June 2014

World Cancer Day 2014World Cancer Day unites the world’s population in the fight against cancer. This truly global event happens every year on February 4, and it aims to save millions of preventable deaths by raising awareness and education about the disease, pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action. World Cancer Day originated in 2000 at the first World Summit Against Cancer, which was held in Paris. The first World Cancer Day campaign was created in 2005 and will celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2015.

Building on the success of the 2013 campaign, World Cancer Day 2014 focused on reducing stigma and dispelling myths around the disease under the tagline Debunk the myths!. Greater awareness and education about cancer can lead to policy development and implementation, along with positives change at the individual, community, regional and national levels across the continuum of cancer care.

The campaign framed and challenged four key myths that are common in different cultures and countries around the globe:

• We don't need to talk about cancer

• There are no signs or symptoms of cancer

• There is nothing I can do about cancer

• I don't have the right to cancer care

World Cancer Day is an initiative of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), a leading international non-governmental organisation that unites the cancer community to reduce the global cancer burden, to promote greater equity, and to integrate cancer control into the world health and development agenda. UICC is committed to ensuring that year-on-year, World Cancer Day appears in the global agenda as a key milestone during which the world unites under one united message to stress the importance of the fight against cancer. World Cancer Day 2014 generated an incredible pick-up and was tremendously successful thanks to the engagement of all UICC members, partners and various stakeholders around the world.

Amongst many key highlights and figures, the following showcase the impact we had on this global awareness Day: Worldcancerday.org generated 12 million hits (a six-fold increase over last year); accumulated a total of 365,827,287 social media impressions and there were 8.4 billion opportunities to see, hear or read about World Cancer Day.

The systematic reviews undertaken by the MASCC/ISOO Oral Care Study Group in 2010 are currently being updated by Study Group members to ensure that guidelines for best management of cancer therapy-induced oral complications are based on the most current evidence. The systematic reviews are underpinned by a robust and transparent protocol published by Brennan and colleagues in Supportive Care in Cancer 2010 18(8):979-984. Reviews are being conducted by multidisciplinary groups from many countries. For example, the dysgeusia systematic review update is being undertaken by MASCC members from Canada, Australia, Singapore and the Netherlands, representing the disciplines of Dietetics, Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery. All systematic review updates (which include Viral Infections, Fungal Infections, Trismus, Osteoradionecrosis of the Jaw, Jaw Necrosis Secondary to Antiresorptive Medications, Salivary Gland Dysfunction/Xerostomia, Oral Pain and Oral GVHD) will continue across 2014 with preliminary findings shared at the Annual Meeting in Miami.

Pictured is Allan Hovan who is co-ordinating the dysgeusia update with Anna Boltong, Gini Jarvis, Judith Raber-Durlacher, Karis Cheng, Tanya Rouleau and Stacey Carter.

World Cancer Day 2014 (continued)Many activities took place around the world led by UICC members, partners, governments, corporations, notable individuals, UN agencies and other stakeholders, including:

• The American Cancer Society partnered with Chevrolet and ran a social media-led fundraising campaign which was launched at the SuperBowl,

• The French Cancer Institute (INCa) launched their third National Cancer Control Plan with the presence of the French President;

• Mathiwos Wandu Ye-Ethiopia Cancer Society and the wife of Ethiopian Prime Minister, Her Excellency Mrs Roman Tesfaye, brought together the country’s leaders and announced the creation of a National Cancer Control Committee;

• The Asociación Mexicana de Lucha contra el Cáncer along with its partners distributed informative brochures of cancer prevention and early detection in each of the 28 metro stations of Mexico City, which services over 5 million people per day;

• Link to Life, a non-profit cancer support centre in Mauritius used World Cancer Day as an opportunity to inaugurate its first ultrasound machine, which was generously donated by one of their sponsors. These are just a few of many ways individuals and organisations around the world got engaged to mark World Cancer Day 2014.

The 2015 World Cancer Day campaign is currently being put together and will be publicly shared in the third quarter of this year. Meanwhile the 2014 campaign is still available on worldcancerday.org.

MASCC Oral Care Study Group Updates 2010 Systematic Reviews

Meet a new MASCC Member, C. Suzanne DrodgeI am a Radiation Oncology Fellow at the Cross Cancer Institute, Edmonton, Alberta in Canada. I am involved in supportive care through a personal interest in palliative care, which developed throughout medical school and continued during residency training in Radiation Oncology. As a fellow, I am now involved with the palliative radiation oncology rapid access clinic at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton, Alberta. This clinic is dedicated primarily to patients with brain metastases and symptomatic bone metastases, and involves a multidisciplinary consult with radiation therapy, nursing, pharmacy, and radiation oncology; radiation simulation, planning and treatment delivery. After completion of this fellowship my clinical posting will entail starting a rapid access palliative radiation oncology clinic in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

A positive experience in palliative radiation oncology, with opportunities for collaborative medicine and research, motivated my application for membership with MASCC. Optimal patient care, being the highest priority, can be achieved through continued education, policies, research and involvement with organizations, such as MASCC. Membership with this organization will, as a Radiation Oncologist, provide lifelong opportunities for collaboration and learning at a multi-national level.

MASCC collaborated with the European Society for Medical Oncology to co-lead the annual 2-day CME credited training course for over 250 delegates in Vienna in March 2014. Presentations were made by prominent health care professionals and MASCC representatives Jean Klastersky and Matti Aapro, as well as MASCC members Dirk Schrijvers, Mario Dicato, and Heinz Ludwig. In his opening remarks, course co-ordinator and MASCC Board Member Matti Aapro encouraged participants to visit the MASCC booth on site, consider membership of MASCC, and attend the 2014 Annual Meeting in Miami. MASCC exhibited free copies of our journal, Miami flyers, MOATT guide, application forms, MASCC brochures, and various reference books in supportive care in cancer.
