T h e L o v e o f J e s u s A Sermon series on 1 Corinthians 13

In his book, Loving the Way Jesus Loves, Phil Ryken, current president of Wheaton College and former pastor of Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, does a wonderful job of expounding the well-known “love chapter” of 1 Corinthians by connecting what love is and is not to the life and work of Jesus. Dr. Ryken’s Scripture selections will provide the texts from which Pastor Mackay and I will preach as we spend time seeking to better understand the love of Jesus, of which we are recipients and by which we love God and others. Dr. Ryken’s book will be provided to small group leaders and will be available in the Book Nook for any others who would like to have a personal copy for reading and studying. ∎

May 2019 Session Highlights The elders of First Presbyterian Church meet monthly on the fourth Tuesday. The following are some highlights from the May 28, 2019 meeting.   • The Session and Diaconate are both studying the Westminster Confession of Faith. The Confession is a summary of our denomination’s theological standards. This month the elders looked at the second chapter of the Confession, “Of God and the Holy Trinity.” (You can find a copy of the Westminster Confession of Faith on the ARP website at http://arpchurch.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Confession-of-Faith.pdf)

•  Stewardship and Finance reported that as of the end of April 2019 tithes and offerings toward the church’s general budget are at 32% of the annual budget. This is on par with the average of 31% (2014-2018) our church has historically received by the end of April. Praise was given to God in prayer for His financial blessing.

•  The Session received Justin Wise as a new member by reaffirmation of faith, as well as his daughter, Autumn, as a non-communicant member.

•  The Session approved a Memorandum of Agreement with the Lake Wales Charter Schools, allowing for Bok Academy North to utilize a significant portion of our facilities in the 2019-2020 school year. More information on this decision can be found in the Bok North article of this issue

of the Diligent.

• The chairmen of the committees of the Session gave reports of the work and ministry they are overseeing (see the ministry sections of the Diligent for more on these ministries). Prayer

was offered after each report, asking for the Lord’s guidance and blessing.

• A season of prayer was had for various needs within our congregation, community, and world. Matters of particular concern for prayer were the Bridge Europe mission team trip (5/29-6/4), World Witness’ 2-2-20 initiative for potential missionaries, FPC’s commitment to church planting in our community, our grieving members, our brothers and sister facing health concerns, and the spiritual well-being of those we are called to shepherd. ∎

Bok North is coming for

the 2019-2020 School Year

The Lake Wales Charter Schools (LWCS) opened Bok Academy North (middle school) in August of 2018. This new school was made up of sixth graders only during the 2018-2019

school year. Bok North used classrooms at First Baptist Church as well as the gymnasium and field space (on the west corner of Central Avenue and 3rd Street) here at FPC. The inaugural group of sixth graders will now rise into seventh grade and will be joined this coming school year by a new class of sixth graders for a total of 400 students in 2019-2020. In order to accommodate this new growth, the LWCS made a formal request to the …continues on page 4

Continued from page 3… Session of the First Presbyterian Church to use ten classrooms on our campus in addition to the gymnasium and field space for the upcoming, 2019-2020 school year. The Session initially approved the request at a called meeting on May 7 and finalized a Memorandum of Agreement with LWCS on May 28. Just to be clear, our agreement with the LWCS is for the 2019-2020 school year only.   Hosting a publicschool is not our chief mission here at FPC. However, we do seek to be good neighbors in our community and we believe for this one year that hosting Bok North is an opportunity for us to show the love of Christ to our community, specifically to the students, families, faculty, and staff of Bok Academy North. We have enjoyed numerous ministry opportunities in the past to Bok Academy (at Crooked Lake), Lake Wales High School, and Polk Avenue Elementary in particular. We trust that this coming year with Bok North students and faculty on our campus will present new opportunities for us to do that even more. Please be in prayer for the principal - Mrs. Donna Drisdom, the faculty and staff, and the students and families of Bok North. Pray for the Lord’s blessing upon them in the coming school year. Pray also for his provision of a permanent home for the school beginning with the 2020-2021 school year. Pray for us as well, that we would be gracious hosts, showing hospitality to the people of Bok North to the glory of God.   The rooms Bok North will be using are located in Lecture Halls A and B, Nelson Hall, and the Family Life Center. In order to have the needed ten rooms, Lecture Hall B (formerly the south end of our old fellowship hall) will be converted into two larger rooms with dividers, thus providing four classrooms for the school (see the yellow

