From the Editor

It is the middle of June and convention time is nearly over. Congratulations to all the new executives that will be sharing their talents with other members for the next two years. Thank you to all that have completed their terms and are moving on to other areas of service.

I was fortunate to represent national council at the annual provincial convention of the Military Ordinariate (MO) in Greenwood, Nova Scotia. It was a delightful honour for me. The numbers were small, but the enthusiasm was huge! We had a wonderful sharing of experiences of having seen the Lord, and I am happy to see a number of items from the MO in this issue. Read “The Military Child” by an anonymous author, and you might want to add the prayer for military families to your daily prayers.

The item of one parish council planting a garden for its local food bank is very timely. It is never too early to initiate someone into the workings of the League even at an annual provincial convention as can be seen in the pictures of future members!

• You will see more fires are blazing as Catch the Fire! presentations continue. • There are some lovely pictures of the Cut Knife, Saskatchewan, art show. • Another winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal is highlighted. • Some members found a special way to provide financial help to the Santa Maria Senior Citizens

Home in Regina, Saskatchewan. Another item tells of a fundraiser for Mother’s Day. • You will also find lists of members who have received awards and pins. Please keep sending

these to us. • Remember to try the quiz and submit your

answers.

Next month, councils in New Brunswick will be highlighted and, as always, we welcome submissions from every council in Canada. The deadline is June 30th for the July issue and, in August, Newfoundland and Labrador will be highlighted.

Blessings for an enjoyable and safe summer!

Cecile Miller National Chairperson of Communications

BA’s Bonne Aventure Prince Edward Island is like a comfortable quilt made of squares of rusty red fields and green grass fields decorated with hills and valleys upon which are perched colourful homes and white churches with steeples. Little waterways run through its scenery and tractors wait at the ready to get to work.

National Secretary-Treasurer Judy Lewis chauffeured me around, took me out for a brisk walk on the boardwalk in Summerside, and showed me where to buy fresh lobster and scallops right off the boats before bringing me into the good company of members. Everyone is so friendly on this island! Marion Murphy awakened convention participants to their spiritual colours before Sr. Audrey Brocklehurst spoke about her

spiritual journey to ministry to female prison inmates. Great love and mercy can change lives.

Janet McLean, the new past president of the Quebec Provincial Council, loves travelling by train, so I thought I would “ride the rails” to the provincial convention in Quebec City. It was lovely and relaxing; I discovered that a large part of the province consists of many long, skinny flat farms. I was able to rest, read and write a couple of reports.

At first, I wondered if I had landed in Ireland rather than Quebec, as the opening evening’s gathering took place in a small town called Shannon and featured Irish dancers, singers and musicians. The next day, improvisation was the name of the game. Laryngitis silenced Janet, so she mimed her words to incumbent Suzanne Wiseman. It was a good collaborative endeavor. When the buses went to the wrong hotel, we hastily carpooled to St. Patrick’s Church for the closing mass celebrated by Arcbbishop Gerald C. Lacroix (Quebec), who seemed to thoroughly enjoy his time with us. Coming from a town of 101 citizens, he encouraged us not to be afraid to be few in number but to continue to be passionate and loyal to our calling as women in the church. Welcome President Suzanne!

The next stop was Grand Falls – Windsor for the Newfoundland and Labrador annual provincial convention. Outgoing president Lidwina Critch delegated me into the hands of 10 different members as the convention proceeded. Thank you to Anne, Ruby, Cecilia, another Cecilia, Margaret, Pauline, Millie and Madonna who took me under their wings and made sure I felt welcome and at home in their province. It was great to see National Spiritual Advisor Archbishop Martin Currie (St. John’s) on his home turf too. I savoured cod and scrunchions, tasted fish’n’brewis, waltzed to fiddle music, laughed myself to tears, shared hear-to-heart stories and thoroughly enjoyed the sound and performance of the Cathedral Belles’ choir. Welcome to the national table, president Rita Janes.

Looking ahead, pray that God carries me safely to Ottawa, Calgary, Waterloo and Toronto during the month of June. From the Rogers & Hammerstein musical, Carousel: “June is busting out all over!” Betty Anne Brown Davidson National President

Catherine L’Heureux of St. James Parish Council in Vernon, British Columbia, started her own moving advertisement for Catch the Fire! — a car! The car (below) was decked out in flame colored balloons and signs.

Jeanne Wilson of Sacred Heart Parish Council in Whitehorse, Yukon, reports a Catch the Fire! workshop was held May 4th.

