Anita & JR Alkire President In the spirit of the change,

the Chapter Educator position

was eliminated so the Chapter

would focus on riding, socializing,

and fun. As they focus on riding, they

focus on sharing safety and that is

everyone’s opportunity to help others

learn from what you know. Specifically, if you’re a Master Tour Rider or

Co-Rider, you can help your fellow riders and co-riders learn from your

knowledge and experience. So please embrace these new ideas and re-

lease the past so together we can reshape our Association.

Your District Educator can print out by Chapter where each Member is

and what your Chapter might be needing. It is the responsibility of

the District Educator to be watching this. The message could be sent to

the Chapter Director and a responsible Master to assist our Members

with their levels. BUT, the District Educator and their Assistants

should be visiting your Chapter and bringing the message. The District

Educator should be evaluating the educational needs of the District and

then coordinating with the District Team to provide those opportuni-

ties.

EXCITING NEW PROGRAM COMING SOON! We have been working

with Honda to come up with a new recruiting idea. All of us at Home

Office are committed to growth and retention in GWRRA. To help us

gain some new Members we are going to introduce two new programs

within the next month

HONDA Dealer Program This one is really exciting and it’s coming from

two directions. One from Home Office and the other from the

Members who are calling and telling us they have dealers who want to

share our story and Membership. GWRRA will provide to a dealer a

special Membership application to GWRRA. The Dealer will be giving a

4-month free Membership to GWRRA (next page top)

.

when that person purchases a new or used Gold Wing, cruiser, or tour-

ing bike from their dealership. They will have a special “new member

line” to send the application to Home Office. We will immediately

process the new Membership and then send it to the District Director

so they can share it with their District MEP who will contact that

Member and get them involved. The sooner we offer that new Member

the opportunity to join us for a ride or education opportunity, the

sooner they will feel and experience all the benefits of Membership.

Home Office will then follow up with the Dealer and offer to send

Wing World Magazines to the dealership monthly, and more materials

if they wish. What we are asking of you is to talk with your favorite

dealer. Share with them this idea and see if they are interested. We

will have all the material they need on our website soon and you can

even take it in with you when you talk with them. If they want to par-

ticipate: 1. Send an email to [email protected] with the

dealer’s information and contact person. 2. Give us your name and

Member number so we know where this is coming from and can enter

you into our Thank You drawing. 3. Let the Dealer know that we will be

highlighting them as a Supporting Dealer and we will feature them on

our website and the Gold Book. This starts with you and your relation-

ship as that is always the best way. We, Home Office, will also be

reaching out to dealers about 30 days after the launch to give you the

first opportunity to talk with your Dealer. Membership Award Program

We are putting a new application together that will give each Member

in good standing with GWRRA the opportunity to give a 4-month Mem-

bership to the purchaser of their bike when they sell it (hopefully to

buy a new Gold Wing). We have the Membership transfer, but in most

cases, we are buying a new bike and don’t want to give up our Member-

ship in GWRRA. This way we get to spread the fun by giving that

purchaser the opportunity to join us and find out what “Friends for

Fun, Safety and Knowledge” is all about. This is also to say thank you

to all our loyal Members. So, have another great month, remember to

reach out and call someone on our ARL that you haven’t seen in a while

and invite them out for a ride or a conversation. Let’s help them

understand how important they are to all of us.

After May’s gathering

six of us took a ride to meet

Chapter Q at a prop rental

place in Gardena. The place

makes and rents characters such as The Hulk, Superman and

many other action figures. Then we were invited out to lunch

at Jersey Mike’s restaurant. Good food good company what

more could you ask for. Also the owner of Wing Stuff, was

there with his new 2018 DCT Goldwing.

May 12th the District put on an Education Day in Adelanto,

ARC and TRC Classes were offered plus a First Aid Class.

Trent and I went up Friday to set up the range for ARC. It was

windy and quite challenging, but with Big Mikes help we got it

done. We had three other of our Chapter members there,

Linda Flechtner did the ARC, Glenn Manness and Gary Black-

burn did the TRC.

In June, the only Rally is CA2N, Julie and Mike are visiting

Family in that area so they plan on attending. We have several

visitations scheduled, check out the Calendar and come join us.

Be sure to read the articles that Linda is doing on our newer

members, quite interesting. April was on Patrick, May was on

Julie & Mike, who knows what June will be.

Come join us for the ride

———————————————————————————————————— TIP: BOOTS. WEAR THEM!

It seems like common sense, but take a look around and notice how often you see riders in sneakers, loafers, and yes, even flip flops.

Sturdy, over-the-ankle boots can protect you from a variety of riding hazards. They protect against burns from hot exhaust pipes and getting pinged by flying road debris. Boots with oil-resistant, rubber-based composite soles will give you a strong grip on the pavement and help you keep your feet on the pegs. If the boots have heels, they should be low and wide. In case of a mishap, boots help provide valuable protection against foot and ankle injuries.

As the weather gets warmer we tend to find ourselves "shedding gear." Boot manufacturers make plenty of more comfortable and casual options that still offer the minimum level of protection you need when riding on the street.

