Shoot report:

• The 2016 NMLRA 1000 Point Pistol Shoot was held outside May 7th & 8th at the Mat Valley Sportsman Range. Mike Kelly officiated and was Range Safety Officer. Attending Saturday were Mike Kelly, Bear Kelsey, Rob Bargewell, Calvin Pope, Pat Reed, Keith Bayha, Mike Deland, Keith & Mary Mathis. The scores will be posted after verification and classification of shooters from NMLRA. • The Monthly Pistol Shoot on Tuesday evening, May 10th was attended by Cal Pope, Bear Kelsey, Martin Killough, Pat Reed, Steve Anderson, and Mike Kelly. Mike Kelly officiated and was RSO on the 50yd. outdoor range. All shooters didn’t shoot the same type of pistol, nor did they shoot the same distances: 25 Yd. 50 Yd. Total Score

Cal Pope (revolver) 66 66 Bear Kelsey (percussion) 73 21 94 Martin Killough (revolver) 139 139 Rob Bargewell (percussion) 85 41 126 Pat Reid (flintlock) 73 50 123 Steve Anderson (percussion) 132xx 132xx Mike Kelly (percussion) 145x 145x Mike Kelly was the highest scorer for the twenty shots (ten each at a single bull target) with Steve Anderson second and Martin Killough third. All shooters did well, but there was a discrepancy with the degree of difficulty each individual shot, distance wise or type of pistol. Mike Kelly shot all shots at 50 yards and is the undisputed winner. • Pat Reed updated us on our “Postal Shoot” results, in that we placed 3rd, out of the six teams in March, and 4th in April. He also forewarned us, on our May Monthly Rifle Shoot (9:00 am, Saturday May 21st, at MVS outdoor range) to practice shooting left handed prior as we will have one target to be shot left handed. He iterated that you never know if on a hunt, or sometime, we may have an injury to our right hand and have to shoot left handed. Note our fore fathers lives often depended on them being able to shoot with either hand!

Old Business:

• Keith Mathis reported on the McKinley Mountainman exhibit at the Houston Gun Show 23-24 April in the Big Lake Lions Recreation Center, and that he had purchased the sales table for next year’s gun show in order to maintain the same spot and club tables. He was told there was no guarantee unless the spot was secure this year for next year. Our sales table for next year was $50 and is paid, with a receipt. Calvin Pope chaired the committee for the presentation with Keith and Mary Mathis, Jeff Binegar, Pat Reed, and Howard Delo helping man the tables. Only $8 was made in commissions and one adult hawk and one spare handle sold from the sales table but many people stopped and chatted because we had items for sale. It is still a benefit to the club and its members even though the table did not pay for itself.

