After undergoing a digital facelift, the Club’s new website was officially unveiled at a roadshow on Saturday, May 13.

VIP guests posing with members of the Management Committee: (From left) Newsletter Convenor Peter Teo, Vice-Captain Jamil Maksoem, Captain C.S. Kong, former Club Chairman Stephen Lee, Education Minister (Schools) and Second Minister for Transport Ng Chee Meng, Manpower Minister Lim Swee Say, Keppel Club President Lai Mun Onn, NTUC Club CEO Yeo Khee Leng and Tennis Convenor Kamal Ehsan.

We are live!

Held at the golf wing, the event was attended by Manpower Minister Lim Swee Say, Education Minister (Schools) and Second Minister for Transport Ng Chee Meng, NTUC Club CEO Yeo Khee Leng and former Keppel Club Chairman Stephen Lee.

The VIP guests, who were in the Club for a private visit, graciously dropped in after their friendly game to explore the website for themselves. Accompanied by members of the Management Committee, they also posed for photos.

With the support of staff and cheery ambassadors from Chang beer, other members who played in the Monthly Medals game were also given a live tutorial on the new section which allows registration for upcoming golf events.

PRAISE FROM MINISTER

Keppel’s new website received rave reviews, especially from Mr Lim, who was particularly impressed with its modern design, which promotes interactivity via social media platforms. These new

features are part of the Club’s vision to go digital.

“The new Keppel website is very well done and easy to navigate. Great job to the team!” he said.

Mr Yeo lauded the golf course layout page, which covers hole-by-hole information with important insights from Mr Greg Anketell, a professional coach and member of the Singapore and Australian PGA ‘AAA’ class, who also teaches at the Golf Line School.

“If I’m looking to play golf at Keppel, the course layout page would be my first stop. It’s very useful to read tips from Greg, and also look at the detailed course description before you play there. Of course, following the tips are a different matter altogether!” he joked.

ENHANCING VISITORS’ ExPERIENCE

One of the key goals of the new website is to enable our

Assistant Corporate Communications Manager, Ashikin Hashim, showing Manpower Minister Lim Swee Say features of the new Keppel website.

As a result, the new website has been optimised to meet these demands, offering large buttons, icons and photos to simplify each function.

This will help us analyse how our visitors interact with the web pages in the long term and modify our website to improve their experience.

We hope you enjoy the new Keppel website!

members to log in to their portal, and make bookings and enquiries from anywhere, using their mobile devices. They can also retrieve their monthly statements, and make enquiries on facilities.

According to initial site analytics, 59 percent of our website visitors are accessing the site via their mobile phones, with an average session of two minutes and 58 seconds. The pages highlighting our food and beverage offerings at the club were ranked highly, on par with information on golf.

Newsletter Sub-committee member, Mrs Helen Neo, exploring the new Keppel website via touchscreen.

Mr Martin Marini smiling as he tries out the interface of the new Keppel website.

Happy Mid-Year to all our members and readers, and we’re kicking it off with the launch of the new Keppel website. The future is digital, and we’re excited to move forward with a modern interface, designed for use on your tablets and mobile devices. Don’t forget to explore it for yourself, and let us know what you think!

Editor’s Note

This issue is packed with reports of many activities, including Keppel’s visit to Johor Bahru to golf with three clubs there. We also hosted our friends from the Western Australian Golf Club (WAGC) when they visited us on May 5. Read all about it…. including the grand arrival of a special DC Comics Superhero on the course!

Interestingly, Keppel member Mr Daniel Ng scaled the heights of Everest Base Camp (EBC) and even remembered to take his sand wedge with him. Get inspired by his Traveller’s Tale on page

six because it may just inspire you to go out and achieve your dreams!

Also, if you’re thinking about what to do during the summer holidays, you can enrol your children and teenagers in SITA Academy’s Summer Tennis Camp which takes place over 12 weeks in June. For those who’ve got that Schooling vibe in you, the Swimming Gala takes place on July 9. Have a great month!

