TRANSCRIPT
As I write, the Cubs have the best record in baseball, 27-9, a winning percentage of .750, their best record for a 35-game stretch since 1906. Cubs fans are not an optimistic lot, having been severely disappointed for more than a hundred years, but the curse has to be broken someday, right? This year we at FPC have followed the advice Joe Maddon gives the Cubs players: we have been focusing on the fundamentals, learning and practicing the basics. We have been learning again to “Respect 90!” (Running hard to first base every time we hit the ball, even when we think we have no chance.) Our hope is that a renewed attention to the fundamentals will allow us to unbind the gospel, to reverse the curse and live such exciting lives in the Spirit that others will come to know and believe the Good News that God loves us.
As our series on the 10 Commandments (fundamentals!) comes to an end and we look toward Father’s Day, I am reminded of the important role that fathers play in teaching the fundamentals to their children--and I am also reminded just how often fathers are underrepresented or absent from church. On any given Sunday at FPC, the percentage of attendees who are men is 40% (January-May 2016). That is only marginally better than the 39% that has been reported for years as the average across all denominations in the U.S.
What is it with men and the church? Even those who call themselves Christian regularly report being bored by church. Those who do attend worship services often do so out of a feeling of obligation, to fulfill their role as a dad or husband. Some folks swear that it is hormonal (testosterone being somehow antithetical to the gospel), an aversion to the soft, wimpy emphasis on love and relationships at church. As Frederica Mathewes-Green and Tom Long and others have pointed out, there is an exception to this rule about men and church among Christians who are Eastern Orthodox. The reason, some have speculated, is that Orthodoxy is more "challenging" than Presbyterianism; it is more serious, difficult, and demanding. Perhaps what people want and need, what both men and women today yearn for, is “more costly, demanding, life-changing discipleship.”
So, what do you say we “challenge” our men to step up to the plate and leave their all on the field for the team that follows Jesus this Father’s Day? Grace and Peace,
Pastor Greg

There are no Circle Meetings (except for the Prayer Circle) the months of June and July! Have a wonderful summer and we will see you in August.
CIRCLES
Circles are small group opportunities for women to attend Bible Study and enjoy fellowship (see schedule below).
PROGRAMS
There are a variety of topics discussed during our meetings. Past dis-cussions have included different types of prayer, Christmas crafts and music, healthy cooking, seasonal flowers, and the history of the church. Join PW to see what is coming this year!
SERVICE PROJECTS Service Projects for PW have included FUEL, Empty Bowls, Safe House (battered women’s shelter), special offerings, and more.
HOW DO I LEARN MORE? A PW handbook is available through the church office which lists the programs planned, some history of the group, Board Members and con-tact information. Also look for monthly updates in the newsletter.
Page 5
Every woman attending First Presbyterian Church is automatically a member of PW and is welcome to attend all functions. Guests are also welcome. PW meets Monthly, Au-gust -April, for interesting programs, services, and fellowship. August and April are dinner meetings and the remainder are 12:30 luncheons, held on the 4th Monday of each month. The meals are ca-tered (10.00) and sign-ups are on the bulletin board or through the church office.
PW SERVICE PROJECTS Service projects for PW have included *F.U.E.L., Empty Bowls, Safe House (battered women’s shelter), special offerings, and more. *F.U.E.L.-a community wide program in all public schools. The program provides bags of food to take home, on Fridays during the school year, with children who will not have enough food for the weekend. Many churches and civic groups support the program. Our church provides 20 bags of food for Byrns Darden Elementary School each week.

Session has approved a non member wedding policy and application. Both are on file in the church office and will be available on the web site. This was a wonderful first step in broadening the use of our beautiful sanctuary and education building. Thank you to all who worked so hard to make it happen. ~HISTORICAL PRESERVATION COMMITTEE~
The Historical Preservation Committee is beginning a new project of performing interviews with people and/or families who have been members of FPC for 35+ years! Do you fit into this catego-ry? We would love to talk to you! We are interested in your fondest church memories, areas where you have been active, etc. If you are interested in participating, please contact Rhonda Ba-nasiak at [email protected] or at (931) 980-8184.
We are excited that Stephen Ministry training will be underway this August! Training will begin August 22 and go through early November. Our ministers will be commissioned and be ready to go before Christmas! We are still accepting applications if you are interested in joining us. Ste-phen Ministry gives lay caregivers the training to provide high-quality, confidential, Christ-centered care to people who are experiencing difficulties or major life changes. We want people who enjoy talking to others, like being helpful to people in need, and want to share the love of Christ to be Stephen Ministers. We are especially seeking men as Stephen Ministry recommends women minister to women and men minister to men. We also want to know if you are aware of anyone who could use a Stephen Minister here towards the end of the year or the beginning of next year. Please feel free to contact any of our congregation’s Stephen Leaders (Rhonda Bana-siak, Jeanne Bettencourt, Bessie Costanza, or Sue Reynolds) with any concerns or questions.

~MISSIONS COMMITTEE~
CALLS FOR VOLUNTEERS!! The Missions Committee is working hard, and we can use volunteers!! Sign up sheets are on the bulletin board near the church office. Please prayerfully consider participating in some of the following activities: HABITAT FOR HUMANITY: Carpenters are needed to hang doors and windows and in-stall interior trim. John Waddle will be leading the team. Sign up on the bulletin board! Work is expected to take place the first week or so in June!! PRESBYTERIAN LEGAL ASSISTANCE NETWORK "PLAN": Receptionists are needed to welcome and register clients. Legal Aid Society has an attorney at the AOC on the 2nd & 4th Wednesdays, and we have a church attorney volunteer at the AOC on the 1st & 3rd Saturdays. The time is 10:30-noon on those days. Sign up on the bulletin board! VBS HOSTS FOR SUDANESE TEENS: Last year the Sudanese teens were great help-ers during VBS. However, this year, their parents work 2nd shift and the kids can't partici-pate. We would like to find 2 or 3 families willing to host 1 or 2 students (13-15 year olds) for the week of VBS (June 26-30). The teens want to work in our VBS program from 6-8 each evening, and we would love to have them, but we need a place for them to stay! Sign up on the bulletin board if you are interested! ARTS for HEARTS: This new community outreach, providing opportunities for the home-less and struggling to express themselves in art, is going to be housed in the AOC. Volun-teer artists will set the dates and be there to guide the clients. We would like to have a vol-unteer from FPC there, too, to welcome the folks, and unlock the doors, help with set up and clean up, etc. as needed. Right now there is not a definite schedule, but the work shift will be from 10:30-1:30. This will happen once or twice per month. If you are interested in helping one time only or on-going basis, please sign up on bulletin board! BIBLE STUDY for the community: Dan Aiken is organizing a weekly Bible study in the AOC for the community. However, he cannot do this alone! If you are interested in provid-ing Bibles to give to participants (we plan to have small New Testaments to give to each person), teaching one time or regularly, or providing other support, please sign up on the bulletin board! We hope to get this started this summer. The exact days and times will be set by Dan and the group of volunteers.