highlighted rooms in the floor plan). The construction project will be at the expense of the Lake Wales Charter Schools. This renovation will remain upon Bok North’s departure and will be a welcomed update of that space, being useful for our future ministry needs. Whitehead Construction will begin work on this very soon (under the oversight of our Buildings and

Grounds Committee), so be on the lookout for the work in progress throughout the summer.    There are a few of our adult small groups that will be particularly affected by Bok North’s occupation of their rooms. (Note that none of our children’s ministry or music ministry spaces will be affected.) Most of these

groups have begun to consider their best options for carrying on small group discipleship in a different space or in a shared existence with Bok for the next year. Pastor Mackay and I will be in touch with small group leaders to help facilitate necessary discussions and decisions that affect small groups.

There are plenty of other details to be worked out and communicated in the days and weeks ahead. There is a small group of elders and deacons who will working together with the folks from LWCS and Bok North to see that our relationship is a strong one. That group, along with the staff of FPC, will do its best to share updated and pertinent information with you as quickly and as often as possible in the days, weeks, and months to come. In the meantime, if you have any questions, feel free to reach out to our Director of Administration, Maria Herman ([email protected]), who can direct your inquiry to the right person. ∎

Last summer, it was a sobering thought to imagine sweeping through the entire Bible in only 25 weeks. With 66 books before us, this meant we needed a 2.64 book per week average to finish; a quick pace! Now that we’ve crossed the finish line (or landed the plane, to maintain the metaphor), we look back on many Scriptural jewels uncovered and many questions raised. But, what now? How can we use this effort to speed our pursuit of Christ? One of the main takeaways for me, and one I’ve been blessed to hear from some of you, is the overall accessibility or clarity of Scripture. By God’s grace, the core truths of Scripture can be understood.

In the first night of our study, we surveyed all 66 books and made the point that while the Biblical narrative is sweeping and complex, it reflects a simple underlying structure. We often use the words, “Creation - Fall - Redemption” to describe this structure. In Genesis 1-3 we see God’s creation of the universe and the fall of all humanity into sin. Then, beginning in Genesis 3, we see God’s promise of redemption. This begins a long history of redemption, through Exodus, Law, Kingdoms, Prophets, and, finally, to Jesus Christ. Scripture can intimidate us with its complexity, but in all this complexity of God’s self-revelation there is one concurrent theme: Redemption! If you’re past Genesis 3, you know what’s going on: God revealing Himself, and the details of his plan to save His people.

Now, just because we say that Scripture is clear is not the same as saying that it’s all easy to understand. Our Confession states, “All things in Scripture are not alike plain in themselves, nor alike clear unto all (2 Pet. 3:16).” So, while we are encouraged by the plainness of God’s saving plan (again, from the Confession: “those things which are necessary to be known, believed, and observed for salvation, are so clearly propounded, and opened in some place of Scripture or other, that not only the learned, but the unlearned, in a due use of the ordinary means, may attain unto a sufficient understanding of them.”) we are also challenged to faithful, God-dependent study of the Scriptures. Like mining for ore within a mountain, diligent exploration will yield precious treasure!

Finally, the more we understand from Scripture, the more we need to apply it to our lives. Especially in the sense of understanding the world through the Scriptural lens. Dr. Rob Gustafson, President of Erskine College and Seminary, visited our church this week and remarked that Erskine hires professors who “put on the glasses of God’s Word” to view the world. We need God to use His Word to adjust our worldview! It makes all the difference in our daily lives that our salvation is sure, that God is moving toward a glorious end for His people, and that our true satisfaction will be found not in the accumulation of things and worldly honor, but in knowing the glory of God.

My prayer is that after a sprint through the Bible, we would first and foremost be encouraged to read it, because we can understand it. Would you pray that with me?

