Taking time outAs some of you will know, I have recently returned from having a three-month sabbatical, which I took between Christmas and Easter. Clergy can take a sabbatical ten years after their ordination and then every following seven years. Not working for a long period of time is actually quite difficult to do, although the benefits are many. I must admit that work did interrupt my time off on a few occasions but most of the time I was able to let go.I began by going on an eight day silent retreat. The silence gave me time and space to withdraw from normal everyday work and life and reflect on how I could spend the rest of the three months. I did some theological reading, principally around prayer, spirituality and personality, and hope to be putting that to good use in the near future.I spent quality time with family and friends, one of whom I had not seen since our wedding day in 1977. It was amazing how the years fell away as we recalled good times together as young girls. My sister took me on a knitting course to learn a new skill, knitting double, which is knitting a reversible pattern. It produces a thick, warm garment and is used in Scandinavian countries for scarves, hats, gloves etc. My best friend came to stay for a week, and we had a good catch-up with what was happening for our children – and their families. We did quite a few jigsaws and drank quite a lot of gin! All in all I had a very good time. There are many times in the Gospels where we are told that Jesus takes himself away from the crowd to pray. Sometimes he takes a few of his closest disciples to a secluded spot to be together, away from the demands of the people. Finding time to recharge the batteries was obviously important to Jesus, and he sets us a good example.I know that it’s not possible for everyone to be able to take time out – especially not the very generous sabbatical leave that the church has enabled me to have. However, I do believe that time apart is extremely important, and even if we can only manage fifteen minutes at the end of the day to reflect on the events of the day, we will benefit from those

4th JuneOn Saturday, 4th June, there will be a brief and informal service to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. It will take place on the Hill – at the mound where the chapel of the Norman Keep once stood. We will leave from Elmley Church gate at 2 pm. Depending on weather, it is a semi-demanding walk. There will be some transport for those who need it.
When we reach the Keep at about 2.45 p.m., David Phillips will give a short talk on the Norman Castle. There will then be a simple service of some 20 minutes. After this, for those who wish to stay, there will be a picnic. (Bring your own.)
With thanks to Jamie Hobbs for giving us access to his land for this.

precious moments. If you are able to set aside a day or half day now and again to be silent, to walk or read or pray, I am sure that you will find it helps you get things in perspective, and enables you to return to daily life with renewed energy.May God bless you all.

Breakfast Club
Castle Club
Starting 23rd May
Children can arrive at school from 8 a.m. and have a healthy breakfast
each day of the school week. Activities will then be available before the
school day begins at 8.50 a.m.
After school our Castle Club will be open from 3 p.m. to 5.30.p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and
Thursdays (and daily from September 2016). Our normal variety of after school clubs will still be
running, after which our Castle Club will provide a healthy snack and the chance for the children to
unwind or carry on with other activities until home time – parents will be able to collect
their children at a time appropriate for the individual family.
We are very excited to announce that from 23rd May 2016 we are launching our own Breakfast Club at Elmley Castle First School, to be run daily.
For more information, contact:

Barn DanceA big thankyou to everyone who bought tickets to the Barn Dance on 6th of May. We had approximately 100 turn up and a really good time was had by all, dancing to The Cats Whiskers Band. There was many a missed turn and many a laugh, which made for a very enjoyable night. It was especially good to see so many children in the early part of the evening. We raised about £1100 for church funds.
A special thankyou to the team who worked so hard setting the event up, and clearing up afterwards.
Gill Tallis, Penny Spiller, Margot Archer, Derek Rowley Thanks and congratulations to Gill, Penny, Margot, and Derek for organising such a successful event.
EditorLondon MarathonA big thankyou to all those who supported and pledged money for Michael Barnes running the London Marathon. With money still trickling in, Michael has raised nearly £2,000 for Elmley Castle First School.

Monday ClubWe all had a fabulous time at Stanway House, home of the Earl of Wemyss. Lorraine’s guided tour was exceptional and made it all come alive for us – we were actually encouraged to sit on the chairs! She later switched on the fountain for us. It is 300 feet high and is the highest gravity fountain in the world. A magical end to the day. Many thanks to all our volunteer drivers for making the trip possible.
On Monday 6th June Tony Caldwell and friends are back with us for A Bit of Fun, a humorous and musical afternoon. 2.30 p.m. Elmley Castle Village Hall

position of the inhabitants enabled them to sustain themselves. The Iron Age occupation of the hill was not defined by or limited to the area of the hillfort, rather the hillfort followed from a wider older colonisation of the entire area. The inner rampart constructed about 200 bc is a rock-built bank packed with earth apparently once contained within timber frames. Pottery from within the rampart fill is tempered with feldspathic hornblende-rich rock fragments from Malvern Hill kilns confirming occupation of the site prior to the construction of its defences. DNA analysis of teeth from the human corpses confirms them to be native people originating in the area of Bredon Hill and possibly with living descendants.
The landscape then was somewhat different from what we know now. The inner rampart fill contains shells of the shade-demanding copse snail Arianta arbustorum, which on Bredon Hill is now confined to woodlands, copses and adjacent mature thorn scrub. So it is likely that the plateau during the Iron Age was a mosaic of clearings, fields, pastures and stockades intermixed with developing scrub woodland. Such low level management enhances biodiversity, and one Iron Age inhabitant which survives to this day in very small numbers is the specialised snail-eating beetle Ablattaria laevigata. This insect is wholly intolerant of land use intensification and is one of many examples of Bredon Hill’s surviving links with prehistory.
P. F. Whitehead
Further afieldThe countryside: The end of the nativesAbout 2,100 years ago, the occupants of the Iron Age encampment, Kemerton Camp, on the summit of Bredon Hill, were unceremoniously butchered – evidently as an act of tribal warfare. It has been suggested that this was a result of an increasing human population in a country divided into sixteen tribal groups.
The British Iron Age spans the period beginning in 800 bc and ending in ad 43 under the influence of Rome. As the Iron Age progressed, people became more warlike – as is confirmed by the dated archaeological weapon record. It is assumed that the massacre that ended the prehistoric occupation of the encampment was the work of the Belgae, a nation of tribes that occupied northern Europe and who became increasingly restless as the Roman legions moved inexorably through France. At Kemerton Camp the objective was annihilation, evidenced by the resulting pile of dismembered bodies comprising young males, a few females and one or two children eventually scavenged by rodents, dogs or wolves. The camp remained unoccupied until Saxon times, but that is another yet more mysterious story.
Iron Age settlement extended all around the hill, but Kemerton Camp remained special, and probably hosted Druids who regarded it and its ‘Amber Stone’ as sacred. As the climate deteriorated generally, the privileged

Next issuePlease send all contributions to John Seely: email: [email protected] post: 11, Parkwood, Elmley Castle phone: 01386 710301 Please send articles by email as attachments, preferably in MS Word. Articles should be no longer than 375 words, and may be edited for style or length. Adverts for local events should occupy no more than half a page. If you send me a PDF of an A4 poster, because of the proportions, one of two things will happen:• it will be reduced to a quarter of a page,• or it will be rearranged to fit into a half page and you may not like the
result. If in doubt, please contact me ahead of the deadline.
The deadline for the next issue is 11th June.
