Dual worship schedule continues during month of June

In accordance with the latest guidelines offered by Governor Abbott on May 18 to reopen Texas, our church will continue to hold two worship services each Sunday at 9:00 and 10:15. We will re-evaluate the worship schedule again before July. Right now our worship schedule is on a month to month basis. The state of Texas continues to recommend that churches offer seniors (folks age 65+) a separate worship service to keep older church members out of harms way from the general population so they can be better shielded from potential infection of the coronavirus. The 9:00 am service will continue to be held pri-marily for folks in that age group. At 10:15 am we’re offering Family Worship for those under 65 years old. This worship service features more of a blend of contemporary worship songs along with old favorite hymns. The 10:15 am service will also continue to be live streamed online on Facebook Live. If you choose to worship online, please also remember to give an offering online as well. You can make online donations via our church website at www.immanuelevangelicalchurch.org/donate Whichever service you attend, there are some “Minimum Standard Health Protocols” for churches that the state of Tex-as is recommending that everyone follow. • We will not pass offering plates for the near future. There are a number of opportunities for the congregation to inter-act with Pastor Sid and his family. We are asking for everyone in the church to take time to attend one or more of these special events.

So often when we read the Bible we forget that this book which is over 2,000 years old is not just one book, but a whole library of books, in fact there are 66 of them 39 that compose the Old Testament or Hebrew Bible and 27 that make up the New Testament. In fact, the word Bible comes

from the Koine Greek word meaning “the books.” Most of the Old Testament books had been collected together by the first century A.D. as the normative collection of Jewish scripture as evidence of the Dead Sea Scrolls dating from that period found at Qumran. Only the book of Esther was missing from this collection. In Judaism, the Old Testament is called the Tanakh. The canon of the Old Testament or Tanakh was established around 90 A.D., according to some biblical scholars, by the Council of Jamnia. While the Old Testament was originally written in Hebrew and Aramaic, the version of the Old Testament writings used by the authors of the New Testament and the Early Church was printed in Koine Greek and called the Septuagint. The Greek translation was part of the library at Alexandria in Egypt. The Greek translation also allowed God’s Word to be widely circulated and read throughout the Roman Empire. The books that make up the Jewish Tanakh are the same as those that comprise the Old Testament in Protestant Christian versions of the Bible, although the books in the Tanakh are placed in a slightly different order. Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox versions of the Bible contain some additional books in their listing of Old Testament books. These books, like Wisdom of Solomon, 1 Maccabees, 2 Maccabees and Judith were contained in the Greek Septuagint version of the Old Testament and were used and regarded by some in the Early Church as being part of Scripture. Protestant Christians eventually did not include these books in their version of the Old Testament because they were not officially included in the Jewish canon of Scripture. Still, these books are regarded as important to the Christian faith and are included in a set of books called the Apocrypha and are recommended for Christian reading due to their historical nature within the origins of Christianity. When the Apostle Paul wrote 2 Timothy 3:16 saying, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,” his mention of “Scripture” probably only included the books of the Old Testament that had been collected in the Septuagint. Today, Christians interpret this passage to include all of the books in the New Testament as well. All branches of Christianity: Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Protestant do agree upon the same 27 books that comprise the canon of the New Testament. These books were written in Koine Greek. The Early Church in the first century had already begun collecting the writings of the Apostle Paul and other apostles

as evidenced in 2 Peter 3:15-16 when Peter notes, “…our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters…” In 367 A.D. Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria, was the first person to list the 27 books that would be finally be canonized as the Christian New Testament. The New Testament books were finally canonized at the Synod of Hippo Regius in North Africa in 393 A.D. One of the books that almost made the cut for the canon of the New Testament was the Didache, also called the “Teaching of the Twelve.” It was written by the Early Church during the middle of the first century A.D. as a handbook for Christian instruction and includes the first quotation of the Lord’s Prayer outside the gospels. It also offers Christian readers the Early Church’s teaching on abortion and how much water should be used during the sacrament of baptism. How did the Church decide which books should be included in the New Testament? There were three criteria: apostolic origin (it was written by one of the first apostles or their close companions), universal acceptance (the books were widely used by the Early Church all over the Roman Empire), and consistent message (its contents were similar in theology to other accepted Christian writings). As you can see, there is a lot of history that has gone into the

making of the library of books that we call the Bible. Some

of these Bible trivia fun facts might come in handy during

Confirmation Jeopardy on May 31. (You might want to

store this trivia in your brain to assist the Confirmation Class

just in case they need a life line on a tricky question!)

What’s amazing is that God was behind the authorship and

collecting of these books that we hold to as Scripture. Each

book bears the imprint of the Holy Spirit. Celebrate that fact

when you next pick up your Bible to read for morning

devotions, Bible study or communal worship. If you’ll do,

you’ll be amazed at how these ancient books still speak

God’s Word to us today with power and authority.