In Christ,Mackay

P.S. Every home bookshelf should have resources to help you study the Bible. Here are three:Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the Whole Bible. This timeless classic is available in numerous formats (including completely free online). Henry explains and interprets all of the Bible in a condensed, easily digestible way.

A good study Bible. Scholars condense massive amounts of knowledge and help into interpretive notes and articles that accompany the Biblical text. It can be a challenge that there is no end to the publication of new Study Bibles. Here are two to start with: The ESV Study Bible, published by Crossway, and The Reformation Study Bible, published by Ligonier Ministries.

The Message of the Old Testament: Promises Made and The Message of the New Testament: Promises Kept by Mark Dever. Dever is Senior Pastor of Capital Hill Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. He preached 66 sermons on each book of the Bible, and they have been printed in this two-volume set. ∎

Teaching On the heels of completing The Bible from 30,000 Feet on Wednesday nights, it is providential that The Quarterly, the adult curriculum produced by the ARP church, covers Daniel and Revelation this quarter. The two books are intimately related in imagery and content; it will be a fascinating study! The Saltshakers currently use The Quarterly. Let Mackay know if your class would like to give it a try.

Service The newest adult small group (who really needs to decide on a name) is serving at Community Kitchen on June 2nd. This function of Lake Wales Care Center provides a restaurant experience for folks in our community who aren’t able to have one themselves.

Save the Date: Adult Small Group Breather Series July 28th to August 11th Adult Small Groups are invited to join together in the Chapel following Morning Worship. The three-week series will explore the nature and purpose of Discipleship, and will culminate in Discipleship Sunday on August 18th.

Small Groups Teaching - Fellowship - Outreach - Service

The 2018-2019 Ekklesia season has concluded. Thank God for His provision of food, fellowship, and unity throughout the year. It is humbling to consider all God has done through His Word and through conversations around tables.

Highlights from this year:•Our adults went through The Bible from 30,000 Feet, surveying every Biblical book over the course of 25 weeks. We got a glimpse of the grand sweep of Scripture: God’s creation, the devastating fall of humanity into sin, and God’s plan of redemption culminating in Jesus Christ.

• Laney and her formidable team faithfully discipled our children each week, while Shane led our youth ministry Wednesday nights. It was a joy to have our middle and high school students eat with the large group this year!

• Fellowship Nights: Oct 24 and April 24 saw two rounds of hard-fought trivia shared by all ages. No one will ever look at a Brannock Device the same way!

• On Dec 12, we left Fellowship Hall for s’mores and Christmas carols outside.

• After the overhaul of our Reiger pipe organ, Vince led a tour around its improved capacities and new voices. We are thankful for such a beautiful instrument to aid us in worship.

• For an early February weekend, many of our married couples were taught by Dr. Paul Tripp via a video livestream. Dr. Tripp presented the glorious hope of the Gospel for our marriages, and challenged us to guide our spouses to Jesus each day.

Please voice your thanks to those that made it all happen:Our kitchen/service team: Michael Berkau, Pat Frankenburger, Mary Youmans, Mary Campbell, Kay Clegg, Karen Montgomery, Dayle Dierks, Bob and Bea Meeker, Chip and Donna Carter, plus all who took money and organized clean-up. Our Ekklesia Kidz team: Laney Reynolds, Cindy Nelson, Amy Ballentine, Angie Crews, Morgan and Patti Roe, Teresa Bass, and our beloved Max Linton.

Please be praying as the Discipleship Committee discusses and plans Ekklesia 2019-2020 this summer. Pray that God would lead us to greater heights of encouragement, greater depths of service and humility, and, overall, a greater love for Jesus. See you for our inaugural Ekklesia on September 4th!