• Rob Bargewell reported on the progress setting up the NMLRA Alaska Territorial Shoot at Ft. Wick this year. First we are having another work party at Rob’s Monday May 23rd, to build five more loading benches and stools for the shooting tables already built. Attendance is encouraged as it was limited when we had the work party to build the shooting benches. • Rob also asked who could bring portable popup shelters in case of rain at the Territorial Shoot. • President Calvin Pope, suggested we raise the aggregate fee at Territorial to help cover expenses we are occurring to sponsor this shoot. Discussion equivocated the expense of the shoot at Upper Susitna range was one of the main reasons we decided to change the venue to Ft. Wick! No decision was came to however all agreed we may have to raise the daily shooting fee to cover expenses but we should wait until a closer date of the shoot to acquire all expenses before we make that decision. Aggregate fees are set by NMLRA, but shooting fees are left to the club or range sponsoring the shoot. • Rob reported on target status for Territorial, and stated he had no choice but to order targets from NMLRA and have them sent by the US Postal Service because of their size and weight. He reported we needed $169.00 worth of targets to complete our shoot and resupply our stock, however the shipping was $369.00 via the post office. UPS shipping was going to be $520 so the post office was the best choice. Several suggested were given by those present at the meeting, and it was agreed we should look into the possibility of us getting targets printed in Alaska to eliminate shipping. Bear volunteered to check prices and Rob was going to make sure Friendship (NMLRA Board of Directors) allowed us to do so and still be official. Anyway, it was too late to complete this process and Rob had already ordered the targets for this year. Research will give an idea if we can have them printed here next year. • Rob also requested volunteers for another work party Tuesday May 31st, the day after Memorial Weekend Rendezvous, to spread gravel for the Territorial shooting line at Ft. Wick. Rob stated the gravel he priced was considerably cheaper than the $1100 he quoted previously. His latest quote was $640, $140 per 10yd. load with 4 dump truck loads of ¾ minus needed. Jeff Binegar questioned that we had decided at the last meeting to delay putting gravel at Ft. Wick Territorial this year to see how our sponsoring the shoot went. Rob was in the hospital during the April meeting and wasn’t notified of that discussion. There was nothing in the Newsletter of that decision or a vote taken so President Calvin Pope pushed we should have the work party and proceed with the gravel as we had voted to do previously. Members attending had mixed opinions of the importance of a level gravel shooting line, but without a solid opposition it was decided to continue with gravel as we had previously voted to do. Do to the controversy and the scheduled date of the work party, volunteers were scarce for the project! • Youth Day at Birchwood as always is the first weekend of June and show of hands for volunteers to teach the kids to shoot muzzle loaders was requested. Rob Bargewell, Calvin Pope, Jeff Binegar, Pat Reed, Jim Anderson, and possibly Bob Lochman volunteered. Roger King was not present at the meeting but he was to be contacted as he has always helped in the past. A decision was made to change our target system this year from the colored water bottle targets to hanging gongs and other metal targets. Some plastic jugs were to be brought as backup if needed. Anyone else wishing to volunteer show contact Calvin Pope, 907-232-4651. Keith Mathis agreed to supply six pounds of black powder and 600 percussion caps to supplement the supplies left over from last years. Rob Bargewell was to inventory our carryover patches, lead balls, and cleaning materials to determine what supplies were need to put on our demonstration this year. More volunteers are needed as it is a daylong event and fairly continuous with very little breaks, so with six shooting stations it nice to be able to trade off instructors and take a break once in a while. So come and join us Saturday, June 5th, at Birchwood (Range) Recreational Park for the NRA Youth Day.

New Business:

• Rob Bargewell and Bear Kelsey’s respective churches sponsor the “Trail Life” organization similar to Boys Scouts. They have requested to attend one day of our State Rendezvous and participate in our agenda, or have us teach them muzzle loading. Consensus of those attending the meeting was we need more details. i.e. how many kids, how many adult chaperon’s, etc. The club does not want to deter our rendezvous activities to summer camp Trial Life kids. If their parents attend also, we could have a chance to promote the club and possibly increase membership, then it could be worth our while. Rob and Bear’s respective churches each sponsor different age bracket of the “Trail Life” children so they both agreed to find out more information on their attendance at our rendezvous before we commit to them attending.

• Saturday June 11th, Bear’s Church wants McKinley Mountainmen to present a class to introduce them to muzzle loading. The class will be held at Bear’s house and Rob Bargewell has volunteered to help. Anyone else wishing to assist Bear and Rob teach the introduction to muzzle loading class is welcome to attend.

• Pat Reed mentioned Neil Moss, of Grouse Ridge bought a black powder shotgun and wanted Pat to teach him how to shoot it. He said Grouse Ridge would like to incorporate black powder shooting into their skeet program. Anyone interest should attend June 8th. Contact Pat Reed for details: ph. 907-376-6826.

Good of the Order:

• Rob Bargewell, Pat Reed, Calvin Pope, Howard Delo, Mike Kelly, Sandy Johnson, and her daughter Robecca are certified NMLRA Range Officers. Your eligibility time is expiring. Keith Bayha is current as a ceritified NMLRA instructor so arrangements must be made with him to take the class to recertify soon.