Toronto Diocesan President Mary Capobianco reported two workshops were held in the diocese: one held on November 24, 2012 (hosted by Nativity of Our Lord Parish Council in Etobicoke, Ontario) had 110 attendees with 28 parish councils participating, and the other, held April 20th, had 85 attendees (photo below).

Mary reports a third workshop was held on June 1st in the northern region of the diocese.

Spotlight on Military Ordinariate Our Lady of the Airways Parish Council, CFB Ottawa,

Ontario Chairperson of Communications Feilan Xia-Baker reports the council has been very busy this year planning a pancake breakfast and a soup and bun during Lent, and supporting chapel activities. One recent event was a Mother’s Day basket prize. Two baskets full of spa items were raffled and raised $160.00. The funds raised were given to various charities the council supports, which

includes St. Matthews’ Harmony House, Samaritan’s Purse, and

Miriam Centre. The winners of the baskets were Sandra Gould (left) and Donna Baker (right).

Holy Family Parish Council, CFB Kingston, Ontario

The council was busy this year, rolling out dough and forming more than 100 dozen perogies for a parish council fundraiser. The monies raised were used to send members to the Military Ordinariate annual provincial convention in Greenwood, Nova Scotia. Pictured left is Carole Matiowsky, whose mother-in-law is credited with the recipe.

The Military Ordinariate has been blessed with new life at each of its last four provincial conventions! Below left is Marjorie Klemen, being held by her mom, Allison Klemen, and below right is Military Ordinariate Provincial President Donna Penney holding Catherine Cyr (mother Teena Cyr).

Holy Name Parish Council, CFB Cold Lake, Alberta After seeing an idea online, Chairperson of Community Life Pat Malley set about obtaining space for the council to grow a garden, with produce entirely destined for the Cold Lake food bank. CFB Cold Lake donated two garden plots and the CFB greenhouse donated tomatoes, cabbage, celery, spinach and pumpkin. A total of five women worked in the garden at various times and a

total 300 pounds of tomatoes, potatoes and other vegetables were grown. The garden was a “win-win” as it provided fun and fulfillment to the gardeners, and food for those who use the food bank. (pictured: members Pat Malley, Shelley Bahm and Coreena Cole)

The official flower of the military child is the dandelion. Why?

The plant puts down roots almost anywhere, and it's almost impossible to destroy. It's an unpretentious plant, yet good looking. It's a survivor in a broad range of climates. Military children bloom everywhere the winds carry them. They are hardy and upright. Their roots are strong, cultivated deeply in the culture of the military, planted swiftly and surely. They’re ready to fly in the breezes that take them to new adventures, new lands and new friends. Experts say that military children are well-rounded, culturally aware, tolerant and extremely resilient. Military children have learned from an early age that home is where their hearts are, that a good friend can be found in every corner of the world and in every color, and that education doesn’t only come from school. They live history. They learn that to survive means to adapt, that the door that closes one chapter of their life opens up to a new and exciting adventure full of new friends and new experiences. -Author Unknown

Prayer for Military Families

Lord, Creator of all, we ask for your protection of our military families, and especially those whose husbands and wives,

sons and daughters, are presently involved in protecting us against terrorism.

We ask you to be with them as they engage in necessary actions to guarantee

the safety and freedom of all those who are victimized in Afghanistan, and everywhere else in this world.

Give the loved ones of our military members in combat the strength to endure the lengthy separations,

and the courage to carry on as families supporting each other. This we ask in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

AMEN

Council News Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish

Council, Cut Knife, Saskatchewan Parish Council President Sheila Hamel and her daughter, Joanne Hamel, assembled a community art show to celebrate the feast day of Our Lady of Good Counsel. The art show included works from over 20 artists and included cross stitches, quilts, paintings, sculptures and

more. The show ran from April 27th to May 1st, and was viewed by over 100 school students and 70 adults from the

surrounding community. The collection taken was donated to Battlefords Interval House in North Battleford, Saskatchewan.

Good Samaritan Parish Council, Regina, Saskatchewan Parish Council President Antonette Rothecker reports $2,000 was donated by the council to Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home in Regina to cover the costs of refurnishing a room. Antonette noted many council members reside at the home, and the old wing they are refurnishing dates back to the 1960s. Once furnished, the room will have a name plate installed to commemorate the council.

Antonette also reported 15 members were to receive Maple Leaf Service pins but asked for the cost of the pins to be donated to a family (or families) who needed assistance in the community instead. The families chosen to receive the donation were picked according to the request of Catholic schools in the area and by word of mouth.