How I founded the world’s highest and second highest golf club

| 6 | Keppel Links

After having climbed Mount Kinabalu in Kota Kinabalu (2011), Mount Bromo and Ijen in East Java (2013), Rinjani, a live volcano, in Lombok (2014), and trekked the Druk Path Trek in Bhutan (2015), I was hooked. Hooked to the euphoria of having achieved a successful trek and summit of a mountain. It’s a feeling of achievement in doing something out of the ordinary, beyond one’s normal capabilities. So around April 2016, I announced to my friends my intention to trek to the Everest Base Camp (EBC) and to climb an Ice Peak mountain (Island Peak), and asked them to come along.

Some indicated interest but did not have the time or fitness for the planned 25-day duration of the “adventure of a lifetime”. So I decided to go alone rather than miss my window of opportunity while I’m still mobile, and also before age catches up. I’m already 66 years old and will be 67 when I start on the proposed trek.

I read all I could about trekking in the Himalayas and climbing mountains, searching YouTube and blogs for information. To commit myself to the audacious, big bold adventure alone, I purchased my return tickets and booked my trekking and climbing package directly with a local company. After paying 30 percent of the fees there was no turning back.

Though I’m already physically quite active, I still felt unfit for the trek and climb. After having seen videos and advice from people who have done it, exercises like staircase climbing and hill trekking were added to my existing weights and cardiovascular training. Three months before the trek, once a week, I was devoted to climbing the 40-storey staircase buildings in Toa Payoh, and Bukit Timah Hill – each time with a 5 kg pack on my back.

Sept 26, 2016

My solo adventure began with a flight to Kathmandu via Bangkok where I met my local agents who took me to their office and paid up the balance of the package cost. Arrangements were made to meet my guide for the duration of the trek and climb the next day. The day after that, the trek started proper after a short 35-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (one of the most dangerous airports for landings and take-offs). The porter joined us here, and for the duration of the trek, he and The writer teeing up at EBC.

the sand wedge and teed up as the others looked on with amazement and amusement as I swung at the bright red golf ball towards the direction of the Khumbu icefield.

The ultimate aim to tee off from the EBC and the summit of Island Peak served as extra motivation for me to reach my goals. This also acted as an ice breaker with the other trekkers. A few of them borrowed my club to pose for pictures as well. I’m sure that I’m the first person to tee off at EBC, so this makes me the founder of the EBC Golf Club, the second highest golf club in the world. Why second highest? I’ll come to that later.

On Oct 11, we arrived at the Base Camp (5,087m) for Island Peak. For the first time in my life, I put on heavy snow boots and crampons for some climbing lessons provided by my

the guide would be my best friends and companions.

Along the way to EBC, we stayed overnight in tea houses as we trekked higher. The altitude in Lukla is 2,886m and by the time we reached EBC it was 5,486m. As we trekked higher, there was less oxygen content in the air, and we stayed additional days at Namche Bazaar (3,440m) and Dingboche (4,260m) to acclimatise our bodies so as to prevent altitude sickness or worse, high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) or high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE).

During acclimatisation, we went for short treks to higher altitudes in the day and returned to stay for the night at lower altitudes. The mantra is go high and sleep low. On Oct 7, we made it to Gorakshep (5,180m), checked into a tea house, had lunch and then continued the last two hours to EBC. It is just a deserted rocky outcrop overlooking the lumpy Khumbu icefield where the brave and the serious would cross numerous times to begin their climb towards the summit of Mount Everest. On this day, the EBC was deserted except for us normal mortals who wanted to see the place for ourselves. However, if it was between April and June, the area would be like a mini-city filled with multi-coloured tents and mountaineers aspiring to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

For the past few days my porter, Myla, had been carrying my sand wedge, and many trekkers couldn’t have missed it. I’d hear some of them remarking to their fellow trekkers wondering where the golf course is. At EBC, I took

Page 9: June 2017 MCI (P) 048/04/2017 - Keppel Club

guide, Nima Dorji Sherpa (who has been on the summit of Mount Everest three times), on climbing at the nearby slopes. In the process, I figured out how to use the harness, ropes, ice axe, safety procedures and more. At the end of the one-hour lesson, the guide was happy with my performance and announced that I was ready and competent for the summit climb in two days’ time.

