For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “

plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

(Jeremiah 29:11)

Dear Friends, Hello! As I write this I am in MA surrounded by packed moving boxes and the last minute to-do items before the U-Haul truck arrives tomorrow. Inside those boxes are all the obvious things brought when moving to a new home, yet far more important than the possessions are the prayers, plans, and hopes being brought to Hillsboro, NH for our shared ministry together. God has called us all to the ministries that you have envisioned over these past several months, exploring all that is good, meaningful and special and will continue to thrive, as well as those struggling or even lost ways of faithful connections and outreach that have slipped away and are greatly missed. The hope for the future comes in some ways that will be new, and in some ways that will be renewing. As the beautiful hymn, In the Bulb There is a Flower reminds us, “From the past will come the future; what it holds a mystery, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.” One of my first goals is to meet the members and friends of the congregation, connect with community resources and to meet with area clergy over the summer. The most important thing I will be doing in each of these conversations is listening. What are the joys and concerns you have for Smith Memorial Church? What are you passionate about? What make you, you? My ministry with you begins on June 1 where I will be at the Farmer’s Market in the morning and then unpacking boxes in the church office. (P.S. Thank you to all who have updated and refreshed the pastor’s office!). Later that evening we will be enjoying the music and fun of the Open Door Coffee House. Then on Sunday we will worship and celebrate Communion together, worship with the residents of Hillsboro House and later welcome our Family Promise guests. Hope to see you at one or some of these events, or the many other occasions throughout June! This is an exciting time and I am eager to minister to and with all of you. Blessings of grace, peace and joy,

Donna

This spring a feeling of anticipation could be felt at Smith Church. During the first weekend in March, the Search Committee hosted the Rev. Donna Vuilleumier and her husband, Bill, for a week-end of events. The diverse occasions afforded many of us a chance to meet and get to know Donna a bit. Following the Sunday worship service of March 3rd, Donna was unanimously and quickly called to become the next settled pastor of Smith Church. The activity level increased immediately. Donna visited Hillsborough several times - to meet with the Trustees, etc. Rev. Carolyn Keilig, our interim, worked diligently to prepare our congregants, the church body, and the facilities for the transition. The nursery room, thanks to the creativity of the Twenty Somethings, became a sweet welcoming setting for our youngest visitors. A group met to plan for a fresh coat of paint in the Pastor’s Study and to discuss other updating strategies. Tom Butler of Hillsborough graciously offered to donate his painting expertise for the office renovation as his gift to Smith Church and the greater community. Tom was very familiar with our church, having done much painting here (including the sanctuary ) before. Edmund’s Hardware of Henniker and Antrim responded with a discount for the painting supplies, continuing their tradition of community sensibility. The next time you see Tom around town, or pop into Edmund’s for something, please mention appreciation for these significant donations. With all of this activity, March became May quickly! The parsonage was competently made ready for the arrival of Donna and her family. A cleaning crew extraordinaire of Val Kulbacki, Janet Sieg, Deb Whitney, and Barbara Daley made the house sparkle. Jon and Noah Daley undertook some minor repairs while Noah also mowed the lawn. Doug Hatfield and Val Kulbacki also turned their attention to cleaning up the garden beds on Blair Avenue. Judy Hatfield and Pam Cornwell added welcoming touches of fresh flowers, plants, and a stocked pocket pantry. When the moving trucks rolled in on both Saturday and Sunday, a crew of Jay, Jean and Brian Crowley, Barbara and Phil Daley, Chip Dalphond, Mike Bradley and his friend, Jimmy, Fran Charron and Harry Morehouse assisted the Vuilleumier family with getting things off of the trucks and into the house. Finally, after the dust settled, Donna was touched by the brimming Welcome Basket from the folks of Smith Church. These preparations represent a lot of effort - something for which Smith Memorial Congregational Church and its people are known. Thank you for making this milestone a reality! Please plan to worship at Smith on June 2nd as Donna begins her ministry with us.

Strong Living Exercise Group ~ Healthy Living

Exercise continues on Mondays and Thursdays at 9 AM. We are happy to see some of our snowbirds returning! Join us for laughter, sharing and exercise developed by Tufts especially for seniors. Join us, although mostly women, men are always welcome, too!

The family of,

Villa Ramsay

will be hosting an open house style gathering of friends at her home,

Sunny Ridge 97 Deering Center Road, Deering

on June 30, from 2-5 pm.

Please come and share a story or two of your connection with Villa.

As you are receiving your KYP, we are welcoming our families for the week of June 2-9. We are expecting a total of nine, 3 moms and 6 children, but the program is fluid and could change as families find housing and new families join the program. Once again, all meals for the week have been signed up for. At the time of this writing, we are still looking for a few people to do overnights. Thanks to everyone who has volunteered. You are all awesome! If you would like to know more about the program or would like to get involved, contact Barbara Daley or Fran Charron. We are also pleased to say that we were the solution for one family who was part of the program. Our third floor apartment at the Dubben House has become the affordable housing needed by a mom and her two children.

The Stewardship Committee is currently finalizing this year’s Red Sox Raffle. We will be selling raffle tickets for a chance to win 4 right field box seat tickets to the Red Sox versus the Baltimore Orioles game on Saturday, August 17, 2019. We are currently in contact with WEEI to include a visit to the WEEI press box for a half an inning along with hotel accommodations at the Boston Hotel Buckminster for the evening so you won’t have to worry about driving home after the game. Accommodations will be one room, 2 queen beds, and living area. Tickets will be $5 each or 3 for $10. We plan on holding the drawing on August 1, 2019 at the Butler Park Summer Concert Series and you need not be present to win. Tickets will be available for purchase in the next couple weeks. You will be able to purchase tickets by contacting the church office at 603-464-3529 or Larry DeLacy at 603-547-0625 if interested in purchasing tickets. You can also purchase tickets at the Farmer’s Market. You could also contact anyone on the Stewardship Committee; Nancy Shee or Jean Mogan.

