Note of Inspiration

At least once a week, I receive an email, handwritten note, or KUDO from a student acknowledging a faculty member. I share these messages during our Faculty Coun-cil on a monthly basis. This month, I want to share with all of you an excerpt from a recent handwritten note from a student to a faculty teaching in our undergraduate programs.

Dear Faculty,I want to thank you for all that you have done for me. I remember meeting with you during class with tears in my eyes and you looked at me and said that you believed in me. That meant so much to me. You are the professor who I learned to listen during lectures and you made learning come alive! You asked us to achieve great things, to study harder and longer, and to overcome what we didn’t realize we could do. That impact meant so much to me! I have not only been inspired to be the best student I can be, but have been inspired to believe in myself. You saw my potential and it helped me light a fire. I have so much respect for you and am so thankful for you. I will always ask the best of myself and set my dreams and goals high!

Stacy Collier, BSN (‘97), MSN (‘00), is no stranger to hard work. As Chief Nursing Officer for Ker-shawHealth Medical Center, Col-lier’s workday starts around 6:30 in the morning, if not earlier. Her days, filled with meetings, rounds in the hospital and nursing units and of-fice time, end around 7:00 in the evening. Despite long 12-hour days, Collier exudes energy and passion in her work.

“My motto is to have good days and better days, and that there are no bad days!” she said.

Faculty and Staff Notes

The College of Nursing is helping to build S.C.’s nursing workforce, but the college’s reach is also global, improving health care around the world.Deb McQuilkin, the college’s director of global initiatives, works with the USC Glob-al Health Initiative, which includes faculty members from several schools and depart-ments participating in various international educational, service and research programs.

The 2015-2016 Cockcroft Fellows project “Bridging the Tran-sition to Practice: Identifying Qualities and Skills Necessary for New Nurses,” authored by Andrea Coyle, Joy Huntington, Rob-in Matutina, and Kari Mau, has been granted funding through Sigma Theta Tau Gamma Omicron At Large Chapter and has been accepted for poster presentation at the Lowcountry Nursing Research Conference.

Dr. Helen Mulhern Halasz’s article, “Advis-ing Strategies for Grad-uate Student Degree Progression,” has been published on Academic Advising Today.

Dr. Carolyn Harmon has been elected to serve on the board of directors for the American Nurs-ing Informatics Associa-tion (ANIA) as the Edu-cation Director.

Research Spotlight: Beverly Baliko, PhD, RN Associate Professor

Dr. Beverly Baliko is currently in the penultimate semester of a 3-year SAMHSA grant to train residents and graduate students to use Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) as a strategy to reach patients in their practices who may use substances at risky levels.(SBIRT) is an evidence-based technique originally developed for use in primary care settings to a) identify persons who have, or who are at risk for, alcohol and substance use disorders, b) utilize motivational interviewing techniques to conduct brief interventions, and c) provide re-ferral to ongoing treatment if needed. Faculty from medicine, nursing, social work and rehab counseling collaborated to develop online didactic training modules that students use to pre-pare for hands-on practice. In nursing, these modules are integrated into the graduate health

assessment course. Dr. Baliko and Dr. Mary Boyd, an Associate Professor in the College of Nursing, use virtual technology or on-campus meetings to provide opportunities for students to practice and demonstrate their competencies. As of Fall 2015, they had trained 112 NP students, and should reach around 200 by the end of the grant (45 students this semester). The training is well-received and NP student evaluation outcomes (knowledge, performance and satisfaction) are equal to or higher than those of other disciplines. As an extension of this project, Dr. Baliko and her team have submitted another grant to include clinical supervision and continue to expand training opportunities in the community.

Dr. Kathrene Bren-dell’s abstract, “Neuro-science & Psychotherapy: Implications for Prac-tice,” has been accepted for podium presentation at American Psychiat-ric Nurses Association (APNA) 30th Annual Conference this October in Hartford, Connecticut.

College of Nursing faculty participated in a CO awareness community event at the Lan-caster Fire Department.

Dr. Sue Heiney’s ar-ticle, “Fatalism Revis-ited: Further Psychomet-ric Testing Across Two Studies,” has been pub-lished in the Journal of Religion and Health. Read it Here.

Professor Lydia Zager and Dr. Karen Worthy presented“Patient Safety Requires Concept Mastery” at the QSEN Forum 2016 in San Antonio, Texas.

They won the “People’s Choice Award” for the poster which focused on incorporating a concept based curriculum as an innovative approach to assist students in moving from memorization of information to long-term retention to provide safe and effective patient care.

Dr. Patrick Hickey is a Clinical Associate Professor in the College of Nursing and the Faculty Principal for the Capstone Scholars Program where he oversees over 1500 freshmen/sopho-mores.
