The chipmaker has been talking to bankers about the sale, said a report
Intel is considering selling its security business as the company tries to focus on delivering chips for cloud computing and connected devices, according to a news report.
The Intel Security business came largely from the company’s acquisition for US$7.7 billion of security software company McAfee. Intel announced plans to bake some of the security technology into its chips to ensure higher security for its customers.
With the surge in cyberthreats, providing protection to the variety of Internet-connected devices, such as PCs, mobile devices, medical gear and cars, requires a fundamentally new approach involving software, hardware and services, the company said in February 2011, when announcing the completion of the McAfee acquisition.

Intel has been talking to bankers about the future of its cybersecurity business for a deal that would be one of the largest in the sector, reported The Financial Times, citing people close to the discussions. It said a group of private equity firms may join together to buy the security business if it is sold at the same price or higher than what Intel paid for it.
“I could see them selling a piece of the service, but not all security capabilities,” said Patrick Moorhead, president and principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy.
“Intel has a decent security play right now and security is paramount to the future of IoT,” Moorhead said. “Hardware-based security is vital to the future of computing.”The company rebranded its McAfee business as Intel Security in 2014.
The security sector has seen a lot of interest from private equity buyers. Symantec said earlier this month it was acquiring Web security provider Blue Coat for $4.65 billion in cash, in a deal that will see Silver Lake, an investor in Symantec, enhancing its investment in the merged company, and Bain Capital, majority shareholder in Blue Coat, reinvesting $750 million in the business through convertible notes.
Intel said in April that it was cutting 12,000 jobs, or 11 percent of its workforce, by mid-2017 as it tries to evolve from chips for PCs to silicon for data centers and the Internet of Things.
Intel is declining to comment on the report, a company spokeswoman wrote in an email.

6STEPSTOBUILDINGANORGANIZATIONTHATATTRACTSTALENT
If one thing seems certain about the future of work it’s that businesses will face a fight to attract and retain staff. While robots and AI may render some roles redundant, the workforce’s brightest and most creative minds will have big demands. Today’s workers (the white collar variety at least) expect flexibility in where and when they work, clear opportunities to progress and above all a sense of purpose.
Speaking at MT’s Future of Work conference today Gareth Jones, a visiting professor at IE Business School, gave delegates a flavor of how to build an authentic organization that people want to work for. Despite companies talking a lot about the need to retain and attract talent, he says, ‘engagement and trust levels within organizations remain stubbornly low.’
AIMICT Newsletter | June 20168
Along with London Business School’s Professor Rob Goffee, Jones wrote the book Why should anyone work here?, which spells out the six important characteristics that make an organization authentic – and therefore help them get best out of their workers. They come in the form of the pneumonic DREAMS:
Difference – Jones emphasized the importance of thinking beyond the equally important traditional methods of diversity, based on race, gender and such, and letting people really be themselves. ‘It’s no good recruiting diverse people if you then homogenize them,’ he said.
Radical honesty – people should know what’s going. ‘In a world of freedom of information acts, Wikileaks and whistleblowers, the age of corporate secrets is over,’ Jones said. ‘Tell the truth before someone else does.’
Extra value – all organizations, from McKinsey to McDonalds, can add value to their employees, says Jones. That can be in the form of executive training programmes or simply teaching unskilled school leavers basic literacy and numeracy.
Authenticity – ‘mean what you say and say what you mean.’ Corporate purpose has to be about more than just meaningless mission statements. ‘Authenticity builds trust,’ said Jones.Meaning – a meaningful job in a meaningful organization. Nobody wants to feel pointless. ‘The most profitable [businesses] are not always the most profit-driven,’ said Jones. ‘It always seemed to us that profit is almost certainly an outcome of something else you desire – it’s not an end in itself.’
Simple rules – ‘a handful of shared values is worth more than a thousand rules.’ That doesn’t mean we should embrace some kind of organizational anarchism, says Jones. But people need to understand why the rules matter – and leaders need to avoid ‘rule creep’, where systems become increasingly bureaucratic.
