GET READY FOR ANOTHER ROUND OF AURORA LIBRARY BREWS TOUR

For the fourth year, the Aurora Public Library is organizing the Aurora Craft Brews Tour to invite the community to explore Aurora and its exciting craft brew scene. With an expanded lineup of now 11 partners at 13 locations, the tour runs through Oct. 31.

Participating in the 2019 Aurora Craft Brews Tour is easy. First, pick up a passport at any Aurora Public Library branch or participating location or download it from AuroraLibrary.org. Then visit participating breweries by Oct. 31 and purchase a pint to receive a stamp on

your passport. Collect five stamps to receive a commemorative glass, or get 10 stamps to receive a glass growler. Prizes will be available until Nov. 7, or while supplies last, at all Aurora Public Library branches. For more information about the Aurora Craft Brews Tour and related events, visit AuroraLibrary.org.

JUST SKIP 2 FOR BETTER AIR QUALITY THIS SUMMEROver the summer, air quality becomes a big issue in the metro area. All that beautiful sunshine we love can come with a downside: ground-level ozone. Ground-level ozone is an invisible air pollutant that is created when emissions from cars and other sources “cook” in the sunlight. Colorado health officials warn ozone is cause for concern in both sensitive and healthy people and can lead to stinging of eyes and throat, chest pain, coughing and difficulty breathing.

You can have a powerful, positive effect on our air by reducing two car trips each week. Combining errand trips, packing your lunch or walking to lunch, carpooling and taking public transit, or filling up your gas tank and mowing your lawn after 5 p.m. on high ozone days help air quality. Find more tips at SimpleStepsBetterAir.org, a program of our partner, the Regional Air Quality Council.

Join us this summer by taking the #JustSkip2 Challenge for better air. Show how you cut two car trips in a week on social media and use the hashtag #JustSkip2.

LEGAL USE OF FIREWORKS IN AURORAThe sale, possession and use of certain fireworks is legal in Aurora. Here is what you need to know for a fun and safe Independence Day:

• Fireworks can be purchased and used in Aurora only from June 15 to July 4.

• Fireworks that DO NOT leave the ground or explode are allowed. Examples of allowed fireworks are fountains, wheels, sparklers, snakes and ground spinners. Examples of prohibited fireworks are firecrackers, bottle rockets, lady fingers, mortars, and roman candles.

• You must be 16 or older to possess or use fireworks, unless supervised by someone 21 or older.

• The city’s fire chief has the right to ban the sale, use, possession or discharge of fireworks as conditions dictate.

• Even legal fireworks can make loud noises that may be startling to those suffering from anxiety or PTSD, and to pets. Be courteous and respectful of those around you, and keep pets indoors in a safe, quiet place.

• To view the fireworks ordinance, go to AuroraGov.org/Fire. For more information, call Aurora Fire Rescue at 303.326.8999. The maximum possible penalty for a violation of the fireworks ordinance is a fine of up to $2,650 and/or up to one year in jail and other fees and costs as imposed by the court.

FIREWORKS IN COLORADO’S SEMI-ARID TO VERY-ARID CLIMATEAurora is situated in a dry part of the country and the use of recreational fires, grills, fire pits and even fireworks comes with fire risks. On a regular basis, Aurora Fire Rescue takes a close look at short- and long-range weather forecasts, fuel moistures, local and regional fire activity, and national preparedness levels. This evaluation could be followed by a ban on fireworks and other open flames. Conditions will continue to be monitored for the upcoming 4th of July holiday. The sale and use of fireworks will be dependent on these conditions.

Registration is happening now for the next 15-week-long academies, with the daytime academy starting Aug. 5 and the evening academy kicking off Aug. 13.

The free academies offer participants a working knowledge of the department through a series of interactive classes. Graduates will gain knowledge that they can implement to enhance the quality of life in their respective neighborhoods. It’s the police department’s hope that graduates will become partners in identifying problems and solutions to the crime issues affecting the community.