Friday, June 5 will be a Jr./Sr. High Event held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm with Pastor Sid leading part of the pro-gram. All teens grades 6 through 12 plus 2020 graduates are invited to attend. Parents are also invited to hang out. On Saturday, June 6, from 3:00-5:30 pm an Elementary age Kid’s event is planned. There will be water games. Kids should bring a towel and swimsuit and plan to get wet! Pastor Sid will lead part of the program. A hot dog supper will be served. Parents are also invited to hang out. On Sunday, June 7, Pastor Sid will speak and share his testimony at both the 9:00 am and 10:15 am worship ser-vices. The Fellowship Committee will host a congrega-tional dinner at 11:30 am so folks can share in a time of fellowship together. After lunch, we will hold an infor-mal Q&A with Pastor Sid in the Fellowship Hall. In addition to these events, Pastor Sid will also have sit down meetings with the Youth Pastor Search Committee, Consistory and Pastor Ron to get a deeper impression of this candidate. What are the next steps? Our weekend with Pastor Sid will be evaluated by the Youth Pastor Search Committee and the Consistory on June 9 and 11 respectively. If the Consistory votes to pursue Pastor Sid as the official candidate, a Special Con-gregational Meeting may be called for Sunday, June 28 to vote on him for the position of Youth Pastor. More info on Pastor Sid Pastor Sid or “Baba Sid” as he’s often called at school or youth events, earned a Bachelors degree in Biblical Counseling from the College of Biblical Studies in Hou-ston, TX in 2009. He was ordained into ministry in 2011

at The River Church, Channelview, TX. He is currently serving as a youth stateside missionary in God’s Army, a parachurch ministry. He and his wife, Chai, are parents to one daugh-ter and five sons. Please bathe Pastor Sid’s visit in your prayers.

On Sunday, May 17 we celebrated with 6 of our 2020 high school graduates. The teens and their families enjoyed breakfast at 9:00 am and then were hon-ored during worship at 10:15. Pictured are front row: Bradley Kostelnik, Macie Bean, Reid Hedt; back row: Kyler Teykl, Wyatt Jordan and Deven Dick.

Supplemental “Praise Hymnal” to be added to worship

The Worship & Evangelism Committee has affirmed adding the Praise Hymnal to the worship life of our church family. The Praise Hymnal, published in 2020 by Taylor Publi-cations in Montgomery, Texas, is a collection of 420+ “contemporary praise and worship songs” that are popu-lar across evangelical American Christianity. The Praise Hymnal is being introduced into the worship life of our church family, not to replace our current hymnal and the cherished hymns it contains, but to sup-plement that 1993 copyright hymnal and to add newer hymns and praise songs into our library of favorite hymns. Don’t worry, we’ll never quit singing our favor-ite hymns of years gone by that hold a special place in all of our hearts! The Praise Hymnal will add songs composed by popular contemporary hymn writers, such as Chris Tomlin, Paul Baloche, Michael W. Smith, Matt Redman, Twila Paris, Vince Gill, Hillsong and Mercy Me. These are worship songs, that many of us have heard on Christian radio, or played on CD or iTunes in the past 10, 15 or 25 years. The hymnal includes songs like “Awesome God.” “How Great Is Our God,” “Shout to the Lord,” “Amazing Grace My Chains Are Gone,” “In Christ Alone,” “This Is Amazing Grace,” “Agnus Dei,” “How Can I Keep

From Singing,” “Thy Word,” and “God of Angel Armies.” Families are invited to donate copies of the Praise Hymnal in loving memory of loved ones or to the glory of God. Hymnals cost $15.00 each and we are looking to purchase around 165 of them so every pew will have 3 Praise Hymnals in the pew racks. An order form is attached on the back page of this month’s newsletter. Please submit orders to the church office by June 21.

ed at both sanctuary entrances. • We will not pass communion elements for the

near future. Communion elements will be available at both entrances for folks to pick up as they enter worship on the Sundays that we celebrate the Lord’s Supper. We will be using pre-packaged wafers and juice cups that we used on Maundy Thursday and Easter Sunday.

• We ask folks to utilize hand sanitizer when enter-ing the sanctuary. Bottles of hand sanitizer will available at both sanctuary entrances.

• We ask that folks leave every other row left empty to allow for proper spacing between at-tendees.

• We ask that folks who are not immediate family members and who sit in the same pew to please keep two seats apart for proper spacing of at-tendees.

• If you feel comfortable wearing a face mask in worship, we encourage you to do so. This is not mandatory by any means, but encouraged by the state of Texas.

• If you are feeling under the weather, please stay home. Better to be cautious than to get other people sick.

• If you feel uncomfortable engaging in large crowds at this time, that’s OK. We’ll continue to stream worship services online just for you.

• We will attempt to sanitize the pews and entrances of the sanctuary between worship services for better hy-giene while the pandemic continues to play out.

• Greeters and ushers who distribute bulletins and com-munion elements will wear face masks and gloves for the near future.