Some people proceeded to climb to the summit directly from the Base Camp and returned on the same day. However, my guide decided that I had a better chance of summiting Island Peak by doing it in two days instead of one. Thus, the next day we proceeded to the High Camp for the night at around 5,600m, which is about a four-and-a-half-hour climb up the steep rocky hillside.

Oct 13, 2016, 2.30am

It was dark and freezing. With our headlights on, my guide checked my attire and we began our slow climb while he repeated a prayer mantra under his breath as we trudged and scrambled along upwards the steep rocky terrain. I could see a long line of lights above and below me dancing away. These were climbers who passed me and some were from Base Camp while others from High Camp.

At 5.30am, we arrived at “crampon point” where we changed to our ice climbing boots and snapped on the crampons. We also had to put our harness on and roped up. My guide

already overtaken us. As day broke, I could see the beautiful white and the surrounding mountains all around me. We had to negotiate very steep slopes and crossed crevasses by climbing across an aluminium ladder at one point.

At around 8.00am, we arrived at the 60-degree ice wall. We fixed our jumar to the safety ropes and started the slow process of pulling ourselves up one small step at a time, inching our way up with one hand on the jumar, the other on an ice axe to stab into the ice wall, and one leg kicking my crampon further up the wall. The process was energy-sapping and I had to stop frequently to recover my breath and strength.

After nearly two hours, I made it to the ridge where it was another 50m slow trudge along the narrow upward sloping ridge to the summit of Island Peak. On Oct 13, 2016, 10.00am, I was the last to summit. Nevertheless, my guide congratulated me.

After I took a few photos, I took my orange golf ball out, and with my Honma sand wedge, took a short swing and sent the ball down into the valley whilst I was still attached to the safety line as my guide took a photo of my historic moment. There was not much room for a full swing, just in case I lost my balance and fell into the abyss.

I became the first and also oldest person to let fly a real golf ball using a proper golf club from Island Peak at an altitude of 6,150m – The highest anyone has done that. That’s how I founded

the highest and the second highest golf clubs in the world. So anyone wishing to join the clubs would just have to post a Facebook photo of themselves teeing off from the respective places as proof.

As a thought, I could also possibly be the oldest Singaporean (67 years, one month and 13 days old) to have summited Island Peak. If any readers could perhaps check and verify this fact, I would be thankful for that.

After about less than half an hour on the summit taking in the view, it was time to get down to the Base Camp. Getting down from the face wall was fun as we just abseiled down. However, after getting back to the snowline, we had to scramble along the rocky narrow ridge at a few points which I discovered was very narrow with a straight drop down a few thousand feet on both sides. I did not realise this when we were going through that in darkness during the ascent. Any mistake here would surely send me to hell.

I was exhausted physically; though it was downhill all the way I had to rest every few steps as I made my way to the Base Camp. It was 7.30pm by then and darkness had already set in. All in, my push to summit from the High Camp to the summit of Island Peak and back to Base Camp took me a total of 17 hours. Slow, but who cares. For my age I’m happy I made it.

After a cup of tea, I was too exhausted to have dinner so I crawled into my tent and slid into my sleeping bag and was soon knocked out. The next morning, we continued our uneventful five-day trek back to Lukla to catch a flight to Kathmandu where my adventure ended.

All in, I lost 6 kg and during my trek I maintained an average heart rate of 120 bpm. My highest heart rate recorded was 200 bpm (which lasted for about 15 minutes). That was during my climb up to the summit of Island Peak.

walked up front while I, armed with an ice axe, followed him about 6m behind connected with a safety rope.

It was a beautiful Friday morning for our friends from Western Australian Golf Club (WAGC), who made a stopover at Keppel on May 5, for an inter-club friendly.

Toasting to friendships from Down Under By Ashikin Hashim

WAGC and Keppel share many similarities – they too are a club with a rich history dating back to 1885, and remain one of the most prestigious clubs in Western Australia.

Interestingly, our reciprocal agreement with them has seen many members heading to Perth with rave reviews, so it was only fair for us to be gracious hosts in return.

The morning started early with registration and breakfast for our 30 guests at 7am, followed by golf on the luscious Keppel course.

The game was played in the 4BBB Stableford Point format, and our Club members arrived in good spirits ready to welcome their counterparts from Down Under.