Meeting Adjournment:

• Jim Anderson motioned to adjourn the meeting with Tim Pauloski seconding. Motion approved and meeting adjourned at 8:08 pm.

Split-the-Pot:

• Joe Coe was drawn for the winner of this month’s Split-the-Pot, but since he was not present, he missed out. The $80 dollars will be carried forward to the June 16th meeting’s Split-the-Pot drawing.

Other Information:

• The MMMLRC Monthly Rifle Shoot was held outdoors at 9:00am, Saturday, May 21st, at the Mat Valley Sportsman’s Range. There were 11 shooters; Jim Montgomery, Pat Reed, Bob Lochman, Mark Miller, Jeff “Beans” Binegar, Martin Killough, Calvin Pope, Bear Kelsey, Steve Anderson, Mason Anderson, and Hayden Anderson. Pat Reed officiated and was RSO. Two 50 yard targets were shot with 5 shots per target (3 partial bulls w/two shots at center whole bull). However, one target was shot right handed and the other left handed. Ten shots were at a 100 yard single bull target. The postal target was the standard 6 shots at 25yds. with only the best 5 scored. Also an X target was shot at 50 yards, one shot closest to or most on the X in the center of the paper. High score overall was a tie with Mark Miller and Steve Anderson both scoring 166x. Third was Jeff Binegar with 163, Pat Reed was fourth with 154, then Cal Pope with 151. On down was Bear Kelsey-138, Bob Lochman-125, Jim Montgomery-49, Mason Anderson-13, and Hayden Anderson-10. Jim Montgomery won prize for the X shoot and Pat Reed won the $25 gift certificate for placing in 7th place on the 100 yd. target. Mary and Keith Mathis arrived late and scored targets. After the regular shoot, five shooters shot ten shoots smooth bore rigle at a single bull target 50 yds. out. Jeff Binegar was the undisputed winner having over twice as many hits as the second place finisher. Jeff score 46 points out of a possible 100. Second was Pat Reed followed by Bear Kelsey, Calvin Pope, and Bob Lochman. • The work party to build loading benches for the July’s Alaska Territorial Black Powder Rifle Match was Monday May 23rd, in Rob Bargewell’s shop at his home. Attending were Rob Bargewell, Keith Mathis, Jeff Binegar, and Calvin Pope. Five loading benches were constructed as well as obtaining and cutting pieces for twelve stools. With the loading bench Rob and Bear constructed we have a total of six shooting and six loading benches, plus the two stools for each shooting bench cut, but yet to be assembled. The club gives many thanks to the volunteers who worked one or both work parties to construct Territorial benches. • President Calvin Pope was unable to attend Memorial Rendezvous 27-30 May, because his wife, Susan, was admitted to Alaska Regional Hospital Wednesday, May 25th, with surgery the following day, May 26th. Everything went well and she was dismissed Monday, May 30th, and is convalescing at home. • Note, Nathan Barnes’s new, left handed, never fired, 50 caliber muzzleloader, from Cabela’s, made by Investarms, has not been sold yet. Nathan has been laid up with a knee replacement but soon will be able to deliver his rifle to the Palmer area if requested. Anyone needing a left handed muzzle loader, contact Nathan: cell - (415) 374-0624,

2016 Alaska State Rendezvous Agenda

The 2016 State Rondy will be held at Fort Wick July 1-9. Early set-up of camps will be Thursday & Friday June 30-July 1st

(earlier if necessary, but there may be work to do to help prepare the rondy). There will be primitive camping on site,

with a modern camper/camping site within walking distance of the primitive one. Buck Tooth Betty and the “Omnibus”

will carry latecomers, their possibles, and camping gear from the parking area to primitive camp after the rendezvous

begins. It will also deliver shuttled items from “Cubby’s” and provide transportation to and from shoots if deemed

necessary for anyone.

