All the believers met together in one place and shared everythingthey had. They sold their property and possessions and shared the

money with those in need. They worshiped together at theTemple each day, met in homes for the Lords Supper, and sharedtheir meals with great joy and generosity all the while praising

God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day theLord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

I ts competition season. With the Football WorldCup, the Ryder Cup, Wimbledon, the US Open, and the Commonwealth Games, theres really no

getting away from it for the next few weeks. We evenhad a major world sporting event here in Peebles two

weeks ago - the the Enduro World Series mountain bike race, which came to Britain for the very first timeand brought thousands of people into Peebles for a veryexciting weekend.

At the other end of the spectrum (with all due respect tothe competitors), Kingsland Primary School Sports Day was in full swingthis week, and it looked like everyone was having at least as much fun as in

a major world event - possibly more! I was leading a school assembly at theend of the week, and we thought about competitions, and how much funthey are, and how they can bring out the best in people.

Perversely though, competitions can also bring out the worst in us. There isa lurking desire in all of us to succeed on our own, without any help. And we forget that actually were not on our own in life were part of acommunity.

Even when we are in a competition, the very best competitions are actuallyabout celebrating community too. Think about what we saw at theOlympics two years ago - we will have forgotten who actually won medalslong before we forget the sense of unity, purpose and welcome that the whole event brought.

Well be celebrating the Beltane Festival this coming week, which afterthree years Im still thoroughly enjoying. There are few things more fiercely

competitive than the question of who gets to be in the Beltane Court - andthe result is that those chosen have a huge responsibility to ensure that thecommunity is enhanced, and not damaged, as a result.

In case you worry that Im just moralising here, bear in mind thatcommunity is Gods idea. Everything from Genesis 2 (it is not good for theman to be alone...) through to the early church in Acts 2, who worshipped together, pooled their money

and possessions, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity. Hmmm... now I wonder what wecould do to build a bit of community... I a n

Dont miss this yearsBaptist Assembly in Scotland!30th October - 1st November 2014

Ask anyone whos been to the Assembly over the last few years, and theyll tell you its a first -class event. There are excellentspeakers, and lots of opportunities to make new friends and to

hear what God is doing not just in churches the length and breadth of Scotland, but right across the world.

In this important year for Scotland, Assembly will be considering theplace of Baptist communities within our nation. What do we anticipate when we pray Your Kingdom come? What influence do we expect to

have in the shaping of the future of our nation? How can we influence thehealth of Scotland for the better, encourage our communities to supportone another and engage with areas such as education and social justicethrough the mission and ministry of the local church? Speakers include Andy Hawthorne OBE, evangelist, author and leader of The MessageTrust, Iain Macaulay Senior Pastor, Queens Park Baptist Church, Glas-

gow, and John Upton President of the Baptist World Alliance . ForPeebles Baptists one of this years highlights will be seeing our pastor,Ian, receiving his accreditation with the Union.

Whats happening tothe magazine? The eagle-eyed among you will have noticed that this magazine is several weeks later than normal coming out, and also that its covering (or tryingto cover!) both June and July. Ok, we confess, that partly just because wedidnt get it out on time... But it does actually tie in nicely with plans tochange the frequency of the magazine, from monthly to every twomonths. Producing a monthly magazine (as well as all the other forms of

communication we have such as the weekly supplement, the website, theFacebook page, and the noticeboards) is a significant amount of work, and well be trying the new reduced frequency for a while to see how itgoes.

The next magazine will therefore be the August/September edition, when we will welcome Morag back into the editors chair after her break to work on a production of a different nature entirely!

We would, as ever, love to receive contributions for the next magazine, which should be emailed to [email protected] byJuly 12th.

The Wintours would verymuch like to thank thechurch for...