Dressed in their bright orange tees, team Keppel posed for photographs and exchanged pleasantries with their WAGC counterparts.

The spirit of camaraderie was very much apparent on the course too, with the teams divided into 15 flights and strategising among one another.

Then like a scene straight out of a movie, Keppel’s very own “Batman” made an appearance on

the course with his custom-built Batmobile, much to the excitement of our guests.

As Keppelites, we love to entertain our guests and put on a show – and this was no different!

OLD TIES REVISITED

At the post-game lunch held in Keppel Hall, Club President Lai Mun Onn and Captain C.S. Kong thanked participants for making the trip here and shared funny stories from the morning’s events on the course.

WAGC Club President Mark Rice, was also in high spirits as he addressed the crowd on stage.

He garnered everyone’s attention by extending greetings in three languages – English, Mandarin

and Malay - before sharing a toast with President Lai before the prize presentation.

Mr Rice also joked that while Keppel had its “Buayas”, WAGC too had their equivalent in the form of “Bandits”, who were unfortunately, distracted by the Chang girls out on the course.

Interestingly, he shared that a member of his family was a former Club Champion in the 1960s, and that he was impressed by the history and legacy of Keppel.

Indeed, we look forward to more insightful visits with our friends from WAGC in the years or months to come, and we strongly encourage our members to experience the course and culture there, should they get the opportunity.

Keppel Juniors showed their mettle again at the recent National (Secondary) School Games Golf Championships 2017 (NSGGC), held between April 3 and 5, 2017, by sweeping all of the Boys’ Individual “A”, “B” and “C” titles as well as the Girls’ Individual “A” division title.

By Kuk Hun Yi, Green Committee member

The NSGGC was moved from Marina Bay Golf Course (where the event had been held in years past) to the Dendro and Vanda courses at the Orchid Country Club (OCC) this year. In addition to moving to a new course, the first two days of the event for the individual tournament was also played from a shotgun format, which was an unusual format for a tournament of this nature. The juniors’ patience was fully tested on the first day of competition, as the start was delayed by rain. This together with the compacted fixtures on every hole led to further delays, culminating in a very long first day

of play. This may have led to the officials’ continued emphasis on keeping to the pace of play, which resulted in more than one slow play penalty being imposed (with some of these penalties eventually affecting podium finishes).

In the Boys’ Individual “A” division competition, playing off the blue tees, Desmond Kim (Keppel) representing ACJC edged out Louis Tee of Singapore Sports School (SSS) by a single stroke winning with a two-day aggregate score of 151 (74, 77). In the Boys’ Individual “A” division title, other notable Keppel

Juniors Warren Lee (RI) came in fifth, Teng Shao Xuan (RI) came in sixth and Marc Tan (RI) came in ninth position.

In the Boys’ Individual “B” division competition, playing off the white tees, Andre Chong (Keppel) representing SSS, also edged out Brandon Han of St Gabriel’s by a stroke as well, with an aggregate two-day score of 141 (70, 71). In the third runner-up position, Justin Kuk (Keppel) representing SSS, improved from a slow start on his first day’s 10th position by carding in a second day three-under score of 70, coming in with a two-day aggregate score of 145 OCB (75, 70). In the Boys’ Individual “B” division title, other notable Keppel Juniors Jason Kuk (SSS) came in 11th and Cheang Kai Siong (HSC) came in 13th position.

In the Boys’ Individual “C” division competition, Sean Lee (Keppel), playing off white tees, romped home the winner by 10 strokes over his nearest challenger, with a two-day aggregate score of 150 (77, 73). Sean is continuing a fine vein of form having also recently won the inaugural SGA 9-hole

junior competition held at Sentosa’s Serapong Golf Course.

In the Girls’ Individual “A” division competition, it was a one-two finish for Keppel, with Callista Chen representing SSS, winning by three strokes over her nearest challenger with an aggregate score of 149 (72, 77) and Nicole Mok, representing SSS, coming in first runner-up with an aggregate score of 151 (74, 77). Other results from Keppel Juniors in the Girls’ Individual competitions were as follows:

• IntheGirls’Individual“A”division, Janice Teo (ACJC) came in fifth and Stacey Chiu (CJC) came in 10th position.