Firewood and outhouse necessities will be provided but campers must supply their own drinking water. The creek water

will be available for utility purposes but use at your own risk. There will be periodic supply runs made to “Cubby’s”

grocery store for resupplies of water, ice, and necessities. Camping fees $35 per camp (primitive or nonprimitive).

Opening ceremonies will be at Council Fire at 8:00pm, Friday, July 1.

Rifle and Pistol Shoots will be at a minimum of two shoots daily, designed and run by the Segundo Jeff “Beans” Binegar.

They will at 10:00am and 2:00pm with slight variations depending on circumstances. The type of shoots will vary with

the usual short range gong, novelty, and paper targets. Beans has purchased two different shooting trees for dueling

and team completion. Steve Wagoner has volunteered to bring his “Running Bear and Rabbit” set up. And, of course,

there will be a trail walk toward the end of the week. Bring a smooth bore if you have one as there will be a smooth

bore shoot or two. The Ladies will shoot the under table poker shoot, plus they are welcome at any of the daily pistol

and rifle shoots.

Prizes will be awarded daily (at Council Fire) for each activity, with the rendezvous’ Overall Mountainman based

accumulated points from each event throughout the entire rendezvous. There will be a prize for each event for 1st, 2nd,

& 3rd as well as one for another participant of that event, drawn from a hat with names of the 1st, 2nd, & 3rd winners

removed.

Monday, July 4th Celebration, we will have the regular shoot at 10:00am but the afternoon shoot will be earlier than

usual at 1:00pm. There will be Independence Day activities starting with a flag ceremony 3:00 pm. After the flag

ceremony, the kids will do a patriotic skit directed by Tim Pauloski. Then, the kids have long waited for a challenge of a

hawk throwing contest between them and the adults. The adults are going to need luck on this one! After the

competition, an Independence Day celebration “Pot Latch Meal” will be held with the Booshways providing the meat

(pulled pork and chicken), and campers providing the side dishes.

Each day, kids activities will be at 11:00am, with the Kids daily hawk at 4:00 in the afternoon. They may practice all

daybut the official completion will be at 4pm. The list of events the children will be doing all week include wool

mittenmaking, air rifle trail walk, making rock candy, the Independence Day skit, making a leather reflective mirror case,

making a neck medicine bag, and making hand cream. The list is still growing right up until the Rendezvous opening

ceremony! Ideas are welcome!

Ladies activities will be in the afternoons at 2:00pm and include making a blossom pouch, talks on different local plants

and trees to use as medication as well as the edible plants found locally. In addition there will be information on how to

store and preserve said plants. A hands-on demonstration on making a healing salve will be made by the campers.

Anyone, men women or child, wishing to demonstrate a craft or skill is encouraged to arrange it with the Booshway to

be put on the schedule.

Thursday evening we will have a biscuit “from scratch” contest for all who want to participate (the Booshways will

supply honey and butter). Meeting of other related organizations will be held after Council Fire Thursday and/or Friday

night. e.g. MMMLRC, Lance Society, & ASMLA.

The adult hawk contest will be on Friday afternoon/evening.

Raffles will include a “KING SIZE” quilt we are raffling to the public, as well as the rendezvous attendants, to help finance

the rendezvous. We will be selling tickets wherever we can (local business, gun shows, spring & state rendezvous’, etc.)

with the drawing to be held at the final council fire, Saturday, July 9th at 7:00 pm.

We will have more raffles open to just club members or state rendezvous attendees who must be present to win. Farrah

Mathis has painted a mountain scene of a mountain man , his horses and surrounding trees and terrane for raffle. And

she has drawn a wood burning portrait of the most famous of the mountainman, “Old Gabe” (Jim Bridger). She is quite

talented, as you will see! Memorial Weekend Booshway, Russ Beauvais’s raffle tickets for a flintlock pistol kit will be

available with his drawing at final council fire also. Roberta Lochman has made a scrimshawed powder horn to be

raffled. And anyone who wishes to contribute may offer an item as a prize or raffle to raise money for the 2017 State

Rendezvous Booshway Fund.

