RECAP OF MAY DISTRICT 9 MEETING AND MRA MEETING

By: Richard Koen

Our speaker at the May, District 9 Community meeting was Chris Kaufmann, Fire Chief of District 1. Year to date his district has responded to 316 calls. Twelve of these were structure fires and 144 were medical calls. The remainder were car accidents, gas leaks, non-structure fires, etc. Through his successful efforts to raise his district’s class rating, homeowner’s insurance rates in our district are eligible for a reduction of approximately 11.3%. Further raises in class will result in a reduction of approximately 5.3%.

Other topics of discussions included flood insurance. We were advised that in order to insure that homeowners receive the advantage of protected rates, the flood insurance must be continuous and uninterrupted. Any lapse in coverage could result in having to pay at market rates.

The failure of the jail/justice tax renewal means that they will be able to continue operations until June, 2019; using the existing tax and a $11.3 million reserve fund that is available.

The meeting of the Military Road Alliance in May was a very professionally conducted tour of the new forensics lab on Brownswitch Road. The depth and extent of this facility was very impressive.

The agenda for the May meeting of the Parish Council in Mandeville included 56 items. Most related to zoning changes and no issues were directly related to our area. A copy of the agenda is available on line at “stpgov.org/parish-council-agendas”.

CLEANEST CITY CONTEST

Town of Pearl River

1st Place

The town of Pearl River won first place in the Louisiana Garden Club Federation (LGCF) Cleanest City Contest at the STATE level in their population category. They won at the distr ict level several times in previous years, but this is the first time to win at the state level, which is a wonderful accomplishment. Magnolia Forest Garden Club is pleased to be a part of this effort by sponsoring the town, giving advice and hints and providing refreshments for the judges and the clean-up crew. This year garden club members, Sandy Solar and Carroll Knowles, conducted and narrated the tour for the state judges filling in for the mayor and aldermen who had a conflict with the judging time. Garden club member, Beryl Deris, helped hostess and coordinated refreshments. The aim of the contest is to instill civic pride in citizens and thus improve the appearance of towns and cities. Sandy Solar and Carroll Knowles also served as judges at the district level for Gretna, Jean Lafitte, La-Place and Edgard. It is a rewarding experience to witness how committed the citizens and elected officials are to keeping their towns clean.

MAY GARDEN OF THE MONTH

449 Parlange Micky and Sue Ellen Farley

The home of Mickey and Sue Ellen Farley at 449 Parlange was selected as the Garden of the Month for May for the Magnolia Forest Garden Club. The judges, Betty Rose and Nancy O'Bry-an felt the yard and landscaping was well maintained and manicured. The Camellia sasanqua, predominately pink with two white at the very beginning of the walkway, were healthy with dark, waxy leaves with touches of new light green growth. Large loropetalums were beautifully shaped as well as smaller hawthorns. All the shrubs were well established so the pruning technique of "crown lifting" or "skirt lifting" gave the landscaping a crisp, regimental appearance. Splashes of color of cheery red and bright yellow annuals were seen in planters along the walkway. The agapanthus' were in the early stages of blooming and will shortly fill the spaces with more color. The overall appearance of the yard was one of un-cluttered serenity.

Garden of the month winners are awarded a gift certifi-cate to Garden Spot Nursery donated ½ by Magnolia Forest Garden Club and ½ by Garden Spot Nursery.

● The Association has freshened up the subdivision flower beds by removing the cool weather plants and planting colorful annuals and fresh pine straw mulch. The garden club finished off the look with American flags to celebrate Memorial Day through July 4

th.

● Since the tree trimming along Military Road has exposed a huge “eye sore” and trash from the Rocket Ranch Trailer Park, the parish has received numerous complaints. The parish has assured us they are on top of the situation, and the owner of the trailer park will take care of the problem.

● One of the feral hogs was trapped and removed. The trap had been in place since January 1st, and

a hog finally entered the trap. So far, things have settled down and there have not been any recent hog sightings or damage.

● Association members should be sure we have your email address because during hurricane season, this will be our source for communicating weather related reports we receive from the parish.

● Magnolia Forest Stable has summer horse camps June 4-9, 19-23; July 10-14, 24-28. For more information contact Juli Byrd 707-7743, [email protected]. Also, find them on facebook @Magnolia Forest Stables

● Congratulations to Erin Lohrenz who ran her second Boston Marathon last month, finishing with a personal best time of 3 hours 6 minutes!