• IntheGirls’Individual“B”division, Angelica Wu (MGS) came in seventh position.

• IntheGirls’Individual“C”division, Shannon Tan (MGS) came in sixth position.

In the team competitions held on the third day of the competition, the following Keppel Juniors were among the podium finishers:

• IntheGirls’Team“A”competition, Callista Chen and Jacqueline Young (SSS) won the

Team competition. Janice Teo (ACJC) came in third in this division.

• IntheGirls’Team“C”competition, Shannon Tan and Inez Ng (MGS), won the Team competition.

• IntheBoys’Team“A”competition, Desmond Kim and Bryan Heinrich (ACJC) narrowly won the Team competition by OCB. An all Keppel Junior team, Warren Lee and Teng Shao Xuan (RI), was just edged into second place.

• intheBoys’Team“B”competition, another all Keppel

junior team, Andre Chong and Justin Kuk (SSS) came in second in the Team competition losing out by only a single stroke (which they would have won if not for a slow play penalty stroke levied against each player in their flight).

Keppel Juniors have again done the Club proud by flying the Keppel flag high. The Keppel spirit of excellence and sportsmanship will live on in our Juniors in years to come and we are indeed proud to be the golfing home of so many of the nation’s top juniors.

This is a corrigendum to my previous article published in the May edition of Keppel Links on the SGA Junior Golf Invitational held at the Sentosa Serapong course on March 27.

A new wave of Keppel JuniorsBy Kuk Hun Yi, Green Committee member

In addition to Sean Lee who won the Boys’ Division 1, Bryan Heng (handicap 24), who is also a Keppel Junior, won the Boys’ Division 2 (11 years and under) by scoring 24 OCB Stableford points.

And while Angelica Wu and Jillian Kuk came in second in their respective divisions, in Girls’ Division 2, Guo Jun Xi (handicap 24), came in in 5th position with 11 OCB Stableford points.

Indeed, promising talents like Bryan and Jun Xi represent a new wave of Keppel Juniors that will be a force to be reckoned with in years to come.

Three gruelling rounds of golf under the baking sun. Yet the 20 Keppelites who went to Johor to play in Austin Heights Golf and Hotel Resort (AHGHR), Kluang Country Club (KCC) and Palm Resort Golf and Country Club (PRGCC) on April 28, 29 and 30 put on their best show and kept the Keppel flag flying.

No trophies, but Keppel flies its flag By Peter Teo, Newsletter Convenor

No, we did not emerge team champion, but we – including the three lady golfers in the group – gave of our best and put on our best behaviour on and off the course.

The Austin Heights game was a practice round which ended with

Team Keppel in striking orange T-shirts at Palm Resort Golf and Country Club.

a lunch. The other two games with our reciprocal clubs were friendlies.

The Kluang game was truly friendly although KCC’s 9-hole walking course was anything but friendly; in fact, it was the most challenging of the three courses, and touted as one of Malaysia’s

toughest. But the camaraderie before, during and after the game, spoke volumes of our ties, which went back more than 30 years ago – a point highlighted by our Captain C. S. Kong in his address at the prize-giving-cum-gift-exchange ceremony.

Sure, there were a few grumblings about the punishing course, but every single one of us completed playing the full 18 holes. Keppelites’ sportsmanship came to the fore. And so did KCC members’ – they were so encouraging and accommodating. Prizes were given to the best pairs of both clubs and the overall best pairs, but there was no mention of the winning team. Very friendly, indeed.

The post-game lunch was a roaring affair with plenty to eat and drink … and a lot to cheer for and to make merry. The main attraction was the Keppel Club golfers (in blue T-shirts) with Kluang Country Club’s Captain Adam Chua. Keppel

Club’s Captain C.S. Kong is in the centre (stooping).

local nasi lemak ... and for a good number of us, the durians as well, offered to us as soon as we arrived at the clubhouse in the morning. Such was the hospitality extended to us.

In his address, Captain Kong told the Kluang members that “your hospitality is incredible”. Extending an invitation to them to visit Keppel Club, he said: “Please come and visit us for a return match. I’m told by your Captain Adam that you will be visiting us in July next year. Please come earlier if you want to. We look forward to your visit.”

