June, the month that SUMMER finally arrives. The Summer Solstice June 21st at 7:51 CDT. Solstice is from a Latin word solstitium, sol (sun) and stitium (to stop), reflecting the fact that the Sun appears to stop at this time. We see the Sun higher in the sky throughout the day, and its rays strike the Earth at a more direct angle. In short, it is going to get HOT and after the winter we have had, who is going to complain. Please mark your calendar for the June events: Opening Day June 7th- this should be a wonderful event with a water slide for the kids, free ham-burgers and hot dogs; a blessing of our fleet and a band on the deck; Father’s Day the 15th; Bingo the 19th; and Sunset Sunday the 22nd.

May started with a bang with Cinco de Mayo, the day a small Mexican army defended a village called Puebla over the French army. Then came the day that none of us should ever forget, Mother’s Day. Steve and the staff served 300 people that day with a wonderful brunch. Memorial Day weekend, we gathered for our annual Ship Island Rendezvous. I counted between 50 and 60 boats and who knows how many people. If you did not get to go, check out the You Tube Video “GYC Ship Island.” Sam V. and his drone will give you a bird’s eye view of the party. Thank you to Chef Jason and Clark for cooking hamburgers and hot dogs for all of us.

We finished the weekend with the annual Race for the Case. Congratulations to Dawson Doucet (Stallion) with a 2nd place in the Non- Spinnaker Division and Sam Hopkins with a 2nd in the Portsmouth Division. There were a total of 18 boats participating this year- the numbers are picking up.

Folks, keep up the good work as you see there are nine new prospective members posted this month. Please con-tinue to encourage your family and friends to join our club. It is an easy sell once you get them to the club and see what we have to offer.

As I said last month, the House and Entertainment Committees are al-ways looking for ways to attract members to the club. If you have an event/idea you think would work or like to see, fill out a “Hey Steve” card. We will see how we can incorporate submitted ideas.

Speckled Trout Fishing Tips: Speckled Trout hunt oyster beds, rocks, jetties, grassbeds, wrecks, tidal flats next to drop offs, and opening of bayous — any thing, that changes the bottom of the sea floor.

When tide, wind, and water temperature are right at these locations the speckled trout feed on croakers, pinfish, small mul-let, menhaden, and shrimp. Majority of these prime speck feeding grounds are close to deeper water that as hideout when the tide gets real low, water temps become uncomfortable, or sharks, porpois-es, and jack crevalle move in.

What a great start to what we believe will be a very exciting summer at the club. I received numer-ous compliments about our Cinco de Mayo Party, Mother’s Day Brunch, Jazz Brunch with Jesse Hill, and overall services the club provides. Mark your calendar for the first weekend in June to attend the Opening Day festivities. We will start on Friday night, June 6th with Chart Room Live, music pro-vided by Dr. Gene Gaddy. The Chef will also provide his spectacular Friday night menu. On Saturday, June 7th, we will celebrate our Opening Day with a Flag Raising Ceremony starting at 2:00pm, Bless-ing of the Fleet Parade 2:30pm, and a FREE PARTY at 5:00pm. The free party includes hamburgers, hot dogs, sides, two waterslides, snow cones and live entertainment with Jay Marcel and Band. Then, last but not least, we will provide our Sunday Champagne Brunch on the 8th. I look forward to seeing you this weekend as we celebrate our 80th year.

Summer is an extremely busy time at the club with a number of children using our facility. Parents, please remind your children of our safety policies including, “no running”, especially in the club-house and parking lot areas. Our lifeguards will ask your children to sit out of the pool if they can-not follow directions. We encourage families to use our amenities and to have a great safe summer. We will host another BINGO on Thursday, June 19th at 6:00pm. We will have plenty of prizes availa-ble, so, come on down! Our first Sunset Sunday will be June 22nd, with a hamburger/hot dog buffet and live entertainment. If you have not been to a Thursday night “Grill Your Steak Night”, you are missing out on a good time. All you need to bring is your own steak and cook it on the pits available on the deck. The club will provide the sides and Happy Hour drink specials from 5:00pm to 6:30pm.

We look forward to a very eventful and exciting summer at the club. Try your best to attend as many activities as you can. It is not too early to mark your calendar for our 4th of July celebration. This is one of the biggest events of the year.

I am happy to announce that the St. Patrick’s Sailing Team, under the direction of Samson Vasquez, took first place again in the Mississippi High School Team Racing Champi-onship- Congratulations!

At the May meeting of the GYC Ladies Auxiliary we greeted our largest crowd this year, and we were happy to see many new faces taking interest in our organization. Our General Manager, Steve Chatelain provided us with a deli-cious meal of tenderloin and fish with all the trimmings. Many thanks to Steve, Chef Jason and his staff.

Our hostesses were Sandy Morrison, Vicky Heath, Gail Crowell, Pattye Warren, and Carolyn Foster. The table decora-tions consisted of potted plants and shells. The potted plants were given as door prizes to our drawing winners.

Sydney Massey and Terry Roberson presented us with an informative and interesting talk about CASA (Court Ap-pointed Special Advocates), a volunteer program providing support to children from an unstable home environment.

This month’s Bridge winners were Dottie Long and Sharon Trullender. Congratulations to both ladies.

Beginning June 2nd, come join us for “Aerobic Swimming” sessions starting at 8 am on Monday, Wednesday and Fri-day. The instructor will be our own Christine O’Bannon at a cost of $5.00 per session.

The annual Mother/Daughter/Granddaughter luncheon will be held June 18th. This will be an opportunity to meet and greet our fellow members and their families. We encourage every participant to wear hats and a prize will be awarded for the most unique chapeau. Hostesses for the gathering will be Jana Jarrell and Ruthie Kennedy.

If you know of any information changes for our yearbook, please let us know. In addition, if you are aware of any of our member families having health issues please contact Jo Ellen Mechatto, so that appropriate cards can be sent to them.

We are all looking forward to a great meeting and summer. Lynn Ward Borders President, Ladies Auxiliary

Steve Chatelain General Manager