We hope this list of protocols that the state of Texas has asked us to follow will be utilized for everyone’s safety and comfort as we worship the Lord our God during these troubling days. Once again, we are re-evaluating our worship schedule and so-cial distancing procedures on a month by month basis and ex-pect a possible change in worship schedule starting in July.

Immanuel Church raises $1,400+ in CROP Walk

Confirmation Jeopardy, Rite of Confirmation, May 31

The Coronavirus pandemic cancelled the West Fort Bend County CROP Hunger Walk that was to be held in Rosenberg. In it’s place, individual churches were encouraged to hold their own CROP Hunger Walks, either virtually or at some other location. Our church chose to hold a mini CROP Hunger Walk at the church on Saturday, May 9, the same time the Lions Club held a food drive for the Needville Food Pantry. Fourteen church members took part and raised $1,445.00 for local and global hunger relief. 25% of funds raised by the CROP Hunger Walk will return to our community and be divided be-tween the Needville Food Pantry and the local food pantry in Richmond. The remaining 75% will be used by Church World Service to fight global hunger in more than 40 countries worldwide. Participating church members also brought in a number of can food items that were donated to the Needville Food Pantry to provide immediate hun-ger relief for area families.

Thanks to everyone who took part in the CROP Hunger Walk and to everyone who donated funds for this important local and global mis-sions project.

Teens in this year’s Confirmation Class will be quizzed on Bible Trivia, Church History, Holi-days, the Heidelberg Catechism, Hymns of the Church, Immanuel Evangelical Church History and more during Confirmation Jeopardy on Sun-day, May 31 at 9:00 am. The congregation is invited to cheer on our Con-firmation Class as they take their final exam in a fun game show format. A continental breakfast of donuts, milk and juice will be served for eve-ryone who attends. Following Confirmation Jeopardy, the class will celebrate the Rite of Confirmation along with their first communion during the 10:15 am wor-ship service. The day’s festivities happen to fall on Pentecost Sunday, the Birthday of the Christian Church as recorded in Acts 2. All church members are in-vited to wear red in celebration of Pentecost. This year’s Confirmation Class includes Aubrey Chumchal, Bryler Weidemann and Kailee Zwahr. The teens will be presented leather bound edi-tions of the NIV Student Bible along with a cou-ple of personal gifts from Pastor Ron and Deanna

to celebrate their commitment to follow Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior as members of our church family. Steve Britt will be preaching and leading the 9:00 am worship service on May 31 to allow Pastor Ron the chance to emcee the Confirmation Jeopardy Game at 9:00 am.

PRAYER LIST P.U.S.H. = Pray Until Something Happens!

NEW & UPDATED PRAYER LIST GUIDELINES

It is an honor and privilege to pray for the needs of those on our prayer list. However, in response to concerns expressed about the length and timeliness of our congregation's prayer list, the following guidelines were developed by the Consistory. Prayer requests can be made by calling or coming by the church office during regular business hours (9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Mondays through Fridays). Prayer requests can also be submitted on Sunday mornings on a completed prayer list request form to be announced during the weekly worship service. To respect each person's privacy, if you are adding someone other than yourself to the prayer list, please receive their permission in advance. Not everyone wants their name announced, and we must respect the personal wishes of each individual. Prayer requests will be listed for a maximum of six weeks. If prayer is still needed and wanted, the name may be resubmitted to the church office for another six weeks. Thank you for your assistance in this matter. We look forward to sharing in both your concerns and your joys!

The Christian Education Committee is taking a proac-tive approach to raise funds for this years Youth pro-gram. Last year the decision was made that our youth ministry participants should not have to pay for com-ing to Youth Group. Therefore, in order to maintain the level and quality of the ministry, funds do need to be raised for the curriculum, supplies and snacks/dinner. Last year, the snacks and meals were kept to under $100 per week to feed approximately 40 kids an after school snack, and approximately 15-20 youth/adults the dinner meal. The Christian Education Committee will be selling Hot Dogs, Baked Beans, Chips and a drink. In addi-tion, the Mission Trip participants were scheduled to sell homemade ice cream at the parade in April; how-ever, it was canceled. Therefore, the ice cream will be sold in conjunction with the Youth Ministry fundrais-er. The total meal cost, including meal, drink and home made ice cream will be $10.00 and will be split between the youth account and the mission trip. The luncheon will be held Sunday, June 14th follow-ing the 10:15 am worship service. Please come out and support our youth program and mission trip.

Memorial Day observance held at church cemetery Around 45 people attended the Me-morial Day observance out at Im-manuel Church’s Cemetery. Our Cub Scout Pack 129, under the direction of church member scout leaders Bill March and Jeff Chap-man, presented the colors and led attendees in the Pledge of Alle-giance. The congregation sang a couple of patriotic hymns and Pastor Ron shared scripture from Psalm 27 along with a short reflection. Bobby Zwahr read the list of veter-ans who are buried out at the ceme-tery. Taps was played with a mo-ment of silent reflection. Folks enjoyed this time to recog-nize the faith, military service and courage of church members who have gone home to be with the Lord.