The final game with Palm Resort was more competitive. It fielded a strong team, probably thinking we were going to give them a big fight. The game ended with Palm Resort thumping Keppel Club 8 ½ to 1 ½, prompting Captain Kong to say, to laughter in the room, during lunch: “I will not allow these guys to play for Keppel when you come and visit us next year for the return match. I will field my club’s champion and past champions.”

Keppel Club’s three lady golfers, from left, Ms Pauline Tan, Mrs Susie Seow and Ms Chong Siew Fong, about to enjoy their breakfast.

Our three Keppel ladies with their new friends from Kluang Country Club.

Was Captain Kong serious, or was he saying that in jest? One thing was certain: he was very serious about his own game, as proven on this day – he and Vice-Captain Jamil Maksoem won the prize for the best pair from Keppel Club.

Green Committee member, Mr Loh Teck Heng (left), and Mr Tey Siang Lim fall prey to the lure of the durians before the tee-off at Kluang Country Club.

The Keppel golfers are grateful to Green Committee member, Mr Loh Teck Heng, for organising the three-day trip to Johor. He was ably assisted by Keppel staff Mr Yeo Chook Yuen and Mr Simon Ng.

We will be hosting our first Summer Tennis Camp at Keppel Club this year. The aim of this tennis camp is to help tennis players from within and outside our programmes to develop their technical and tactical play and introduce them to the game of tennis.

The camp is relevant to all players between the age of four and 18 years old. We also look to use the holiday mood to develop their passion for the game of tennis with team and individual competitions through the week.

In addition to our two-hour tennis lessons, we will also be offering a one-hour swim session as part of our camp, so the players are rewarded with a nice cool dip in the pool after two hours of tennis drills and games.

With high intensity exercises and lots of competition, we expect a lot of smiles and a lot of energy.

The tournament was played in four categories – Men’s doubles open, Men’s doubles combined age of 90, Men’s Veterans combined age of 120 and Ladies’ Doubles combined age of 80.

On the first day of the tournament, Keppel drew with CSC Team A two-all and beat CDE 3-1. The first day ended with the official dinner hosted by CSC.

On the second day, Keppel defeated PSC and CSC Team B, both with the score of 3-1. At the end of the day, Keppel topped the board followed by CSC Team A, while the third place went to PSC.

The tennis fraternity of Keppel Club went on a fun-filled, six-day tennis trip to the land down under from April 18 to 23 this year. The cool weather of Perth was perfect to combine golf, tennis and a little bit of sight-seeing. The group enjoyed playing social golf at Vines Golf and Country Club and a side trip to the vineyard called Lancaster Swan Valley, Swan River and Freemantle before playing the official tennis matches at the Floreat Park Tennis Club.

By Ashok Kumar, Assistant Manager, Sports

April 21 – The first day of tennis matches, the team played against the Floreat Park Tennis Team. The tennis convenors of the respective clubs, Mr Kamal Ehsan of Keppel Club and Mr Anthony Quahe of Floreat Park Tennis Club started the event with an exchange of plaques of appreciation. The tennis matches had a very exciting match-up which ended on a tied score of eight-all. Equally exciting was the fine dining dinner at an

Tennis trip to Perth, Australia

Italian restaurant hosted by the Floreat Park Tennis Club Members.

April 22 – On the second day, the matches were more social and friendly in nature. There were approximately 50 tennis players who took turns to play at the courts every 30 minutes. This format of play allowed them to partner and play with many other players present that day. The same night, the host club served a

sumptuous barbecue dinner the “Aussie” way.

The Keppel Club tennis players sure had an unforgettable experience and they are looking forward to more tennis trips as fun as this Australian tennis adventure.

Keppel Club’s tennis team emerged as the champions in the recently concluded Chinese Swimming Club (CSC) Invitational Tennis Tournament. The tournament was held on May 6 and 7 at the CSC roof top tennis courts. Four clubs participated in the tournament – the host CSC which was represented by two teams, Penang Sports Club (PSC), Club Darul Ehsan (CDE) from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and our very own Keppel Club (KC).
