June 2019 A New Command A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this a people wi know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. John 13:34-35 Often when I read this passage I stop my thought at the colon, and my mind focuses on the command to love one another. It is true that we are to love one another. We love God by loving people, but what is new about that? Jesus said it was a new command; the command to love is old, 10 commandment type old, so again, what is new? To find the “new” part of the command, we must read the clause immediately following the colon: “just as I have loved you.” Loving others is great, but what is that? To love is to want, will, and act for the good of another to the extent of your ability. Jesus said we are to love just as He has loved us. We must become intimately familiar with the Gospel story, the story of Jesus and learn to love as He loved, serve as He served, and live as He lived. As followers of Jesus we learn from Him how to love, and when we do, the world will know we are His disciples. How is Jesus inviting you to love just as He loved? A New Command A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just

as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one

another. John 13:34-35

Often when I read this passage I stop my thought at the colon, and my mind focuses on the command to love one another. It is true that we are to love one another. We love God by loving people, but what is new about that? Jesus said it was a new command; the command to love is old, 10 commandment type old, so again, what is new? To find the “new” part of the command, we must read the clause immediately following the colon: “just as I have loved you.”

Loving others is great, but what is that? To love is to want, will, and act for the good of another to the extent of your ability. Jesus said we are to love just as He has loved us. We must become intimately familiar with the Gospel story, the story of Jesus and learn to love as He loved, serve as He served, and live as He lived. As followers of Jesus we learn from Him how to love, and when we do, the world will know we are His disciples. How is Jesus inviting you to love just as He loved?

Greater Highline / Tukwila Young Life

Every summer, our Young Life leaders take teenagers from the area, mostly unchurched, to a Young Life camp where they spend a week being loved on, having ridiculous amounts of fun, and most importantly, experiencing the good news of Jesus Christ every day. This summer, we are FILLING 4 BUSES – taking 85 kids on 4 different camp trips (High School, Middle School, Teen Moms and Discipleship).

A week of camp does come at a price: an average of $600 per spot. Most teens and their families in our area cannot afford the full cost of camp, even with fundraising opportunities. Here’s what you can do to help us get them there:

1. Take a cardboard “bus” home from church today.2. Fill the bus with cash, change, or checks during the next 3 weeks. 3. Pray for the GHT Young Life mission each time you put money in the bus.4. Bring the bus back to any service, any weekend, until June 8-9 and park it in the designated lot (the Young Life table in the Atrium).5. If you prefer online giving, visit ght.younglife.org and look for the bus

Thank you for helping local kids meet Jesus!

(*If you write a check, please make checks payable to “Young Life” and leave the memo line blank.)

World Outreach ReportTaking Christ to

Difficult LocationsHow do we take the gospel into countries that refuse to let missionaries in? Do people all around the globe deserve the knowledge of Jesus’ love and his offer of salvation? Can I be used as a tool for God even if I haven’t had formal Bible training?

Folks, all of these questions have great answers! We serve a mighty God who is able to make Himself known even when powers on earth are against Him!

During the month of June, we will be privileged to meet and fellowship with some of God’s special servants who are intent on overcoming our earlier questions! They are putting feet to the command Jesus shared just before He returned to heaven when he said, “As you go, make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you, and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Indeed, we must be wiser than serpents but harmless as doves as we go about doing God’s work!

We have been honored to help in the support of this family, who serve in a very dangerous area of our world. Todd, Jessica, and their family will be in our area this month. Besides being able to fellowship with us on various occasions, we will be able to hear from them and learn more of what they are doing during the last weekend of June. Plan to come out to hear just how God is working through them to plant the knowledge of Him where the formal “powers” would rather not have any Christian influence produced! We will have an evening of sharing June 30 beginning at 6:00 pm in The Atrium. There will be food, fellowship, and praise as they tell of how God is being made known!

See you there!

Steve Moreland

A huge thank you goes to Katie Taylor for her years of service in the Early Childhood area at Highline. Katie began as a volunteer then was first was hired at eight hours per week. As the ministry grew, so did Katie’s hours and responsibilities. Under her leadership, Katie helped move the early childhood ministry from the South Building to the newly constructed North Building Education Wing. She helped launch a new check-in system freeing us of an out-dated pager system. Katie has been attentive to the needs of Early Childhood families providing personal care to those with special needs, critter invasions, and parenting crises. Katie also decorated the space, weekly delivered engaging lessons of the Big God Story, and equipped teachers with ready-to-go supplies.

Katie will be “graduating” to the South Building and will be serving our kindergarten - 2nd grade families. We’re so grateful for Katie’s years of service in Early Childhood. Her input, wisdom, and knowledge will continue to have an affect even as Katie focuses her attention on young elementary children. Her expertise is in elementary education; she has several years experience in a classroom setting — especially with second graders. She loves the challenge of multi-age teaching, seeing benefits to all students. We can’t wait to see how God works in children and families at Highline.

Thanks for your prayer and support as all of the ministries transition to summer programming and changes in classroom teachers and ministry leadership!

Mount St. Helens Trip

Mount St Helens is a treasure in our back yard. In 1980 the eruption caught scientists and residents off guard, but not God Almighty who is in control of everything.

Set aside Saturday, August 5th to visit this magnificent mountain. This is an all-day activity with the curator of the museum guiding us up the mountain. Two hikes are planned, a short hike to Cold Water Dam and one for 2 1/2 miles for a medium hike. Sign up will begin the second week in July.

Call Connie about any questions .
