June should bring good growing weather for warm season turf allowing us to do the necessary cultural practices to sustain a healthy plant. June 1st and 2nd, we will be performing our first major aeration to the greens.

The greens will first be aerated with the deep tine machine that will create a channel 8 inches deep into the greens’ profile that the turf’s roots will follow. Next we will aerate using a coring tine on a very close spac-ing. The cores that are pulled from the green will be broken up using a drag mat to separate the sand from the unwanted organic material. The sand will be left behind to refill the holes created and the organic material will be hauled away. Performing this major aeration is vital for the health of the greens by creating the pore space needed to allow oxygen into the soil to grow a strong root system.

Topdressing Greens and tees will become more frequent now that the turf is growing. Topdressing with sand has many benefits for turf grown on a golf course. It is a major defense in preventing thatch build up, helps improve drainage and will create a playing surface that is smoother and firmer. Thatch is a layer of living and dead plant material that is just above the soil produced in the natural life cycle of turf that can be detri-mental to the turf’s health if allowed to become excessive. Topdressing with sand will help give what would otherwise become a dense organic layer a porous structure that will help the movement of air and water down into the soil.

The month of June is traditionally a great time of year for golf at East Ridge and this June is no exception. Greens aerifi-cation will take place on Monday, June 1st and Tuesday, June 2nd with the golf course reopening on Wednesday, June 3rd. The practice facilities will be open on Tuesday, June 2nd under normal operating hours. The month of June brings a few new changes to our operation as we move into Phase I of the COVID-19 era. Effective Friday, May 15th :

• Carts will remain available for single rider usage • Scorecards, tees, pencils, ball markers, and towels will be available at the starter’s box outside the Golf Shop door • The Golf Shop will open for check-in and shopping limited to a maximum of 6 people • Between the hours of 11:30 am and 2:30 pm tee times will only be given to groups of 3 or more players • Tee times will begin at 8:00am on weekdays and 7:00am on weekends. Please call 48 hours in advance to schedule tee times • Carts must be returned by 8:00 pm each night • The practice facilities will close at 7:30 pm • Guest Play allowed and monitored according to Club By-Laws. In-town guests no more than once a month • Bag Storage will resume on Friday, May 15th • Walking and jogging are not permitted between the hours of 8:00 am and 8:30 pm • Fishing and bringing pets on club property are not allowed at any time • 2020 Calendar of Events is postponed until further notice

For the safety of our membership and staff, we ask everyone to do their part to minimize the risks to each other, including social distancing and frequent hand washing. By working together, we can provide a safe club environment and work-place, and ensure a successful re-opening of the club. Members, East Ridge Country Club and Pierremont Oaks Tennis Club both continue to thrive during the Covid-19 pan-demic. Again, I say thank you to the membership for your continued support, which is the key to the success we are having. It seems the rules/laws we have to follow, change on a weekly basis if not quicker. We are trying to follow them as closely as we can while allowing our membership to enjoy their club as much as possible. The golf course has had a tremendous amount of play during this time. Now that we are allowed to play tennis at both facilities, we are having a lot of play on the courts as well. The swimming pools are opening Memorial day weekend and we are expecting large crowds. The pool area at both pools will be limited to 50 members at a time due to social distancing. A time limit of 1 ½ hours per visit will also be enforced to allow all members the opportunity to enjoy the pool. Hopefully we will be able to open without restrictions in the next few weeks. As for our restaurants, we continue to be limited because of social distancing. Please call for reservations to as-sure you a table. The salad bar is back open during lunch at East Ridge. We will have a staff member behind the bar serving the guests. This allows only one person touching spoons, ladles and tongs. Our staff member will be wear-ing a mask and gloves at all times. Also our kitchen and waitstaff are taking precautions and practicing good hy-giene at all times to protect themselves and our members. If you feel comfortable, please come out and see us and use your club. If you do not feel comfortable to get out at this time, we understand and respect your decision. Thank you again for the support everyone has shown and we look forward to getting back to a more regular rou-tine soon. The staff has asked that I pass on a huge thank you for your kindness with the voluntary contribution you made in April to financially assist them during this time. We look forward to seeing you soon.

It sure is good to be back to work. I hope everyone is doing well. Due to court availability, we will continue to reserve courts to better serve you. We have a Men’s League Thursday night at 6:00 pm.