O u t r e a c hM i s s i o n s & Montage Church

in Los Angeles From Rev. Leon Brown

Rev. Leon Brown is planting Montage Church in Los Angeles. We are privileged to have him join on us on Sunday, October 20, 2019, where he will preach in our morning worship as well as in the evening for a special Missions Sunday emphasis. We look forward to October. Below is a brief introduction to Leon and to Montage Church.    Perhaps to your surprise, Los Angeles is as religious as many other cities in the south and on the east coast. Here, the residents take their spirituality very seriously. They read about it, defend it, and proselytize. What makes my city different, however, is the entertainment industry. People from all over the world move to L.A. to pursue an acting career. Often, they move here with nothing but the hope of gaining everything. Unfortunately, seldom do those dreams become a reality, and many people leave Los Angeles more broken than when they arrived.   While the film and television industry is a catalyst for moving to southern California, Los Angeles is also home to the Lakers (and Lebron James), the Clippers, some of the best food in the USA, and diverse cultural expressions. Sameness, therefore, is not a word that can be used to describe this city. Sameness is also not a word that wholly describes the universal church. The universal church is rich in colors and cultures. L.A., therefore, provides a terrific opportunity to see a church birthed that will be a little taste of heaven.   According to Jesus, we ought to pray, “Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (Matt. 6:10). What does heaven look like? The apostle John saw “a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages” (Rev. 7:9). L.A. is home to more than 140 nations. Whether rich or poor, Black, White, Brown, or Yellow, everyone in Los Angeles has the same need—a reconciled relationship with Jesus of Nazareth and each other.   As a church planter, it is my privilege to be the bearer of good news (Rom. 8:1). When the Holy Spirit moves upon the hearts of the hearers (Jn. 3:3), they participate in the vertical and horizontal aspects of the gospel. This is tantalizing to the ears of L.A. residents. People in Los Angeles are lonely, and the relationships that they do have are

sometimes based on performance. To hear that God loves them because of the work of someone else, namely Jesus, and that he is willing to usher them into a community, namely the local church, that is also not based on performance is contrary to anything they’ve heard. It’s why many L.A. residents are willing to hear this good news.   As we go about the work of church planting, will you pray for us? Please pray that the Holy Spirit continues opening doors of opportunity for us to share the gospel. Also, please pray that my wife and I would spend time in the scriptures together, as well as with our children. Lastly, please pray for our financial needs. We still need to fundraise several hundred thousand dollars. (Our rent is $5900! That will give you a taste of how expensive L.A. is). If you would like to keep up with our progress in church planting you can like Montage Church on Facebook. If you’re willing to financially support us, you can do that online (www.MontageChurch.LA) or send financial contributions to:  Montage Church P.O. Box 360891 Los Angeles, CA 90036  I look forward to meeting you in the fall. God bless you! ∎

John Miller has been working with various community leaders to create a working list of service and ministry opportunities in Lake Wales. The list John has compiled can be a great resource if you, your family, or your s m a l l g r o u p a r e l o o k i n g f o r opportunities to serve Christ by serving others in the Lake Wales community.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:8-10

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” Colossians 3:23-24

You may not be able to travel to France, or help out for one of our upcoming summer camps, but you can serve God and His people. There are many opportunities. None of us may be named Esther, but God has uniquely gifted and positioned each of us where we are at this present time and stage of our life (whatever the age). Go to the link below to view a listing of some opportunities to serve others in our community this summer. Thank you for your continued service to our King. ∎

I Can’t Sing!

www.Fpclw.org 16 N 3rd St, Lake Wales, FL 33853 (863) 676 - 0711

From Vince Treadway

M u s i cM i n i s t r y

I wish I had a dime for every repetition of the phrase, “I can’t sing!” I have heard myself or that I have heard from other musicians as they talk about their own churches.  I would have a nice little nest egg for my retirement!  What is interesting about this phrase is that it has several underlying meanings. Among them are: 1) I don’t like the sound of my voice, and am self-conscious about others hearing it; 2) I was told as a child that I couldn’t sing and I should keep quiet; 3) Here comes that Music Director and he/she is going to ask me to join the choir and I don’t want to; 4) I don’t enjoy singing and so it is easier just to say I can’t sing; 5) I enjoy singing, but I’ve never received any training and so I feel somewhat inadequate.  I would like to offer some thoughts for consideration to those who may fall