ARC Class Highlights Risk management The proper gear:

If you want it cover it. Cover anything you want to use later in life. All the Gear All the Time! Proper Equipment: T-Clock T-Tires & Wheels C-Controls L– Lights O– Oil C– Chassis K– Kickstand Make sure your bike is in good riding condition when you ride. Check the date/age of your helmet. The proper attitude: Riding is more mental than physical. Don’t ride when you are upset, have a bad attitude are stressed or tired. Pull over relax and hydrate when you are tired. Watch the use of medicines that may cause adverse reactions when riding. Riding requires all your attention! The Weather: The heat: Carry water and keep hydrated. Stay covered to keep from dehydrating, use a cool vest. Watch out for road snakes, those tar lines that are soft and slick in the heat. The cold: Dress in layers, carry extra layers and heavier gloves for cold weather. Put your rain suit on before you hit the rain, don’t ride in the center of the lane where the oil accumulates or on the painted road lines, they are slippery. Keep a greater dis-tance from vehicles to allow more room to stop on slick roads. The Traffic: Look ahead of where you are traveling and anticipate hazards when you enter intersec-tions. Stay in the left lane, watch for left turning traffic, watch for wide right turning traffic and always watch the rear of your bike for traffic that doesn’t stop in time. Don’t follow hazardous vehicles, such as overloaded vehicles or vehicles carrying loads that may fall off and cause you to crash. Pass semi trucks quickly, don’t linger next to them a trailer tire might blow and they can’t see you. Animals and pedestrians: Watch for people on cell phones they will walk in front of you your bike is quiet. Watch for pets and children in urban areas and wild animals when you ride on country roads and in the mountains. Play the “what if” game.

SAA SEEK, ANTICIPATE, ACT.

Combine all your options by using your speed, direction and traffic, road conditions, weather, obstacles and communication to keep you safe as you ride.

May 6th, 2018

Jerry Chapter Director’s comments Trent asked us all to congratulate Jerry on retiring. Trent presented Jerry with a new full time riding partner, a stylish cow dressed in a leather jacket with glasses. Jerry showed us his new hand tooled leather wallet that he was presented with at work. The wallet had his catch phrase tooled on it, “Do what you can do” not bad words to live by. Jerry discussed the upcoming Education classes in Adelanto with Armando, Linda, Glenn and Gary participating from our Chapter. Jerry also asked us to be sure to check out the upcoming dinner ride to the Farm House because that is where our Christmas party will be held. Chapter Charity. Lois says we collected 25,211 can pull tabs last year. She says they are weighed and that is how she got the count. Very good! Getting to Know

One of the Herd Norm Barnard Norm's first bike was a

Honda 500 and he started riding

when he was 32 years old.

His first long bike trip was a

trip to Alaska with his 10 year

old son riding behind him on

a KZ 1100.

It was a 14 day trip and they

hit, rain, sleet, hail and road

construction.

Norm says he wants to go back to Alaska next month.

Jerry want to go with?

Norms first Gold Wing was a 1994 GL1500.

When asked about his career Norm says he’s a civil engineer

and has worked on Hydro Electric plants.

His favorite color is Blue and his favorite

food is Maine Lobster.

One of his hobbies besides motorcycling is Real-estate

When asked what would you like us to know about you,

Norm told me he wants a new bike.

Norm grew up in Montana.

Norm has ridden the 4-corners and the 3 Flags rides several

times and has ridden the Run to the Wall to Washington DC.

Norm tells me he is going on 750,000 miles on his motorcy-

cles so far.

Norm is a real rider so ask him about his rides and he can

probably tell you many great places to ride all across the

United States.

Thank you Norm

The Safety Officer of the Gold Angels is responsible for reviewing the training field for safety and helping to layout the practice/drill markings on the field. He also helps other riders ensure their motorcycles are safe to perform around other riders. The current Safety Officer for the Gold Angels is Rick Hinrichs.

12

Rick currently calls San Diego home. His riding career started some 54 years ago (WOW) at the tender age of 16. Motorcycles have always held a special place in Rick’s heart, so it’s no surprise that a motorcycle was his first choice of vehicles while going to high school. Besides, it was the only vehicle he could afford. (The truth comes out!). Since the initial motorcycle, Rick has logged well over 1,000,000 miles. Cruising all the way across this great country of ours to Key West, FL rates at the top of his favorites rides, but Glacier National Park in Mon-tana comes in at a very close second.

Rick never actually joined the Gold Angels. How can that be, you ask? Well in 1999, after watching the Arizona drill team perform, he and a few other riders de-cided to form their own California based team. Not only was Rick one of the founding members of the California Gold Angels motorcycle drill team, but he held the prestigious title of initial Co-Captain. Trying to narrow it down to a ma-neuver or two that would be considered his favorite is a difficult task. He enjoys any maneuver that requires a high degree of skill, precision and coordination with the other riders. Counter Circles, Squeeze Maneuvers, Pinwheel Pass Throughs are some of his favorites.

closed course environment with other riders that share the same passion and drive to be the best rider they can be. Then travel all around the country demon-strating these skills.

One year while volunteering in the position of Race Safety and Control Motors for the 120+ mile Baker to Vegas police relay race, he encountered a follow ve-hicle that was blinding runners and race officials with his lights. Rick instructed the driver to turn off his lights to which he refused and then attempted to drive through the baton exchange gate endangering runners and support personnel. Reacting quickly, Rick jumped off his motorcycle chased the vehicle latching onto the rear bumper before being dragged a few feet. The driver finally stopped, but not before the damage was done. Rick had simultaneously pulled both ham strings, along with major road rash, bruising and swelling to both legs, knees and hips. Those in the area watching commented that Rick looked like a “Bulldog” biting down on its prey refusing to let it go. The name stuck and Rick’s call sign is Bulldog

The Gold Angels is a “Not for Profit” organization. Each team member is a volunteer and responsible for the costs associated with his or her motorcycle. These costs also in-clude all travel expenses incurred during a performance and all practices. These riders do it because they truly enjoy it. For more information on the team visit them at www.goldangels.com or find them on Facebook.
