Public Bon Dance Practice

Rev. Ryoso Toshima arrived in Hawaii in 1972. He has served Hawaii Kyodan at Hanapepe, Honakaa, Paauilo, Kamuela, Kohala, Waipahu, Honolulu Betsuin temples. Before entering the ministry, Rev. Toshima was a teacher in Japan. His teaching background makes him a great teacher of Jodo Shinshu dharma. Toshima Sensei will be taking care of our Sunday services while Rev. Jan is on vacation.

A Joyful Path Right Now Her smile lightens the room as she joyfully greets me at a recent Oahu BWA event. She notices that I look a bit confused even after we had exchanged warm greetings. My silent questions scream, "Why are you here?” "Are you a member? ". But I could not find words to continue to appear more poised and composed. "I just joined the BWA”, she offers and saves me further embarrassment. And she continues to share her journey into BWA. “Our family was always a part of the temple organization. My father was one of the temple leaders who was always at the temple for every building, fundraising, or community project. My mother was always in the kitchen or in the sewing room. While we were growing up, we attended temple but it did not have the same priority after high school and as we started working and raising our children.” What follows the historical path gives me a warm glow. She continues, “It was not my mother or my family’s involvement. It was our Okusan. She was a speaker at one of our services. Her message was about the joy she feels to be with a temple and its members. She is so cheerful and bubbly. It is a joy to have her in our presence. Her gentle words always welcome us, cheer us. She makes us feel so appreciated.” “As I listened to her, I realized how convenient it was to tell myself that when I retired, I would be more active at the temple. After listening to our minister’s wife, I told myself, I can do this now. It does not have to wait until I retire. Now is the time.” There are countless paths to a temple. This is one. June 2014 (President’s Corner) Aloha, Our spring cleaning efforts have started and we need the help of our members and affiliate organizations to do their part in cleaning out closets to check items that are no longer needed that should be removed to be donated or discarded. Some items need to be consolidated and stored in the proper location. Please contact Reverend Jan Youth or Dean Sakamoto if you are able to assist. Our 40th Anniversary fundraiser is underway and you can support the temple by purchasing lei

tickets which can be redeemed till July 2015. Please contact Rene Mansho (40th Anniversary chairperson) or any board member for information.

We are planning to order Mililani Hongwanji logo wear shirts and we are currently working on the shirt design. Additional information will be forthcoming.

Now that the termite treatment (tenting) of the Temple structure has been completed, our focus will now be to work on the Minister’s residence. I would like to thank Lester Ogawa who worked with the tenting contractor and for his help to survey and develop a list of the repair work that needs to be done. I would also like to thank Robert Asato for his help to work with the contractor who completed the sanitization work. Thank you to our Building Committee and “Thursday Gang” volunteers for all the work that you do to keep our facilities operational.

BWA News for June by Lyn

The BWA will be participating in the Pan Pacific Festival Parade to be held on Sunday, June 15, from 5:00-7:00 PM. The parade will march from Ft. DeRussy to Kapiolani Park. If you are planning to participate, please wear something purple. The next BWA Hosha is scheduled for Saturday, June 21, at 8:30 AM. Group 6, coordinated by Bobbi Chang, will clean/prepare the temple for Sunday service. If you are unable to help please find someone to fill in for you and contact Bobbi. There will be no hospital visitation this month. As part of the “199,000 Cranes for Peace” project of the HIUHBWA, everyone is encouraged to fold cranes! At the Kona Conference, over 9,000 cranes were collected and presented to Miles Okumura of Honokaa Hongwanji. Your folded cranes (unopened) will be collected by Theo Hirai and be given to Honokaa Hongwanji in August. Each crane folded will represent a person who died in Japan from the atomic bomb. Don’t forget the Back-to-School drive (June through mid-July) to help children of Waialua Elementary School in need of school supplies! Here are some of the items that the children can use: new/gently used backpacks, pencils, erasers (cap and block), small size Elmer’s white glue, filler paper, black composition books, colored pencils, and wide tip colored marker pens. Thank you for your support in another worthwhile community service activity. On Friday, May 9, twelve members volunteered to count, bundle, staple, and sort materials for the Hawaii State Public Library Summer Reading Program for the entire state of Hawaii. Thank you to Susan Nakagawa (Salt Lake Moanalua Public Library) and Carrie Kawamoto for arranging this community service activity! The next meeting will be held on Sunday, June 1. Message from Joyce Ogawa about Membership Conference:

On May 2-4, twenty Mililani members attended the 12th BWA State Membership Conference at the Sheraton Keauhou Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay. Attended by over 250 BWA members from throughout the state, the conference was organized to encourage fellowship. Workshops included making a golden chain lauhala bracelet, how to recycle materials by remaking them into something useful, learning meditation and yoga, taking an historical tour of Sheraton Kona and a membership workshop presented by Lois Toyama and June Asato of the Federation Membership Committee. .

One of our former member’s (the late Sharon Kai) mother, Motoe Tada, was recognized for her extraordinary service to the BWA, Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii and to the community in a resolution presented at the General Membership Meeting. Also recognized was Harue Furumoto of Honokaa. As part of the closing program, Kelvin Sewake, presented a very moving slide presentation as he played the trumpet to the song “May Peace Prevail” for which our own member, Carrie Kawamoto, wrote the words. The conference was a very enjoyable experience for all!!

Hanafuda Sundays are back—

Hanafuda lessons and practice for adults and children. The sensei of the Mililani BWA will offer lessons on the history of the game, how to play and friendly competition for all who come by. We will be teaching Hanafuda Hawaii Style and the new extra large cards as well as the traditional sized cards will be available. Will be showing DVD instructional video on how to play produced by Hanafuda Hawaii Style.

Resolving Life’s Problems through Buddhism Rev. Marvin Harada Orange County Buddhist Temple

This summer I am honored to have been asked to speak at the Buddhist Study Center of Hawaii’s summer

session. I intend to focus my talks around a course that I teach for our Orange County Buddhist Church’s

Buddhist Education Center. The course is titled, “Resolving Life’s Problems through Buddhism.” I will be

discussing the following areas:

1. The matter of life and death.

2. Relationships (mainly marital).

3. Work issues.

4. Self-esteem. We all face problems in life.

Some of our problems are big problems. Some of our problems are little problems. Sometimes little problems

don’t get resolved, and they become big problems. Big or small, there isn’t anyone who can say they don’t face

problems in life. Buddhists over the many centuries have resolved the greatest issues of life, like their own

impending death, or being handicapped, or having your spouse leave you for someone else. Their solutions

were not easy. They didn’t find them on page 50 of a Buddhist text or anything like that. However, because the

Dharma was the foundation of their life, that foundation lifted and liberated them from their life’s problem.

Marvin Harada is the minister at Orange County Buddhist Temple where he has been serving since 1986. He is

also codirector for the Center for Buddhist Education for the Buddhist Churches of America. He graduated with

his BA in Religious Studies from the University of Oregon and went on to earn his MA in Buddhist Studies

from the Institute of Buddhist Studies (IBS). He has also studied at Chu-o Bukkyo Gakuin and Ryukoku

University, as well as studying under Rev. Gyomay Kubose at the Buddhist Temple of Chicago. He is the

author of Discovering Buddhism in Everyday Life (2011). He is married to his wife Gail and has 2 children.