into any of the categories I have mentioned, or any that I have not mentioned.  First, with very few exceptions, most everyone can sing.  They may not like their voice, they may not be able to control it very well, they may not be a soloist, but most everyone can sing.  These “issues” with the voice can be improved with moderate, faithful effort.  I am willing to work with anyone who would like to improve his or her voice for the glory of God.  With some basic techniques to strengthen things such as breath support, finding your optimum range, matching pitches, and more, most everyone can improve their singing (and speaking!) voice.  If you are intimidated to lift up your voice in praise during congregational singing because you don’t want anyone to hear you, please come and see me!  Let’s work together for a little while to help you build confidence and understanding how your voice works, and what to do to make it better.  If you would feel more comfortable coming for some vocal instruction with a small group of 2-4, that’s fine too!

Second, singing in worship is not optional; it is commanded, many times!  God knows exactly how your voice sounds because He made it, and yet He still commands you to sing.  So, in order to be obedient to the Lord everyone must lift up his or her voice in song.  This is a joyful command, however, and a command that reaps many wonderful benefits.  Participating in worship by singing makes you one with the other members of the congregation and together we praise God with greater fervor and joy!  Singing is good for your health and increases your oxygen and energy levels.  Did you know that the sound waves that a congregation creates together begin to sync and become greater than each individual voice?  The same phenomenon happens with a pipe organ (and makes it distinctive, even from a very fine electronic organ) because the pipes that are vibrating cause the other pipes to vibrate and “sing” along with them!  Your singing enlivens and encourages those around you to sing, and together we can praise the Lord in ways that are not possible when we are alone.  So please, put aside your fears and inhibitions, and sing and make a joyful sound to the Lord!  If you want to learn more about your voice, come and see me, and find out how much fun singing can be! ∎

In our house, camp has become synonymous with summer.  Before the school year ends, we usually register for at least a few camps and plan the rest of our summer activities around them; at some point, everyone in our house ends up at camp.  Our usual line up is Mega Sports Camp, Quest, Horizon, and Stay-At-Home Work Camp, which seems to be a modest lineup compared to the abundance of camps available for our choosing!  From what I see, there is hardly an activity for our kids for which we cannot find a summer camp from sports to technology, science to art, and music to marine life!  I’d like to try to sprinkle in a few of my own inventions for our family like “cleaning camp” and “study camp,” but I don’t think these would go over quite as well.     So, what makes camp so great, anyway?  In the article “Growing Without Limitations” published in the Journal of Youth Development, camp is said to be a powerful experience because it involves prolonged exposure to persons, places, and spaces in an experience-based learning environment (Garst et al., 2009).  To me, this sounds like a formula: time + people + place + learning.  For camp, we take time together (typically one week) with a generally well-matched group of people (similar ages, interests, etc.) and put them in a designated place to teach them new information.  During the camp, people connect to one another through shared experiences and leave changed because they have built new or stronger relationships and know information they did not know before. Ta-da! Great camp experience!     All that is to say, kids can have a great experience at any kind of camp, such as soccer camp, horse camp, or even roofing camp, but now let’s think about the eternally transforming power that camp can have for our kids’ when we center the learning purpose on God’s Word!  The many activities of camp are fun and add to their shared experiences, but nothing can change our kids forever like the Holy Spirit when we give Him time + Christian

leaders + a place together + the Gospel message of Jesus Christ.  He has the power to bring transformation!    This summer, we have three great camp experiences right here at church for our kids to be a part of without leaving home!  Mega Sports Camp is an energetic and exciting week led by many of you right here at church and is infused daily with God’s Word.  Fine Arts Camp is an arts extravaganza for our kids to spend a week singing, playing instruments, dancing, and creating visual arts all based on God’s Word!  And lastly, our children’s Sunday school theme for the summer is Sunday School Camp!  From June through the beginning of August, our kids will experience learning Old Testament stories about God’s laws and His servants in a campout scene in the children’s department.  I want to encourage you to take advantage of these times for camp this summer that will steep your kids in the only learning that has the power to change them forever! (Acts 2:42-47) ∎