There will be a special mission offering held on June 9, 2019 for Strengthen the Church as part of the 5 for 5 collections through the United Church of Christ. This collection supports church growth, pastoral and lay leadership development, youth and young adult ministries within conferences and administered by Local Church ministries.

The Stewardship Committee is taking up a special second collection on Sunday, June 23, 2019. Our hope is everyone will participate in this effort to help raise money to offset the church’s 2019 budget. Our goal is to have everyone give whatever their usual weekly contribution is to this extra collection. So if you usually give $10 a week, on June 23 you would give $20: your usual offering plus the special offering. But if that’s not possible, we would appreciate whatever you are able to contribute. Through your efforts we can continue to support Smith Church and its many programs, and we thank you for your continued support. We also ask that you make out a second check for this collection to make it easier to separate it from the weekly collection.

As our wonderful choir gets ready to take a well-deserved rest for the summer, I'd like to take this opportunity to say "thank you" for all the time and hard work that each one of you puts in. Your heart-felt musical offerings truly enhance our worship service!

Linda Bissonnette Happy Summer!

The June gathering of the Prayer Shawl will be on Wednesday morning, the 19th. As usual, we will meet at my house from 10:00ish to 12:00ish. It is always an enjoyable morning with lively conversation, coffee, tea and goodies and some knitting. It is open to all and always fun when new people join us. Knitting is optional, but if you would like to, yarn, needles and directions are all provided. And, if you would like to have a shawl blessed for someone, just let me know. If you have questions or need directions to my house, call me, Judy Hatfield, at 464-3458

Smith Church participates in the teen bag

program with three other churches: Methodist Church, St. Mary’s and Deering

Congregational.

We need the supplies by the first of the month so that we can assemble the bags.

For information call Harry Morehouse 464-4016.

We need the following monthly:

25 mac-n-cheese cups, 25 Chef Boyardee cups, 50 juice boxes and 50 snacks (pudding cups, fruit cups and cereal bars.) The meals must be microwaveable as these teens may

not know where their next meal may be coming from.

Summer has finally arrived and the farmer’s market in Butler Park will begin on the first Saturday in June. Baked goods are needed for our table in early June, please consider baking. As produce from your garden comes in later, it is also welcome. We also need people to set up, sell our goods and take down. Spending 3 hours in the park is a great place to greet old friends and meet new people. By the end of the summer, we always have established weekly customers. A sign up sheet will be on the back counter in the vestry. Please consider signing up, many hands creates a shared ministry.

We have revitalized the Growth and Evangelism Committee, better known as G&E. Our first two endeavors have concluded. On May 10th we sponsored a pot luck supper. Although we had planned to also do paper bag skits, we abandoned that idea when people were happy just to enjoy a good meal and visit. Our second endeavor was a book study of Kate Braestrup’s book, “Here If You Need Me.” We met four consecutive Monday nights to discuss some of the ideas presented. This is a true story of a woman who became the first chaplain for search and rescue missions in Maine after losing her husband, a Maine State Trooper. The story is told with humor, faith and sadness. Our town library has a copy of the book. We found it well worth the read. Thanks to Pastor Carolyn for leading the discussions which prompted much sharing.

Deacons have been busy preparing for summer and looking forward to welcoming our new pastor Rev. Donna Vuilleumier on June 2nd.

We are also delighted about the opportunity to attend the 250th Anniversary Celebration of the Center Church, our "Mother Church," The Center Church has changed its usual summer worship service hour on June 30th to 11:00 AM and invited everyone at Smith to attend the celebration that day. In order to make this possible, we will begin our 9:30 AM Sunday worship time on June 30th this summer. Our own Rev. Elizabeth Hambrick-Stowe will be leading worship at the Center and we encourage everyone at Smith to migrate up to the Center after our service that day. We will return to 10:30 AM Sunday service start time on September 8th.

RBA Tuesday, June 4 2:30-7:30 PM InCasts Wednesday, June 5 6:30-8 PM Erie Canal trip Tuesday, June 18-Saturday, June 22 RBA

RBA wants to thank the parents of Emma Matteson and Abby Carroll for making us supper in May. We enjoyed the first weekend of May on Peak's Island staying in the Brackett Church there on the island and enjoyed all our usual activities. We attended church there on Sunday morning and had prepared a skit about Jesus calming the storm on the lake which was well-received by everyone there. A bonus was finding out that the church serves lunch after worship every Sunday so we enjoyed a delicious meal with them. Our last meeting of the year is June 4 which will be our traditional time at Manahan, potluck supper, closing worship service put on by our 8th graders, and the presentation of awards. We will start back up in September and would love to have more youth in grades 6-8 join us. Please contact Tyler (491-4126; [email protected] or Jenna (910-709-6132; [email protected]) or Barbara (464-5239; [email protected]) for more information. THE SCENE

The SCENE finished their season on May 18 by cooking a spaghetti supper for ourselves, playing games, having a closing worship service, making and eating a giant ice cream sundae, and watching the movie Milo and Otis in our pajamas and sleeping bags before being picked up by parents. We will start up again in September - please get in touch with Jean Crowley (464-4013 or [email protected]) or Barbara Daley (464-5239 or [email protected]) if you have someone in grades 1-5 who might be interested in the group.
