Summer is here and it is time to gear up for all the fun camping and family times ahead. While you’re doing that and working on your 4-H projects, don’t forget to do your record books along the way so when fair comes around it is not so daunting. I hope some of you are looking forward to camps this summer. The teens are

working hard to make them the best they can be. We still need Cloverbud Camp counselors, so make sure to get your application in if you are between the ages of 12-14 (grades 6-8). I am looking forward to a fun-filled summer with camps and the teen exchange and then fair, plus some personal time for family and reunions. I hope you all have some fun planned and be sure to look in the newsletter for some of those fun-filled things you can do in 4-H.

CALLING ALL CLOVERBUD CAMPERS & COUNSELORS!

If you haven’t registered for Cloverbud Day Camp yet, July 15-17, there’s still time!

For camper registration forms, see pages 14-15. (Registration is due July 8.)

For counselor applications, see pages 16-20. (Applications are due June 7.)

We hope to see you in the garden!

June 2019 Tanana District 4-H News

Fair time will be here before you know it. 4-H needs volunteers to serve as building attendants for the Upper Totem during the Tanana Valley State Fair, Aug. 2-11. There are 2.5-hour shifts available from noon to 10 p.m. daily. If you don’t have a season pass, it is no problem because the fair will provide a day pass for the day you are helping. Your responsibilities would be to watch over the exhibits for all divisions

in the Upper Totem Building and to answer questions about 4-H, locations of exhibits, restrooms or buildings. (Fairground maps will be provided at the table to help you answer these questions). Here is an opportunity for parents, aunts, uncles, leaders, grandparents, friends and co-workers to help 4-H and receive a one-day pass into the fair for 2.5 hours of their time. Building attendants need to be 18 years or older. We are asking each 4-H club to take a day, which means finding four people (18 years and older) to building sit for 2.5 hours each during the time slot on the day they sign up for. Also, the club will provide a coordinator who will check at the beginning of each shift to make sure their volunteer shows up and then cover the shift if they did not. Individuals can contact Patsy Perkins to fill shifts, which are noon-2:30 p.m., 2:30-5 p.m., 5-7:30 p.m. and 7:30-10 p.m. Contact information: Patsy Perkins, [email protected] or 907-479-4529 or 907-712-4544 (days only).

Totem Building Attendants Needed

IT’S ALMOST FAIR TIME!

Division 1, 4-H Club Work has many divisions within this division that have a spot for exhibits that would fit any project 4-H members are doing. For any project, there is a place to exhibit an educational display about your project or photography entry where you can tell a picture story about your 4-H project as it progresses from start to finish. If you are doing a leadership or national 4-H project, Division 1G would be a place to share with the community your project. Are you an officer for your club? Division 1G has a place for you. Check out Division 1 and see all the opportunities there are. Like to perform? Then Division 1L, 4-H Presentation and Preforming Arts, would be a good fit.

Please note the Entry Days for Division 1, 4-H Club Work: Non-Perishable Entry Day — Saturday, July 27, noon-6 p.m. — Upper Totem (One day only.) Perishable Entry Day — Thursday, Aug. 1, noon-6 p.m. — Upper Totem (One day only.)

Division 1, 4-H Club Work does interview judging where 4-H members have the opportunity to explain to the judge about their project and exhibit. This is the preferred way to do the judging; however, if for some reason you will be out of town on Entry Day, other arrangements can be made so your 4-H member still has the opportunity to share his/her exhibit with the community. Please contact Patsy Perkins, Division 1, 4-H Club Work Superintendent, if there are any questions or if you need to make arrangements to drop off exhibits before Entry Day. Contact information is [email protected] or 907-712-4544 or 907-479-4529.

June 2019 Tanana District 4-H News

Time to think fair! Here is a fun project open to all 4-H members. Under 4-H Communications, Division 1I, Class E, Lot 3, there is a scavenger hunt where the 4-H member takes photos of 10 items on a list and then mounts them on a standard sheet of foam core or poster board no larger than 20 by 30 inches. Individual photos must be a minimum of 3 by 5 inches and may have titles. 4-H members need not be enrolled in a photography project to enter this lot. The 4-H Photo Scavenger Hunt subjects include the following items: cattle, something green, a 4-H project, a tomato, something that depicts hands for larger service, health for better living, your community, an Alaskan scene and something blue, green and yellow. Remember, the 4-H photo entries are entered in Division 1, 4-H Club Work, which is upstairs in the Upper Totem Building during Non-Perishable Entry Day. (Do not enter them in the Open Photo Division.) For questions, contact Patsy Perkins, Division 1, 4-H Club Work Superintendent, at [email protected] or 712-4544 (day phone).

There are many contests for 4-H members to enter. Some you need to be enrolled in the project to enter, others you do not. Here is an overview of the contests available and following are the registration forms. (Please note that the food contests and garden tour are on same page as are the sewing challenge and preforming arts.) The registration form needs to be attached to an exhibit tag and entered on Non-Perishable Entry Day, July 27, noon- 6 p.m. in the Upper Totem Building. My Favorite Foods — Monday, July 29, at noon — Upper Totem. In this contest, 4-H members who are enrolled in a foods project can bring their favorite food to be judged. Guidelines are available for this contest. Bake Off — Wednesday, Aug. 7, at noon — Borealis Demonstration Kitchen. Kids

enrolled in a foods project enter this one where they bake an item (depends on age) in front of a judge, start to finish. Grand champion receives a $20 fair premium. All lot champions receive a $10 fair premium. Guidelines available. Fashion Revue and My Favorite Outfit — Sunday, Aug. 4, at 12:30 p.m. Here are two chances to model your outfits. Fashion Revue is for those enrolled in a sewing project who have made a garment. My Favorite Outfit is for any 4-H member who has a favorite outfit they would like to model (can be self-made, store-bought, made by someone else, etc.). Performing Arts and Presentations — Sunday, Aug. 4, starting right after the Fashion Revue. This is for anyone who would like to do a public presentation, demonstration or perform (singing, dancing, reciting poetry, playing an instrument, etc.). This can be an individual or team presentation or performance. Home Garden Tour — Tuesday, July 30, starting at 4 p.m. This is where the judge comes to your garden, which can be a flower or vegetable garden. You will be notified when the judge will be at your garden. Sewing Challenge — Tuesday, July 30, at noon — UAF University Park Building, Room 154. Think you can sew? Come show a judge! Depending on age and level in a sewing project, contestants will identify machine and hand tools, and demonstrate techniques and skills by completing a selected project. Guidelines available. For questions on any of the contests, contact Patsy Perkins at [email protected], 907-712-4544 days or 907-479-4529 evenings.
