Workshop Reports
A few workshops ago John Perez brought his “New” laptop in because he was having problems. It was decided that the best coarse of action would be to do a re-install or a recovery. But as John did not get any recovery disks with the machine, we tried to create them for John. But all we could get was a message stating that the Recovery Discs had already been created. John did not do them in fact until he was told he was unaware that he had to create them himself. After several attempts to create them we discovered that they had already been created several months prior to when John purchased the Laptop. Because it was still under warranty we stopped work on it and suggested to John that he take it back to where he brought it from. On doing so he found out in fact it was not a new laptop but a refurbished one. After a few “Not Happy Jan” moments the company who makes that brand gave the okay to the shop where it was purchased to supply John with new machine.
For those who are unaware what companies are now doing is not suppling copies of your Windows or other Software discs, this is cost cutting for them. So what they do is put the Discs in an encrypted format on the Hard Drive with a link or instructions on how to create your own discs for backup purposes.
Matt Booth’s computer would not recognise his scanner. Leonie had a look and found the scanner appeared to be working okay. But as Matt did not bring his scanner software with him, Leonie suggested that he un-install the software and reinstall it again.
Jan Hodgson wanted a free antivirus program installed. Dennis installed Grisoft’s AVG. Dennis also installed Malwarebytes anti -malware software. Why Dennis also installed anti malware software as well as anti virus, is for a couple of reasons. One antivirus software does not catch every type bug. Two not all nasties are viruses. For instance Malware is short for Malicious Software. Another type is called PUP Potentially Unwanted Programs. These types usually get installed via

other programs, this is why we strongly suggest that when installing all software you choose a custom install and try see what the program is installing, deselect any add-on programs. Another way we get these types of programs is via the internet, we inadvertently click on something like an ad etc. or lured to another site.
Brian Mathews had a mouse problem, it would behave erratically. It was rather old and as Brian also had a wireless mouse we elected to use that one. We also slowed the click speed down making it easier to double left click. Brian also wanted his contacts from his online Yahoo account merged with his Outlook address book. From Yahoo we exported his contacts to CSV file which is just Comma Separated Text file. Once we saved the file to his Hard Drive we then ran Outlook and imported into his contacts on his hard drive.
George Downs date and time was out of sync. Every time George started his computer the date and time was wrong. Most common cause of this is there is a small battery inside the computer on the Motherboard. Once you replace the battery you need to reset them in the BIOS. George also had some malware on his machine so we installed Malwarebytes software and cleaned his system.
Walter Lintvelt had some unwanted messages popping up. Jim also installed Malwarebytes and ran it over Walters computer. Jim additionally installed Ccleaner, Ccleaner is a registry cleaner, if used wisely it can clean up any erroneously files or links which have been left behind after a program has uninstalled.
Pat Lean wanted to know how to have two items or two programs running each on half of her screen. On Window XP you need to up on file or program and size

Leap into motion
The Leap Motion Controller is a small USB device that plugs into your computer.
It tracks both hands and all ten fingers as they move through the open space between you and your computer, letting you interact with over 140 apps built for motion control.
Using LED lights and camera sensors, the Leap Motion Controller scans an area of roughly 8-cubic feet above the device.
The special software detects your hands and fingers and translates the data into information for your computer.
As the Leap Motion software evolves, so does your experience.
https://www.leapmotion.com/
A little bit of magic.
A lot of freedom. All that wide open space between you and your computer is now just for hands and fingers.
The Leap Motion Controller senses almost every little move they make, and every big one, too.
Technically speaking, it’s 8 cubic feet of interactive, three-dimensional space. But you can say it’s magic.

Internet tales
What plane is flying over your house?
Have you ever wondered where that plane flying over head is going and
what type of aircraft? Every day you see planes in the sky, sometimes
very high, with or without con-trails. We often ask ourselves these
questions: What type of plane, Airbus A320,330, Boeing 727, 747 or
some other manufacturer. Where did it come from, where is it going,
what altitude, what speed, what airline, etc..
Well, now you can see all this information instantly on your laptop
screen. I just watched the plane whose vapor trail I could see over head,
on my laptop, and was blown away by all the information and also the
view.
You are also going to be totally blown away when you see how many
aircraft are flying in your area. I can now see why an air traffic
controller is one very, very busy person. Here is a note to help you get
more out of your visit to this site.
These are all the aircraft in the air right now. In the left hand
column, there is a box called "planes". The number in the box is the
number of aircraft airborne. This view is what the various airport air
traffic management people see for planning purposes. Some additional
tricks: Drag the map to take you to the area you want to view. To view
your region or town, you can zoom in by tapping with your
mouse. On the map you will see all the planes in the air. When you
click on a airplane, on the left screen you will get all the
information related to; airline, plane type, air speed, altitude in
real time that is re-calculated every 10 seconds. On some you can also
click on view from the cockpit.

Australian Energy Regulator
Comparing energy offers is easy with our energy price comparison web-
site, Energy Made Easy www.energymadeeasy.gov.au Wherever you live
in Australia, you can use the website; however, the energy price com-
parison feature is only available in states and territories where the Na-
tional Energy Retail Law has commenced (at this stage Tasmania, the
Australian Capital Territory, South Australia and New South Wales).
This feature is available to residential and small business customers. In
Tasmania, however, only small business electricity customers can
choose their retailer. These are therefore the only Tasmanian offers on
Energy Made Easy. If this changes so that other types of Tasmanian cus-
tomers can choose their retailer, this will be reflected on the website.
Energy Made Easy allows users to compare all generally available gas
and electricity offers, including details such as GreenPower options or
solar feed-in tariffs, discounts and incentives, and key terms and condi-
tions. This should make it much simpler for you to find an offer which
suits your needs. You can use Energy Made Easy to find a retailer for a
new connection, or to check how your current retailer compares.
If you are in a state or territory that has not commenced the Retail Law,
you can still visit Energy Made Easy for general information about how
to understand and compare energy offers.
Energy Made Easy also offers a bill benchmark tool that allows users to
compare how much electricity their household uses compared to other
similar-sized households in their area. All households across Australia
can use this tool.
This fact sheet explains how you can get the most out of the Energy
Made Easy website.

First Aid
One - on – One Help For those of you who are “Newbies” to computers and would like to
know a bit more about your resident “beast”.
Running a beginner’s class in a club situation is rather difficult because
everyone is at a different stage of computer knowledge.
So, at the Workshop on the 4th Sunday of each
month, one or two of our more experienced members
will be available to help out.
Just ask at the door and put your name down.
Just a reminder that there are first aid facilities available at the meet-ings. Just contact one of the Committee if necessary.
