GREENS COMMITTEE REPORT by Pete Fronczek

Historically pin locations on our greens have been set according to a pattern,

e.g. front/middle/back. The Greens Committee recently recommended to the

Board of Directors that in the future Superintendent Glen MacDonald be

allowed to set pin locations on a random basis at his discretion without

following any pattern. The Board agreed with this recommendation. Why did

the Committee make this decision?

• It was done to protect our greens and reduce the chances that pins are put

in locations that are potentially unfair and result in member complaints.

Given the slope, size and increased speed of our greens (green speeds in

general are faster today than in the past), and that we usually change pin

locations daily in season, it is difficult for Glen to find enough suitable

places to do a set pattern of pin positions without doing potential damage

to our greens.

• Glen has always had the authority to deviate from a set pattern if one or

more greens shows signs of stress or disease and has frequently done so.

The Committee also reiterated that the new putting green can only be used for

putting. We have three practice greens – putting, chipping, and pitching. The

chipping and pitching greens can be used for all three of the above practice

activities while the putting green only for putting. It is in a location that makes

it dangerous to do otherwise and we do not want the green damaged by ball

marks.

TIPS N’ SIPS

Cripple Creek hosted the Delaware Women's Golf

Association short game clinic, Tips N’ Sips on Friday,

May 10th which was instructed by our Head Pro Brian

Trout and Teaching Instructor Tim Foran. The clinic

was sold out and even had a waiting list.

Everyone was amazed at the impeccable condition of

the practice facility. It provided ample space to teach

both chipping and sand shots to the divided group simultaneously.

Everyone raved about the food and the specialty drink, “Sun Kiss” that they enjoyed on the patio after the clinic.

Thank you to Cripple Creek member Sue Bennett for organizing this event!

The Ladies golf season is now in full swing! Our WPGA Golf Team has played

three matches so far. They are one and two with the final match against Rehoboth

at home coming up. The girls have all been playing well, we are just in a very

competitive division. Come out and support them June 6 starting at 12:00 for their

final match.

There are some exciting events on the horizon.

The Ladies Member Guest is in just a couple of weeks. Plans are coming together

for some fun times and if the weather cooperates everything should be perfect. The

Match Play Round Robin sign up sheet will be out soon. This tournament had a

great response last year and we are hoping even more will play this year. Playing in

this is a great way to hone your Match Play skills or to try it for the first time. Also

coming up is the famous Two Lady Tournament. This is one you definitely don’t want to miss. These

tournaments are open to members of the CCWGA only. The Ladies Club Championship and the Sr. Club

Championship, also coming soon, are open to all lady golfing members. All tournaments are flighted.

If you have not yet joined the CCWGA, you can do so at any time. We are a fun, welcoming group of ladies of

all skill levels and would love to have you join us. We play an organized event on Ladies Day, Wednesday, and

also arrange a few tee times on Mondays and Saturdays for some fun golf. If you have an interest in joining us or

learning more, please contact Cynthia Hunsberger 302.537-1937.

GOLF COMMITTEE REPORT by Glen Reid

Memorial Day weekend and the very successful Opening Day tournament are behind us and June will

be a busy month of golf. On June 3rd President George Walsh pits his President’s team against Past

President Tom Hunsberger’s team for bragging rights in the President’s Invitational. This event is

followed by the ever popular Member-Member tournament on the 8th, and the Ladies Member Guest

tournament on the 14th and 15th.

We just finished hosting the DIAA Delaware High School Championship won by the Tower Hill

School in Wilmington. The kids were amazing and Cripple Creek received rave reviews from the

players, parents and coaches. The low 36-hole score of 140 was registered by Phoebe Brinker from

Archmere Academy, in Claymont DE, winning her third individual championship in the last 4 years.

I know everyone is aware that you are expected to enter all of your scores (other than scramble or

alternate shot format scores) from both home and away rounds. An email was sent out to all members

on the 29th explaining in great detail what is required. There are boxes in each locker room where

completed scorecards are to be deposited. The Handicap Committee, chaired by Kent Sanderson, will

periodically compare postings and scorecards to ensure we are complying with USGA requirements.

There are no rules that restrict the number of tee time slots that can be reserved by one individual. Tee

times are opened ½ hour before the first tee time of the day 7 days in advance. Tee times can be

reserved on-line, by phone, and in person on a “first come first served” basis. Any reserved tee time

not populated 72 hours prior, that time or the unfilled portion of the tee time, will be released for

re-booking.

Another reminder about good stewardship and the courtesy on the golf course. We expect everyone to

replace/fill divots in the fairways, rake sand bunkers (both fairway and greenside sand bunkers), repair

pitch marks on the greens, pick-up your tees from the tee box, and be aware of your pace of play.

Pace of play will be very important as we move into the next 3 months when the golf course is most

active.

Lots of sunshine, and temperatures are getting up there, so please make sure you have plenty of water

and sun screen when you are on the course.

Enjoy the summer and hit’em straight.

A MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER by Brian Trout

Recently we needed to completely overhaul and upgrade our Thor Guard lightning detection system on the golf course. Having a lightning detection system is not mandatory for a golf course, but we take the safety of our members and their guests seriously while at the club. The new system is the latest and greatest in weather system technology and has some new features that will benefit everyone. The system allows for members to click on our personalized link giving instant access to either the live radar site, or an information page telling what the “status” is of the club (All Clear, Caution, Warning or Red Alert). This is especially nice to know during the summer months when storms form away from the beach. The live radar site is real-time data, not delayed, that is connected directly with the National Weather Service’s watches and warnings. As a reminder, when there is inclement weather in the area and the system sends a message of “Red Alert”, one long siren blast is sent telling all golfers to immediately suspend play and seek shelter. Three (3) short siren blasts are sent when the system detects “All Clear” allowing play to resume. The link to access the system is http://cripplecreekgolf.thormobile3.net which can be used on phone, tablet or home computer.
