication
of
the
ideas
in
places
e.g.
the
refugee
mother's
motives.
The folder just falls into the 11‐14 Band with a mark of 11.

Commentary and mark:
The
requirement
for
6
poems
is
met.
The
work
shows
highly
detailed
knowledge
of
the
poems
together
with a sensible mature understanding. There is sophisticated appreciation of the use of language and
technical vocabulary is used skilfully in the analysis.
Though the wider reading poems have been treated in a great deal of detail, this has not been at the
expense of the Anthology poems.
There is clear focus on the assignment, the exploration of memory, and a well‐argued personal response.
Just occasionally the candidate's knowledge of the context perhaps takes the interpretations beyond what
the poem itself justifies e.g. with Remember.
This folder falls in the top band 27‐30 and receives a mark of 27.

Commentary and mark:
The requirement for 6 poems is not met as only one wider reading poem is included. There is sound knowledge of
the Anthology poems with some detail and understanding of how meaning develops in one of the poems but thin on
the others. To offset this a little there is some recognition of the writers' techniques: repetition, imagery and so on.
There is response to the terms of the assignment and opinions are offered. The standard of the work on the
Anthology poems would bring this folder just below the 11‐14 Band but as only 4 poems are referenced 3 marks
need to
be
deducted
giving
a final
mark
of
7.
