SAILING ASSOCIATION OF MARCO ISLAND P. O. BOX 61, MARCO ISLAND, FL 34146 www.samisailor.org June 2016 COMMODORES CABIN Ken Bardon, Commodore Well, it's that time of the year when the "snowbirds" disappear up North and the island becomes quiet. I, being one of them, had the pleasure of SAMI member Peter Coggins’ help as crew on Moonbeam from Marco Island to Oyster Bay in Long Island, New York. We departed Marco on May 13, rounded Key West after an overnight sail, and went direct to Wrightsville Beach, NC for a crew change. Early on the morning of the 26th, we entered New York harbor with perfect weather and beautiful views of the Statute of Liberty and Manhattan (my friend, Kyle Swift and I, below). As many times as I have seen this view, it is always a sight to behold. Peter rejoined SAMI this past season after a few years hiatus. We had a lot of time to discuss activities at SAMI, and he had a lot of great ideas for the organization, and looks forward to participating in the events this coming year. I will present his ideas at the next bridge meeting. Please enjoy the summer, wherever you are. Phil, Micki, and the rest of the bridge, will be planning fun activities for those still on Marco for the summer. ADVICE FROM THE VICE Phil Litow, Vice Commodore Hi Sami sailors, The highlight for May was the monthly meeting where Keith Wohltman, the Commander of the Marco Island USCG Auxiliary Flotilla, gave an excellent, thorough and informative presentation on emergency communications. Many of us learned things that could someday save lives. Also at this meeting, I was happy to present checks for $200 each, from the SAMI Bud Light Regatta, to Commander Wohltman for the USCGA and to President Rocky Cale of the Marco Island Community Sailing Center. A bit of a down note has been the lack of participation in the cruises that Micki has organized. Lack of participation in all SAMI activities is something that the board has been discussing and will have to be dealt with later by the membership. We will not have a formal meeting in June rather we will get together for dinner at the Philly Grille on the 16th. Please let me know if you plan to join us there so we can let the Philly Grille know how many to expect. Hope to see you there. [email protected] or 774-2669 See Page 4 for Upcoming Events!!

Well, it's that time of the year when the "snowbirds" disappear up North and the island becomes quiet. I, being one of them, had the pleasure of SAMI member Peter Coggins’ help as crew on Moonbeam from Marco Island to Oyster Bay in Long Island, New York. I will present his ideas at the next bridge meeting. Please enjoy the summer, wherever you are. Phil, Micki, and the rest of the bridge, will be planning fun activities for those still on Marco for the summer.

ADVICE FROM THE VICE Phil Litow, Vice Commodore

Hi Sami sailors, The highlight for May was the monthly meeting where Keith Wohltman, the Commander of the Marco Island USCG Auxiliary Flotilla, gave an excellent, thorough and informative presentation on emergency communications. We will not have a formal meeting in June rather we will get together for dinner at the Philly Grille on the 16th. CRUISIN’ ABOUT Micki Gobeil, Rear Commodore

Sanibel Cruise May 13-15, 2016

Happy Hour onboard Never Again II

Never Again II comfortably docked at the Sanibel Island Marina

When the New Bridge was Installed in January 2016, as your Rear Commodore I promised to work diligently with the SAMI Bridge and Members to plan a Calendar of Events that would include EVERYONE, where NO ONE would be left behind.

So far, over the first five months of the new year we have planned two Raft Ups: Smokehouse Bay and Champney Bay; three Cruises: Panther Key, Fort Myers Beach, and Sanibel Island Marina; and one Race: the Bud Light Regatta. Each SAMI member who attended these events will attest to the GREAT times we shared to include: GOOD COMPANY, GOOD FOOD and GOOD SAILING. We are sad to say the only thing MISSING has been MORE OF YOU SAMI MEMBERS who we would like to share these sailing events. With seven more months to go with the New Bridge the 3 R'S of Recreational Sailing: RAFT UP'S, RENDEVOUS and RACING, will be ongoing and we hope more of you will plan to participate.

Russ and Linda Columbo onboard Never Again II made the trip to Sanibel under sail in six hours. Gilles and I (our boat is still being repaired) drove up. The Sanibel Island Marina and facilities were exceptional, and the Dock Master both friendly and accommodating. The food and atmosphere at Granny Dot's was excellent. After arriving everyone spent some time walking around and getting familiar with the island and the many beautiful things to see, places to go and things to do. After dinner, we met on board Never Again II where we enjoyed after dinner drinks, listening to the night sounds of the trade winds in the palms, the rippling of the water, and the clinking of the halyards under the stars. How much BETTER can it be?

The next scheduled SAMI on-the-water event is the 4th of July Boat Parade and Cook Out. With a club membership of over 70, with over 20 SAILBOATS, we hope to have at least 10-12 Sailboats in parade formation. We plan to meet at 11 am in Factory Bay, where we will get into position to motor sail on the waterway past Pier 81 and Riverside Condos, pass Snook Inn then go off shore south to Residents’ Beach, turn around and head for home to get ready for the Cook Out at 4pm at our home.

This Parade Route gives SAMI a great deal of exposure and recognition. It has always been FUN waving to the many people who crowd onto their balconies and on the shore line to wave and cheer to SAMI Cruisers. So, plan to decorate your boat with lot's of RED, WHITE and BLUE and dress accordingly. This day is a wonderful day to PAY TRIBUTE TO OUR NATION on INDEPENDENCE DAY and to enjoy HAPPY TIMES with SAMI Members.

RSVP by July 1st if you plan to participate: 642-4241 or [email protected]
