View this email in your browser June 2016 Volume 22 Issue 6 ~President's Report ~ Franclyn Heinecke Late breaking news about our WSU pollinator gardens! We have received a $500 grant from the South Sound Chapter of the Native Plant Society to purchase plants for our pollinator gardens at the WSU campus! Additionally, they will have plants for us during their fall plant sale. And, we have heard from Woodbrook Native Plant Nursery in Gig Harbor that they will give us greatly reduced prices for several varieties to plant in our hedgerows. Yeah! June meeting – Hives in the ‘Hood Blackberry flow is on. Are your colonies ready to store all of that great nectar? After that, when do you start getting your colonies ready for fall? There are lots of things to think about during the beekeeping year. Come to the June meeting to talk with your beekeeping neighbors, possibly find a mentor, and get your questions answered! ~Presidents Report~

Franclyn Heinecke

Late breaking news about our WSU pollinator gardens

We have received a $500 grant from the South Sound Chapter of the Native PlantSociety to purchase plants for our pollinator gardens at the WSU campus

Additionally they will have plants for us during their fall plant sale And we haveheard from Woodbrook Native Plant Nursery in Gig Harbor that they will give us

greatly reduced prices for several varieties to plant in our hedgerows Yeah

Blackberry flow is on Are your colonies ready to store all of that great nectar After that when do you start getting your colonies ready for fall There are lots of things to think about during the beekeeping year

Come to the June meeting to talk with your beekeeping neighbors

possibly find a mentor and get your questions answered

There is no meeting the first Monday of July (the 4th) but mark your calendars

newsletter It costs only $1050 must be preshypaid and because of the nature ofthis service refunds will not be made if you donrsquot pick up the food yoursquove

ordered Let Hannah know with at least three days advance notice along withyour payment

Dr Dewey Caron returning for an October 1st workshop

Members really enjoyed and learned a lot from Dr Dewy Caronrsquos interesting andinformative talk in May Hersquoll be with us again the first weekend in October for adayshylong workshop on fall management Details will be coming soon But markyour calendars now for Saturday October 1 to learn even more from Dewey There will be class sessions and handsshyon apiary visits weather permitting

Time to start thinking about officers for 2017

Elections will be here before we know it PCBA has four elected positions ndashpresident vice president secretary and treasurer And there are several

positions that are appointed by the newly elected president ndashapiary education membership programsspeakers and others as determined by the president The elected officers and appointed chair people serve as the

PCBA Board of Directors

Being a Board member allows you to be a part of the direction of PCBA earnsyou 15 points per year toward your advanced beekeeping certificates and is agood learning experience on how nonshyprofit boards function Serving as a

volunteer nonshyprofit Board member also can help you with your career movesas it shows different levels of leadership and involvement

This will be my last term as president ndash term limits shelf life pull date and all

that It has been an honor to serve as your president for these past two years Ihave learned a lot and will continue to be involved in PCBA in several ways mostly to make sure the Parkland and WSU forage projects are

completed as promised

Itrsquos time for someone else to take the helm and help lead the organization to itsnext phase We formally take nominations beginning in August with elections atthe November meeting If yoursquore interested let us know and consider attendingthe monthly Board meetings to come up to speed on PCBA issues The Board

meets the third Monday of the month 6 PM at the Puyallup public library

We need set up help with the BBQ in July We need about 2 people to man the Honey house

Top Bar Hive Of one our active duty members donated a top bar hive to the club Theymoved it here from Hawaii so it needs some upgrades I have made

some modifications to it I need to get the roof set up for Washington weather I am looking for some cedar shingles to put on the roof If you have some that

you can donate please let Larry know We will be raffling the top bar off

during the Washington State Fair

Education You should be doing inspections ever 10shy14 days You should have your bees inplace and seeing lots of eggs larva and capped brood If you see eggs feel freeto cut out your swarm cells If your hive is doing well you should have enough

bees to put on a second box

As I have helped some people do hive inspections please be aware that deepscan weigh up to 80shy100 pounds at the peak of the season A western can be 50shy70 pounds Now is the time to change up boxes before the bees start buildingand laying If you need to move to smaller lighter boxes do so You can over

winter a deep and two westerns and switch them out next spring

Education You should be doing inspections ever 10shy14 days You should have your bees inplace and seeing lots of eggs larva and capped brood If you see eggs feel freeto cut out your swarm cells If your hive is doing well you should have enough

bees to put on a second box

As I have helped some people do hive inspections please be aware that deepscan weigh up to 80shy100 pounds at the peak of the season A western can be 50shy70 pounds Now is the time to change up boxes before the bees start buildingand laying If you need to move to smaller lighter boxes do so You can over

winter a deep and two westerns and switch them out next spring