Nightly Council Fires at 8:00pm will announce daily event winners, discuss the problems of the day, and keep up on the

rondy schedule and changes that may occur.

There will be a Pot Luck at 6:00 pm on Saturday night, July 9th, before final Council Fire, awards, and closing of

ceremonies.

Joseph Doddridge: The Witchcraft Dilution part II

The afflictions of Job, through the intervention of Satan, were miraculous. The possessions mentioned

in the New Testament, in all human probability, were maniacal diseases, and if, at their cures the

supposed evil spirits spoke with an audible voice, these events were also miraculous, and effected for

a special purpose. But from miracles no general conclusions can be drawn with regard to the divine

government of the world. The conclusion is that the powers professed to be exercised by the occult

science of necromancy and arts of divination were neither more or less than impostures.

Among the Hebrews the profession of arts of divination was thought deserving capital punishment,

because the profession was of pagan origin, and of course incompatible with the profession of theism,

and a theocratic form of government. These jugglers perpetrated a debasing superstition among the

people. They were also swindlers, who divested their neighbors of large sums of money and valuable

presents, without an equivalent. On the ground then, of fraud alone, according to the genius of the

criminal codes of ancient governments, this offense deserved capital punishment.

But is the present time better than the past with regard to superstitious belief in occult influences?

Do no traces of the polytheism of our forefathers remain among their Christian descendants? This

inquiry must be answered in the affirmative. Should an almanac maker venture to give out the

Christian calendar without a column containing the signs of the zodiac, the calendar would be

condemned as being totally deficient and the whole impression would remain on his hands.

But what are these signs? They are the constellations of the zodiac, that is clusters of stars, twelve in

number, within and including the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. The constellations resemble the

animals after which they are named. But what influence do these clusters of stars exert on the

animal and the plant. Certainly none at all; and yet we are taught that the northern constellations

govern the divisions of living bodies alternately from the head to the reins, and in like manner the

southern from the reins to the feet. The sign then makes a skip from the feet to Aries, who again

assumes the government of the head, and so on. About half of these constellations are friendly

divinities and exert a salutary influence on the animal and the plant. The others are malignant in

their temper, and govern only for evil purposes. They blast, during their reign, the seed sown in the

earth and render medicine and operations of surgery unsuccessful.

We have read of the Hebrews worshipping the host of heaven, whenever they relapsed into

idolatry, and these same constellations were the hosts of heaven which they worshipped. We, it is

true, makeno offerings to these host of heaven, but we give them our faith and confidence. We hope

for physical benefit from those of them whose dominion is friendly to our interests, while the reign of

the malignant ones is an object of dread and painful apprehension. Let us not

boast very much of our science, civilization, or even Christianity while this column of the relics of

paganism still disgraces the Christian calendar.

I have made these observations with the view to discredit the remnants of superstition still existing

among us. While dreams, the howling of the dog, croaking of a raven are prophetic of future events

we are not good Christians. While we are dismayed at the signs of heaven we are for the time being

pagans. Life has real evil enough to contend with, without imaginary ones.

Editor’s note: After almost two hundred years after Joseph Doddridge

wrote this chapter on his opinion of Christians who continued to still believe

in the pagan concepts of astrology one must wonder what, if alive today, he

would think of those who attend today's Christian services on Sundays only

to follow the pagan concepts of the zodiac printed in their local daily

newspaper or viewed on their computer. Many today still adhere to the

belief that being born under a sign of the zodiac is a controlling factor in their existence, for

example; those born under the sign of Taurus, and claim it's powers, which is nothing more than

repeating the actions of the ancient Hebrew's who prayed to the golden calf of the bible.
